1 D opo questi fatti, i figli di Moab e i figli di Ammon, e con loro dei Maoniti, marciarono contro Giosafat per fargli guerra.

¶ It came to pass after this also that the sons of Moab and the sons of Ammon and with them others besides the Ammonites came against Jehoshaphat to battle.

2 V ennero dei messaggeri a informare Giosafat, dicendo: «Una gran moltitudine avanza contro di te dall’altra parte del mare, dalla Siria, ed è giunta ad Asason-Tamar, cioè En-Ghedi».

Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, There comes a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea, and from Syria; and, behold, they are in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi.

3 G iosafat ebbe paura, si dispose a cercare il Signore e bandì un digiuno per tutto Giuda.

Then Jehoshaphat feared and set himself to seek the LORD and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

4 G iuda si radunò per implorare aiuto dal Signore, e da tutte quante le città di Giuda venivano gli abitanti a cercare il Signore.

And Judah gathered themselves together, to consult the LORD; and out of all the cities of Judah they came to consult the LORD.

5 G iosafat, stando in piedi in mezzo all’assemblea di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, nella casa del Signore, davanti al cortile nuovo,

And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court,

6 d isse: « Signore, Dio dei nostri padri, non sei tu Dio dei cieli? Non sei tu che domini su tutti i regni delle nazioni? Non hai tu nelle tue mani la forza e la potenza, in modo che nessuno può resistere contro di te?

and said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in the heavens and dost thou not rule in all the kingdoms of the Gentiles? Is there not power and might in thy hand so that no one is able to withstand thee?

7 N on sei stato tu, Dio nostro, a scacciare gli abitanti di questo paese davanti al tuo popolo Israele, e a darlo per sempre alla discendenza di Abraamo, tuo amico?

Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel and didst give it to the seed of Abraham, thy friend, for ever?

8 E quelli lo hanno abitato e vi hanno costruito un santuario per il tuo nome, dicendo:

And they have dwelt in it and have built thee a sanctuary in it for thy name, saying,

9 “ Quando ci cadrà addosso qualche calamità, spada, giudizio, peste o carestia, noi ci presenteremo davanti a questa casa e davanti a te, poiché il tuo nome è in questa casa; a te grideremo nella nostra tribolazione, e tu ci udrai e ci salverai”.

If evil comes upon us or the sword of judgment or pestilence or famine, we shall stand before this house and in thy presence (for thy name is in this house) and cry unto thee out of our tribulations, and thou wilt hear us and save us.

10 O ra ecco che i figli di Ammon e di Moab e quelli del monte Seir, nelle cui terre non permettesti a Israele di entrare quando veniva dal paese d’Egitto – perciò egli si tenne lontano da loro e non li distrusse –

And now, behold, the sons of Ammon and of Moab and those of Mount Seir, whose land thou would not let Israel enter when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them;

11 e ccoli che ora ci ricompensano, venendo a scacciarci dall’eredità di cui ci hai dato il possesso.

behold they reward us by coming to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.

12 D io nostro, non vorrai giudicarli? Poiché noi siamo senza forza di fronte a questa gran moltitudine che avanza contro di noi; noi non sappiamo che fare, ma gli occhi nostri sono su di te!»

O our God, wilt thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us; we do not know what to do; but our eyes are fixed upon thee.

13 T utto Giuda, perfino i loro bambini, le loro mogli e i loro figli stavano in piedi davanti al Signore.

And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

14 A llora lo Spirito del Signore investì in mezzo all’assemblea Iaaziel, figlio di Zaccaria, figlio di Benaia, figlio di Ieiel, figlio di Mattania, il Levita, tra i figli di Asaf.

¶ Then upon Jahaziel, the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;

15 I aaziel disse: «Porgete orecchio, voi tutti di Giuda, e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu, o re Giosafat! Così vi dice il Signore: “Non temete e non vi sgomentate a causa di questa gran moltitudine, poiché questa non è battaglia vostra, ma di Dio.

and he said, Hearken, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou King Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Do not be afraid nor dismayed before this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

16 D omani scendete contro di loro; eccoli che vengono su per la salita di Sis, e voi li troverete all’estremità della valle, di fronte al deserto di Ieruel.

Tomorrow ye shall go down against them; behold, they shall come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them next to the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.

17 Q uesta battaglia non sarete voi a combatterla: presentatevi, tenetevi fermi e vedrete la liberazione che il Signore vi darà. O Giuda, o Gerusalemme, non temete e non vi sgomentate; domani uscite contro di loro, e il Signore sarà con voi”».

Ye shall not need to fight in this battle; set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you. O Judah and Jerusalem; fear not, neither be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the LORD shall be with you.

18 A llora Giosafat chinò la faccia a terra, e tutto Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si prostrarono davanti al Signore e l’adorarono.

Then Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and likewise all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD.

19 I Leviti tra i figli dei Cheatiti e tra i figli dei Corachiti si alzarono per lodare a gran voce il Signore, Dio d’Israele.

And the Levites, of the sons of the Kohath and of the sons of the Korah, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.

20 L a mattina seguente si alzarono presto e si misero in marcia verso il deserto di Tecoa; mentre si mettevano in cammino, Giosafat, stando in piedi, disse: «Ascoltatemi, o Giuda, e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme! Credete nel Signore, vostro Dio, e sarete al sicuro; credete ai suoi profeti e trionferete!»

¶ And when they arose early in the morning and while they were going forth into the wilderness of Tekoa, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe the LORD your God, and ye shall be secure; believe his prophets, and ye shall be prospered.

21 E dopo aver tenuto consiglio con il popolo, stabilì dei cantori che, vestiti dei paramenti sacri, cantassero le lodi del Signore e, camminando alla testa dell’esercito, dicessero: «Celebrate il Signore, perché la sua bontà dura in eterno!»

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed some to sing unto the LORD and to praise in the beauty of holiness, while the army went out and to say, Praise the LORD, for his mercy endures for ever.

22 A ppena cominciarono i canti di gioia e di lode, il Signore tese un’imboscata contro i figli di Ammon e di Moab e contro quelli del monte Seir che erano venuti contro Giuda; e rimasero sconfitti.

And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set the sons of Moab and those of Mount Seir to ambush the sons of Ammon, who were coming against Judah; and they smote one another.

23 I figli di Ammon e di Moab assalirono gli abitanti del monte Seir per votarli allo sterminio e distruggerli; e quand’ebbero annientato gli abitanti di Seir, si diedero a distruggersi a vicenda.

And the sons of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them; and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, each one helped his companion to kill himself.

24 Q uando gli uomini di Giuda furono giunti sull’altura da cui si scorge il deserto, volsero lo sguardo verso la moltitudine, ed ecco i cadaveri che giacevano a terra; nessuno era scampato.

And when Judah came to the watch tower of the wilderness, they looked for the multitude, and, behold, they were fallen to the earth dead, for none had escaped.

25 A llora Giosafat e la sua gente andarono a far bottino delle loro spoglie; e fra i cadaveri trovarono abbondanza di ricchezze, di vesti e di oggetti preziosi; ne presero più di quanto ne potessero portare; impiegarono tre giorni a portare via il bottino, tanto era abbondante.

And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to spoil them, they found among them an abundance of riches and of dead bodies and clothing and precious vessels which they took for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days gathering in the spoil, it was so much.

26 I l quarto giorno si radunarono nella Valle di Benedizione, dove benedissero il Signore; per questo, quel luogo è stato chiamato Valle di Benedizione fino a oggi.

And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD; therefore, they called the name of that place, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.

27 T utti gli uomini di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, con a capo Giosafat, partirono con gioia per tornare a Gerusalemme, perché il Signore li aveva colmati di gioia liberandoli dai loro nemici.

Then they returned, those of Judah and those of Jerusalem with Jehoshaphat at their head, to go again to Jerusalem with joy, for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.

28 E d entrarono a Gerusalemme e nella casa del Signore al suono dei saltèri, delle cetre e delle trombe.

And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD.

29 I l terrore di Dio s’impadronì di tutti i regni degli altri paesi, quando udirono che il Signore aveva combattuto contro i nemici d’Israele.

And the fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the land when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.

30 I l regno di Giosafat ebbe pace; il suo Dio gli diede pace lungo tutti i confini. Regno di Giosafat

So the kingdom of Jehoshaphat had rest, for his God gave him rest round about.

31 C osì Giosafat regnò sopra Giuda. Aveva trentacinque anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò venticinque anni a Gerusalemme; il nome di sua madre era Azuba, figlia di Sili.

¶ Thus Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah; he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi.

32 E gli imitò in ogni cosa la condotta di Asa suo padre e non se ne allontanò, facendo quel che è giusto agli occhi del Signore.

And he walked in the way of Asa, his father, and did not depart from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.

33 T uttavia gli alti luoghi non scomparvero, perché il popolo non aveva ancora il cuore fermamente unito al Dio dei suoi padri.

With all this the high places were not taken away, for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.

34 L e altre azioni di Giosafat, le prime e le ultime, si trovano scritte nella storia di Ieu, figlio di Canani, inserita nel libro dei re d’Israele.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu, the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.

35 D opo questo, Giosafat, re di Giuda, si associò con il re d’Israele Acazia, che si comportava da empio;

After these things, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, joined himself with Ahaziah, king of Israel, who was given over to wickedness;

36 e se lo associò per costruire delle navi che andassero a Tarsis; e le costruirono a Esion-Gheber.

he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish, and they made the ships in Eziongeber.

37 A llora Eliezer, figlio di Dodava da Maresa, profetizzò contro Giosafat, dicendo: «Poiché ti sei associato con Acazia, il Signore ha disperso le tue opere». E le navi furono sfasciate e non poterono fare il viaggio verso Tarsis.

Then Eliezer, the son of Dodavah of Mareshah, prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD shall destroy thy works. And the ships were broken, and they were not able to go to Tarshish.
