1 C ome mai il Signore, nella sua ira, ha coperto di una nube oscura la figlia di Sion? Egli ha gettato dal cielo in terra la gloria d’Israele e non si è ricordato dello sgabello dei suoi piedi, nel giorno della sua ira!

2 I l Signore ha distrutto senza pietà tutti i territori di Giacobbe; nella sua ira ha rovesciato, ha atterrato le fortezze della figlia di Giuda, ne ha profanato il regno e i capi.

8 I l Signore ha deciso di distruggere le mura della figlia di Sion. Ha steso la corda, non ha ritirato la mano prima di averli distrutti; ha coperto di lutto bastioni e mura: gli uni e le altre sono distrutti.

10 G li anziani della figlia di Sion stanno per terra in silenzio; si sono gettati della polvere sul capo, si sono vestiti di sacchi. Le vergini di Gerusalemme curvano il capo al suolo.

13 C he ti dirò? A che ti paragonerò, o figlia di Gerusalemme? Chi troverò simile a te per consolarti, vergine figlia di Gerusalemme? Infatti la tua ferita è larga quanto il mare; chi potrà guarirti?

Mem What witness shall I take to thee? Or unto whom shall I liken thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? Unto whom shall I compare thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is as great as the sea: who shall heal thee?

14 I tuoi profeti hanno avuto per te visioni vane e illusorie; non hanno messo a nudo la tua iniquità per distogliere da te la deportazione. Le profezie che hanno fatto a tuo riguardo non erano che oracoli vani e seduttori.

Nun Thy prophets have preached vanity and foolishness unto thee; and they have not uncovered thine iniquity to turn away thy captivity but have preached unto thee vain prophecies and digressions.

15 T utti i passanti battono le mani al vederti; fischiano e scuotono il capo quando vedono la figlia di Gerusalemme: «È questa la città che la gente chiamava una bellezza perfetta, la gioia di tutta la terra?»

Samech All that passed by clapped their hands over thee and whistled and wagged their heads over the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

16 T utti i tuoi nemici aprono larga la bocca contro di te, fischiano e digrignano i denti; dicono: «L’abbiamo inghiottita! Sì, questo è il giorno che aspettavamo; ci siamo giunti, lo vediamo!»

Pe All thine enemies opened their mouths regarding thee; they whistled and gnashed their teeth; they said, Swallow her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found it, we have seen it.

17 I l Signore ha fatto quanto si era proposto. Ha adempiuto la parola che aveva pronunciata fin dai giorni antichi: ha distrutto senza pietà, ha fatto di te la gioia del nemico; ha esaltato la potenza dei tuoi avversari.

Ain The LORD has done that which he had determined; he has fulfilled his word that he had commanded from the time of old; he has destroyed and has not forgiven; and he has caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee; he has raised up the horn of thine adversaries.

18 I l loro cuore grida al Signore: «O mura della figlia di Sion, spandete lacrime come un torrente, giorno e notte! Non vi date pace, non abbiano riposo le pupille degli occhi vostri!

Tsade Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion; let tears run down like a river day and night; give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.

19 A lzatevi, gridate di notte, al principio di ogni veglia! Spandete come acqua il vostro cuore davanti alla faccia del Signore! Alzate le mani verso di lui per la vita dei vostri bambini, che vengono meno per la fame agli angoli di tutte le strade!

Koph Arise, cry out in the night; in the beginning of the watches; pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord; lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children that faint for hunger in the top of every street.

20 G uarda, Signore, considera! Chi mai hai trattato così? Delle donne hanno divorato il frutto del loro grembo, i bambini che accarezzavano! Sacerdoti e profeti sono stati massacrati nel santuario del Signore!

Resh Look, O LORD, and consider unto whom thou hast shaken thus. Shall the women eat their fruit, the little ones that they are bringing up? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 B ambini e vecchi giacciono a terra nelle vie; le mie vergini e i miei giovani sono caduti per la spada. Tu li hai uccisi nel giorno della tua ira, li hai massacrati senza pietà.

Schin The young and the old lay on the ground in the streets; my virgins and my young men fell by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed and hast not forgiven.

22 T u hai convocato, come a un giorno di festa solenne, i miei terrori da tutte le parti; nel giorno dell’ira del Signore non c’è stato superstite né fuggiasco. Quelli che io avevo accarezzati e allevati, il mio nemico li ha consumati!»

Tau Thou hast called as to a day of solemnity my terrors from everywhere, so that in the day of the LORD’s anger no one escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up my enemy has consumed.
