1 G uai a quelli che fanno decreti iniqui e a quelli che mettono per iscritto sentenze ingiuste,

¶ Woe unto those that establish unrighteous laws and that wilfully prescribe tyranny

2 p er negare giustizia ai deboli, per spogliare del loro diritto i poveri del mio popolo, per far delle vedove la loro preda e degli orfani il loro bottino!

to turn aside the poor from right judgment and to take away the right from the afflicted of my people that widows may be their prey and that they may rob the fatherless!

3 C he farete il giorno che Dio vi visiterà, il giorno che la rovina giungerà da lontano? Presso chi fuggirete in cerca di soccorso? Dove lascerete la vostra gloria?

And what will ye do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help and where will ye leave your glory?

4 N on rimarrà loro che curvarsi tra i prigionieri o cadere fra gli uccisi. Con tutto ciò, la sua ira non si calma e la sua mano rimane distesa. L’Assiria umiliata

They shall bow down among the prisoners, and they shall fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

5 « Guai all’Assiria, verga della mia ira! Ha in mano il bastone della mia punizione.

¶ O Assyrian, rod and staff of my anger, in thy hand have I placed my indignation.

6 I o la mando contro una nazione empia e la dirigo contro il popolo che ha provocato la mia ira, con l’ordine di darsi al saccheggio, di far bottino, di calpestarlo come il fango delle strade.

I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and upon the people of my wrath will I send him to take spoil and to take prey and to ready them that they might be tread down like the mire of the streets.

7 M a essa non la intende così, non così la pensa in cuor suo; essa ha in cuore di distruggere, di sterminare nazioni in gran numero.

Howbeit he shall not think like this; not even in his heart shall he imagine this way of doing things, but his thought shall be to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

8 I nfatti dice: “I miei prìncipi non sono forse tanti re?

For he shall say, Are not my princes altogether kings?

9 F orse Calno non è come Carchemis? O Camat come Arpad? O Samaria come Damasco?

Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

10 C ome la mia mano è giunta a colpire i regni degli idoli dove le immagini erano più numerose che a Gerusalemme e a Samaria,

As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel those of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

11 n on posso io forse, come ho fatto a Samaria e ai suoi idoli, fare anche a Gerusalemme e alle sue statue?”».

shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

12 M a quando il Signore avrà compiuto tutta la sua opera sul monte Sion e a Gerusalemme, «io», dice il Signore, «punirò il re d’Assiria per il frutto della superbia del suo cuore e dell’arroganza dei suoi sguardi alteri.

Therefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole work upon Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will come upon the fruit of the pride of the heart of the king of Assyria, and upon the glory of his high looks.

13 I nfatti egli dice: “Io l’ho fatto grazie alla forza della mia mano e alla mia saggezza, perché sono intelligente; ho rimosso i confini dei popoli, ho saccheggiato i loro tesori e, potente come sono, ho detronizzato dei re.

For he said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have been prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have cast down as valiant ones those who were seated:

14 L a mia mano ha trovato, come un nido, le ricchezze dei popoli; e come uno raccoglie delle uova abbandonate, così io ho raccolto tutta la terra, e nessuno ha mosso l’ala o aperto il becco o mandato un grido”».

And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the peoples: and as one gathers eggs that are left, I have taken control over all the earth; and there was no one that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

15 L a scure si vanta forse contro colui che la maneggia? La sega si inorgoglisce forse contro colui che la muove? Come se la verga facesse muovere colui che l’alza, come se il bastone alzasse colui che non è di legno!

Shall the axe boast itself against him that hews with it? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that moves it? as if the rod should rise up against those that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift itself up. Is it not wood?

16 P erciò il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, manderà la consunzione tra i suoi più robusti; e sotto la sua gloria accenderà un fuoco, come il fuoco di un incendio.

Therefore shall the Lord, the LORD of the hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

17 L a luce d’Israele diventerà un fuoco, e il suo Santo una fiamma, che arderà e divorerà i suoi rovi e i suoi pruni in un solo giorno.

And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

18 L a gloria della sua foresta e della sua fertile campagna egli la consumerà, anima e corpo; sarà come il deperimento di un uomo che langue.

and shall consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, from the soul unto the flesh; and they shall come to be as a standard-bearer in defeat.

19 I l resto degli alberi della sua foresta sarà così minimo che un bambino potrebbe farne il conto.

And the trees that shall remain in his forest shall be in number such that a child may count them.

20 I n quel giorno il residuo d’Israele e gli scampati della casa di Giacobbe smetteranno di appoggiarsi su colui che li colpiva, e si appoggeranno con sincerità sul Signore, sul Santo d’Israele.

¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that those who shall be left of Israel and those who shall be left of the house of Jacob shall no more again stay upon him that smote them, but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 U n residuo, il residuo di Giacobbe, tornerà al Dio potente.

The remnant shall become converted, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

22 I nfatti anche se il tuo popolo, o Israele, fosse come la sabbia del mare, un residuo soltanto ne tornerà; uno sterminio è decretato, che farà traboccare la giustizia.

For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet the remnant of them shall become converted; when the consumption comes to an end, righteousness shall overflow.

23 P oiché lo sterminio che ha decretato, il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, lo effettuerà in mezzo a tutto il paese.

For the Lord GOD of the hosts shall make a consumption and an end in the midst of all the land.

24 C osì dunque dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti: «Popolo mio, che abiti a Sion, non temere l’Assiro che ti batte con la verga e alza su di te il bastone, come fece l’Egitto!

¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of the hosts, O my people, dweller of Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod and shall lift up his stick against thee by the way of Egypt;

25 A ncora un breve, brevissimo tempo, e la mia indignazione sarà finita, la mia ira si volgerà a distruggere loro».

yet from now until a very little while the indignation and my anger shall cease, to make an end of them.

26 I l Signore degli eserciti alzerà contro di lui la frusta, come quando colpì Madian alla roccia di Oreb; come alzò il suo bastone sul mare, così l’alzerà ancora, come in Egitto.

And the LORD of the hosts shall raise up a scourge against him as the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb and shall raise up his rod upon the sea, by the way of Egypt.

27 I n quel giorno il suo carico ti cadrà dalle spalle e il suo giogo dal collo; il giogo sarà scosso dalla tua forza rigogliosa.

And it shall come to pass in that day that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be consumed in the presence of the anointing.

28 L ’Assiro marcia contro Aiat, attraversa Migron, depone i suoi bagagli a Micmas.

He is come to Aiath; he is passed unto Migron; in Michmash he shall number his army:

29 V alicano il passo, trascorrono la notte a Gheba; Rama trema, Ghibea di Saul è in fuga.

They are gone over the fords; they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

30 G rida forte a tutta voce, o figlia di Gallim! Tendi l’orecchio, o Lais! Povera Anatot!

Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim; Laish cause poor Anathoth to hear thee.

31 M admenà è in fuga precipitosa, gli abitanti di Ghebim cercano un rifugio.

Madmenah is in upheaval; the inhabitants of Gebim shall gather themselves together.

32 O ggi stesso sosterà a Nob, agitando il pugno contro il monte della figlia di Sion, contro la collina di Gerusalemme.

Even yet shall come a day when he shall rest at Nob; he shall raise his hand unto the mountain of the daughter of Zion unto the hill of Jerusalem.

33 E cco, il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, tronca i rami in modo tremendo; i più alti sono tagliati, i più superbi sono atterrati.

Behold, the Lord, the LORD of the hosts, shall lop the bough with force, and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.

34 E gli abbatte con il ferro il folto della foresta, e il Libano cade sotto i colpi del Potente.

And he shall cut down the thickness of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by force.
