1 I l Signore mi fece vedere due canestri di fichi, posti davanti al tempio del Signore, dopo che Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, ebbe deportato da Gerusalemme a Babilonia Ieconia, figlio di Ioiachim, re di Giuda, i capi di Giuda, i falegnami e i fabbri.

¶ The LORD showed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of the LORD, after Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the princes of Judah with the carpenters and smiths from Jerusalem, and had taken them to Babylon.

2 U no dei canestri conteneva dei fichi molto buoni, come sono i fichi primaticci, e l’altro canestro conteneva dei fichi molto cattivi, che non si potevano mangiare, tanto erano cattivi.

One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very evil figs, which could not be eaten, they were so evil.

3 I l Signore mi disse: «Che vedi, Geremia?» Io risposi: «Dei fichi; quelli buoni, molto buoni, e quelli cattivi, molto cattivi, da non potersi mangiare, tanto sono cattivi».

Then the LORD said unto me, What dost thou see, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, so evil that they cannot be eaten.

4 L a parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

5 « Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Quali sono questi fichi buoni, tali saranno quelli di Giuda che ho mandati da questo luogo in esilio nel paese dei Caldei. Io li tratterò con riguardo,

Thus hath the LORD God of Israel said: Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge those that are carried away captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good.

6 m etterò il mio occhio su di loro per il bene, li ricondurrò in questo paese, li stabilirò fermamente e non li distruggerò; li pianterò e non li sradicherò.

For I will set my eyes upon them for good, and I will return them to this land, and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up.

7 D arò loro un cuore per conoscere me, che sono il Signore; saranno mio popolo e io sarò loro Dio, perché si convertiranno a me con tutto il loro cuore.

And I will give them a heart that they might know me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.

8 C ome invece si trattano i fichi cattivi, che non si possono mangiare, tanto sono cattivi, così”, dice il Signore, “io tratterò Sedechia, re di Giuda, e i suoi prìncipi e il residuo di quelli di Gerusalemme, quelli che sono rimasti in questo paese e quelli che abitano nel paese d’Egitto.

And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil, surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give Zedekiah the king of Judah and his princes and the residue of Jerusalem that remained in this land and that dwell in the land of Egypt:

9 F arò in modo che siano agitati e maltrattati per tutti i regni della terra; diventeranno oggetto d’obbrobrio, di proverbio, di sarcasmo e di maledizione in tutti i luoghi dove li caccerò.

And I give them to be removed, for evil unto all the kingdoms of the earth, for infamy, and for reproach and for a proverb, and for a curse unto all the places where I shall drive them.

10 M anderò contro di loro la spada, la fame, la peste, finché siano scomparsi dal suolo che avevo dato a loro e ai loro padri”».

And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence upon them until they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.
