1 R icercate l’amore e desiderate ardentemente i doni spirituali, principalmente il dono di profezia.

¶ Follow after charity and earnestly pursue spiritual gifts, but above all, that ye may prophesy.

2 P erché chi parla in altra lingua non parla agli uomini, ma a Dio; poiché nessuno lo capisce, ma in spirito dice cose misteriose.

For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God, for no one understands him, even though by the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

3 C hi profetizza, invece, parla agli uomini un linguaggio di edificazione, di esortazione e di consolazione.

But he that prophesies speaks unto men for edification and exhortation and comfort.

4 C hi parla in altra lingua edifica se stesso; ma chi profetizza edifica la chiesa.

He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself, but he that prophesies edifies the congregation.

5 V orrei che tutti parlaste in altre lingue, ma molto più che profetizzaste; chi profetizza è superiore a chi parla in altre lingue, a meno che egli interpreti perché la chiesa ne riceva edificazione.

I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied, for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, that the congregation may receive edifying.

6 D unque, fratelli, se io venissi a voi parlando in altre lingue, che vi servirebbe se la mia parola non vi recasse qualche rivelazione, o qualche conoscenza, o qualche profezia, o qualche insegnamento?

¶ Now, brothers, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either with revelation or with knowledge or with prophecy or with doctrine?

7 P erfino le cose inanimate che danno suono, come il flauto o la cetra, se non danno suoni distinti come si riconoscerà ciò che si suona con il flauto o con la cetra?

And even things without life giving sound, whether flute or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is played or harped?

8 E se la tromba dà un suono sconosciuto, chi si preparerà alla battaglia?

For if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

9 C osì anche voi, se con la lingua non proferite un discorso comprensibile come si capirà quello che dite? Parlerete al vento.

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue a clear and definite word, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 C i sono nel mondo non so quante specie di linguaggi e nessun linguaggio è senza significato.

There are many kinds of distinct voices in the world, and nothing is dumb.

11 S e quindi non comprendo il significato del linguaggio sarò uno straniero per chi parla, e chi parla sarà uno straniero per me.

Therefore, if I ignore the virtue of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaks as a barbarian, and he that speaks shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 C osì anche voi, poiché desiderate i doni dello Spirito, cercate di abbondarne per l’edificazione della chiesa.

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye desire the things of the Spirit, earnestly pursue excellence unto the edification of the congregation.

13 P erciò chi parla in altra lingua preghi di poter interpretare;

Therefore, let him that speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 { poiché,} se prego in altra lingua, prega lo spirito mio, ma la mia intelligenza rimane infruttuosa.

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 C he dunque? Pregherò con lo spirito, ma pregherò anche con l’intelligenza; salmeggerò con lo spirito, ma salmeggerò anche con l’intelligenza.

¶ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 A ltrimenti, se tu benedici Dio soltanto con lo spirito, colui che occupa il posto come semplice uditore come potrà dire «Amen!» alla tua preghiera di ringraziamento, visto che non sa quello che tu dici?

Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupies the place of the ignorant say, Amen, at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understands not what thou sayest?

17 Q uanto a te, certo, tu fai un bel ringraziamento, ma l’altro non è edificato.

For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I o ringrazio Dio che parlo in altre lingue più di tutti voi;

I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all;

19 m a nella chiesa preferisco dire cinque parole intelligibili per istruire anche gli altri, che dirne diecimila in altra lingua.

yet in the congregation I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 F ratelli, non siate bambini quanto al ragionare; siate pur bambini quanto a malizia, ma quanto al ragionare, siate uomini compiuti.

Brothers, be not children in understanding, howbeit in malice be ye children; but in understanding be perfect.

21 È scritto nella legge: «Parlerò a questo popolo per mezzo di persone che parlano altre lingue e per mezzo di labbra straniere; e neppure così mi ascolteranno», dice il Signore.

¶ In the law it is written, In other tongues and with other lips I will speak unto this people; and yet for all that, they will not hear me, saith the Lord.

22 Q uindi le lingue servono di segno non per i credenti, ma per i non credenti; la profezia, invece, serve di segno non per i non credenti, ma per i credenti.

Therefore, tongues are for a sign, not to those that believe, but to those that do not believe; but prophecy is not for those that do not believe, but for those who believe.

23 Q uando dunque tutta la chiesa si riunisce, se tutti parlano in altre lingue ed entrano degli estranei o dei non credenti, non diranno che siete pazzi?

If, therefore, the whole congregation is come together into one place and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

24 M a se tutti profetizzano ed entra qualche non credente o qualche estraneo, egli è convinto da tutti, è scrutato da tutti,

But if all prophesy, and there come in one that does not believe or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all;

25 i segreti del suo cuore sono svelati; e così, gettandosi giù con la faccia a terra, adorerà Dio, proclamando che Dio è veramente fra voi.

for the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed in you.

26 C he dunque, fratelli? Quando vi riunite, avendo ciascuno '> ] un salmo, o un insegnamento, o una rivelazione, o un parlare in altra lingua, o un’interpretazione, si faccia ogni cosa per l’edificazione.

¶ How is it then, brothers? when ye come together, each one of you has a psalm, has doctrine, has tongues, has revelation, has interpretation. Let all things be done unto edification.

27 S e c’è chi parla in altra lingua, siano due o tre al massimo a farlo e a turno, e uno interpreti.

If anyone speaks in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 S e non vi è chi interpreti, tacciano nell’assemblea e parlino a se stessi e a Dio.

But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silence in the congregation, and let him speak to himself and to God.

29 A nche i profeti parlino in due o tre e gli altri giudichino;

Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the others judge.

30 s e una rivelazione è data a uno di quelli che stanno seduti, il precedente taccia.

If any thing is revealed to another that sits by, let the first be silent.

31 I nfatti tutti potete profetizzare a uno a uno, perché tutti imparino e tutti siano incoraggiati.

For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.

32 G li spiriti dei profeti sono sottoposti ai profeti,

And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33 p erché Dio non è un Dio di confusione, ma di pace.

For God is not the God of disorder, but of peace, as in all the congregations of the saints.

34 C ome si fa in tutte le chiese dei santi, le donne tacciano nelle assemblee, perché non è loro permesso di parlare; stiano sottomesse, come dice anche la legge.

¶ Let your women keep silence in the congregations, for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be in subjection, as also saith the law.

35 S e vogliono imparare qualcosa, interroghino i loro mariti a casa; perché è vergognoso per una donna parlare in assemblea.

And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is a dishonest thing for women to speak in the congregation.

36 L a parola di Dio è forse proceduta da voi? O è forse pervenuta a voi soli?

¶ What? Did the word of God come out from you? or did it come unto you only?

37 S e qualcuno pensa di essere profeta o spirituale, riconosca che le cose che io vi scrivo sono comandamenti del Signore.

If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 E se qualcuno lo vuole ignorare, lo ignori.

But anyone that ignores them shall be ignored.

39 P ertanto, fratelli miei, desiderate il profetizzare e non impedite il parlare in altre lingue;

Therefore, brothers, earnestly pursue prophecy and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

40 m a ogni cosa sia fatta con dignità e con ordine.

But let all things be done decently and in order.
