1 A nche voi, mogli, siate sottomesse ai vostri mariti perché, se anche ve ne sono che non ubbidiscono alla parola, siano guadagnati, senza parola, dalla condotta delle loro mogli,

¶ Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that also those who do not obey the Word, may be won without a word by the conversation of their wives,

2 q uando avranno considerato la vostra condotta casta e rispettosa.

considering your chaste conversation which is in fear.

3 I l vostro ornamento non sia quello esteriore, che consiste nell’intrecciarsi i capelli, nel mettersi addosso gioielli d’oro e nell’indossare belle vesti,

Let their adorning not be outward with ostentatious hairdos and wearing of gold nor in composition of apparel,

4 m a quello che è intimo e nascosto nel cuore, la purezza incorruttibile di uno spirito dolce e pacifico, che agli occhi di Dio è di gran valore.

but let the interior adorning of the heart be without corruption, and of an agreeable spirit and peaceful, which is precious in the sight of God.

5 C osì infatti si ornavano una volta le sante donne che speravano in Dio, restando sottomesse ai loro mariti,

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who waited upon God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands,

6 c ome Sara che obbediva ad Abraamo, chiamandolo signore; della quale voi siete diventate figlie facendo il bene senza lasciarvi turbare da nessuna paura.

as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, of whom ye are made daughters, doing well and not being afraid of any terror.

7 A nche voi, mariti, vivete insieme alle vostre mogli con il riguardo dovuto alla donna, come a un vaso più delicato. Onoratele, poiché anch’esse sono eredi con voi della grazia della vita, affinché le vostre preghiere non siano impedite.

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them wisely, giving honour unto the woman, as unto a more fragile vessel and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers not be hindered.

8 I nfine, siate tutti concordi, compassionevoli, pieni di amore fraterno, misericordiosi e umili;

¶ And finally, be ye all of one consent, of one affection, loving each other fraternally, merciful, courteous,

9 n on rendete male per male, od oltraggio per oltraggio, ma, al contrario, benedite; poiché a questo siete stati chiamati affinché ereditiate la benedizione.

not rendering evil for evil or curse for curse, but to the contrary, blessing, knowing that ye are called, that ye should possess a blessing by inheritance.

10 I nfatti: «Chi vuole amare la vita e vedere giorni felici, trattenga la sua lingua dal male e le sue labbra dal dire il falso;

For he that desires to love life and see the good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil and his lips that they speak no guile;

11 f ugga il male e faccia il bene; cerchi la pace e la persegua;

let him separate himself from evil and do good; let him seek peace and follow it.

12 p erché gli occhi del Signore sono sui giusti e i suoi orecchi sono attenti alle loro preghiere, ma la faccia del Signore è contro quelli che fanno il male».

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those that do evil.

13 C hi vi farà del male, se siete zelanti nel bene?

And who is he that can harm you, if ye are followers of that which is good?

14 S e poi doveste soffrire per la giustizia, beati voi! Non vi sgomenti la paura che incutono e non vi agitate;

But also if ye suffer anything for righteousness’ sake, blessed are ye; therefore, be not afraid of their terror neither be troubled,

15 m a glorificate il Cristo come Signore nei vostri cuori. Siate sempre pronti a rendere conto della speranza che è in voi a tutti quelli che vi chiedono spiegazioni.

but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to respond to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and reverence,

16 M a fatelo con mansuetudine e rispetto, e avendo una buona coscienza; affinché quando sparlano di voi, rimangano svergognati quelli che calunniano la vostra buona condotta in Cristo.

¶ having a good conscience, so in that which they murmur against you as of evildoers, those that blaspheme your good conversation in the Christ may be confused.

17 I nfatti è meglio che soffriate per aver fatto il bene, se tale è la volontà di Dio, che per aver fatto il male. L’esempio di Cristo nelle sue afflizioni

For it is better (if the will of God so desires) that ye suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

18 A nche Cristo ha sofferto una volta per i peccati, lui giusto per gli ingiusti, per condurvi a Dio. Fu messo a morte quanto alla carne, ma reso vivente quanto allo spirito.

¶ For the Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in spirit,

19 E in esso andò anche a predicare agli spiriti trattenuti in carcere,

in which he also went and preached unto the imprisoned spirits,

20 c he una volta furono ribelli, quando la pazienza di Dio aspettava, al tempo di Noè, mentre si preparava l’arca, nella quale poche anime, cioè otto, furono salvate attraverso l’acqua.

which in the time past were disobedient, when once the patience of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being made ready, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

21 Q uest’acqua era figura del battesimo (che non è eliminazione di sporcizia dal corpo, ma la richiesta di una buona coscienza verso Dio). Esso ora salva anche voi, mediante la risurrezione di Gesù Cristo,

¶ Unto the figure of which the baptism that does now correspond saves us (not taking away the uncleanness of the flesh, but giving testimony of a good conscience before God) by the resurrection of Jesus, the Christ,

22 c he, asceso al cielo, sta alla destra di Dio, dove angeli, principati e potenze gli sono sottoposti.

who is at the right hand of God, having ascended into heaven, unto whom the angels and the authorities and powers are subject.
