1 C erta è quest’affermazione: se uno aspira all’incarico di vescovo, desidera un’attività lodevole.

¶ The Word is faithful, If anyone desires the office of a bishop, he desires a difficult ministry.

2 B isogna dunque che il vescovo sia irreprensibile, marito di una sola moglie, sobrio, prudente, dignitoso, ospitale, capace di insegnare,

It is expedient, therefore, that the bishop be blameless, the husband of only one wife, vigilant, temperate, of worldly affections mortified, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

3 n on dedito al vino né violento, ma sia mite, non litigioso, non attaccato al denaro,

not given to wine, not hurtful, not greedy of dishonest gain, but gentle, not contentious, not covetous;

4 c he governi bene la propria famiglia e tenga i figli sottomessi e pienamente rispettosi

one that rules well his own house, having his children in subjection with all integrity;

5 ( perché se uno non sa governare la propria famiglia, come potrà avere cura della chiesa di Dio?),

(for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the congregation of God?)

6 c he non sia convertito di recente, affinché non diventi presuntuoso e cada nella condanna inflitta al diavolo.

not a novice, lest being puffed up, he fall into judgment of the devil.

7 B isogna inoltre che abbia una buona testimonianza da quelli di fuori, perché non cada in discredito e nel laccio del diavolo.

Moreover he must have a good report of those who are outside lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8 A llo stesso modo i diaconi devono essere dignitosi, non doppi nel parlare, non propensi a troppo vino, non avidi di illeciti guadagni;

¶ Likewise the deacons must be honest, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of dishonest gain;

9 u omini che custodiscano il mistero della fede in una coscienza pura.

holding the mystery of the faith together with a pure conscience.

10 A nche questi siano prima provati; poi svolgano il loro servizio se sono irreprensibili.

And let these also first be proved; then let them minister, if they are blameless.

11 A llo stesso modo siano le donne dignitose, non maldicenti, sobrie, fedeli in ogni cosa.

The wives likewise are to be honest, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things.

12 I diaconi siano mariti di una sola moglie, e governino bene i loro figli e le loro famiglie.

Let the deacons be the husbands of only one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13 P erché quelli che hanno svolto bene il compito di diaconi si acquistano un grado onorabile e una grande franchezza nella fede che è in Cristo Gesù. Mistero della pietà

For those that minister well purchase to themselves a good degree and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14 T i scrivo queste cose sperando di venire presto da te,

¶ These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly

15 a ffinché tu sappia, nel caso che dovessi tardare, come bisogna comportarsi nella casa di Dio, che è la chiesa del Dio vivente, colonna e sostegno della verità.

But if I tarry long, that thou may know how it is expedient to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the congregation of the living God, the pillar and base of the truth.

16 S enza dubbio, grande è il mistero della pietà: Colui che è stato manifestato in carne, è stato giustificato nello Spirito, è apparso agli angeli, è stato predicato fra le nazioni, è stato creduto nel mondo, è stato elevato in gloria.

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
