1 A l direttore del coro. Di Davide, servo del Signore, il quale rivolse al Signore le parole di questo cantico, quando il Signore lo liberò dalla mano di Saul. Egli disse: «Io ti amo, o Signore, mia forza!

¶ I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.

2 I l Signore è la mia rocca, la mia fortezza, il mio liberatore; il mio Dio, la mia rupe, in cui mi rifugio, il mio scudo, il mio potente salvatore, il mio alto rifugio.

The LORD is my rock and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

3 I o invocai il Signore, che è degno d’ogni lode, e fui salvato dai miei nemici.

I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, so shall I be saved from my enemies.

4 I legami della morte mi avevano circondato, i torrenti della distruzione mi avevano spaventato.

The pain of death compassed me, and the rivers of Belial made me afraid.

5 I legami del soggiorno dei morti mi avevano attorniato, i lacci della morte mi avevano sorpreso.

The pain of Sheol compassed me about: the snares of death came before me.

6 N ella mia angoscia invocai il Signore, gridai al mio Dio. Egli udì la mia voce dal suo tempio, il mio grido giunse a lui, ai suoi orecchi.

In my distress I called upon the LORD and cried unto my God; he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

7 A llora la terra fu scossa e tremò, le fondamenta dei monti furono smosse e scrollate; perché egli era colmo di sdegno.

Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of the mountains collapsed and were removed because he was wroth.

8 U n fumo saliva dalle sue narici; un fuoco consumante gli usciva dalla bocca e ne venivano fuori carboni accesi.

Smoke went up out of his nostrils, and fire devoured out of his mouth; coals were kindled by it.

9 E gli abbassò i cieli e discese, una fitta nube aveva sotto i piedi.

He lowered the heavens and came down; and darkness was under his feet.

10 C avalcava un cherubino e volava; volava veloce sulle ali del vento.

And he rode upon a cherub and flew: yea, he flew upon the wings of the wind.

11 A veva fatto delle tenebre la sua stanza nascosta; aveva posto intorno a sé, per suo padiglione, l’oscurità delle acque, le dense nubi dei cieli.

He made darkness his hiding place; in his tabernacle round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the heavens.

12 P er lo splendore che emanava da lui, le dense nubi si sciolsero con grandine e con carboni ardenti.

At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.

13 I l Signore tuonò nei cieli, l’Altissimo fece udire la sua voce con grandine e con carboni ardenti.

The LORD thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

14 S cagliò le sue saette e disperse i nemici; lanciò folgori in gran numero e li mise in fuga.

He sent out his arrows and scattered them; he shot out lightnings and destroyed them.

15 A llora apparve il fondo del mare e le fondamenta del mondo furono scoperte al tuo rimprovero, o Signore, al soffio del vento delle tue narici.

Then the depths of the waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

16 E gli tese dall’alto la mano e mi prese, mi trasse fuori dalle grandi acque.

He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.

17 M i liberò dal mio potente nemico, da quelli che mi odiavano, perché erano più forti di me.

He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me, even though they were too strong for me.

18 E ssi mi erano piombati addosso nel dì della mia calamità, ma il Signore fu il mio sostegno.

They were ready for me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my staff.

19 E gli mi trasse fuori al largo, mi liberò, perché mi gradisce.

He brought me forth also into a wide place; he delivered me because he delighted in me.

20 I l Signore mi ha ricompensato secondo la mia giustizia, mi ha reso secondo la purezza delle mie mani,

¶ The LORD will reward me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he shall recompense me.

21 p oiché ho osservato le vie del Signore e non mi sono allontanato dal mio Dio, comportandomi da empio.

Because I have kept the ways of the LORD and did not become wicked departing in apostasy from my God.

22 P oiché ho tenuto tutte le sue leggi davanti a me e non ho rifiutato i suoi precetti.

For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.

23 S ono stato integro verso di lui, mi sono guardato dalla mia iniquità.

I was perfect before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.

24 P erciò il Signore mi ha ripagato secondo la mia giustizia, secondo la purezza delle mie mani in sua presenza.

Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.

25 T u ti mostri pietoso verso il pio, integro verso l’uomo integro;

With the merciful thou wilt show thyself merciful; with a perfect man thou wilt show thyself perfect;

26 t i mostri puro con il puro e ti mostri astuto con il perverso;

with the pure thou wilt show thyself pure; and with the perverse thou wilt show thyself adversary.

27 p oiché tu sei colui che salva la gente afflitta e fa abbassare gli occhi alteri.

Therefore thou wilt save the humble people; but wilt bring down high looks.

28 S ì, tu fai risplendere la mia lampada; il Signore, il mio Dio, illumina le mie tenebre.

For thou wilt light my fire: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

29 C on te io assalgo tutta una schiera, con il mio Dio salgo sulle mura.

¶ For with thee I have scattered armies; and in my God I have overcome walled defenses.

30 L a via di Dio è perfetta; la parola del Signore è purificata con il fuoco; egli è lo scudo di tutti quelli che sperano in lui.

As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is precise: a shield to all those that wait in him.

31 P oiché chi è Dio all’infuori del Signore ? E chi è Rocca all’infuori del nostro Dio,

For who is God except the LORD? or who is a refuge except our God?

32 i l Dio che mi cinge di forza e rende la mia via retta?

It is God that girds me with strength and makes my way perfect.

33 E gli rende i miei piedi simili a quelli delle cerve, mi rende saldo sulle mie alture;

He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and sets me upon my high places.

34 a ddestra le mie mani alla battaglia e le mie braccia tendono un arco di bronzo.

He trains my hands for the battle, so that a bow of bronze shall be broken by my arms.

35 T u mi hai anche dato lo scudo della tua salvezza, la tua destra mi ha sostenuto, la tua bontà mi ha reso grande.

In the same manner thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand will hold me up, and thy meekness shall multiply me.

36 T u hai allargato la via davanti ai miei passi e i miei piedi non hanno vacillato.

Thou shall enlarge my steps under me, and my knees shall not tremble.

37 H o inseguito i miei nemici e li ho raggiunti; non sono tornato indietro prima di averli distrutti.

I shall pursue my enemies and overtake them: neither shall I turn again until they are consumed.

38 L i ho abbattuti e non sono potuti risorgere; sono caduti sotto i miei piedi.

I shall smite them, and they will not be able to rise: they shall fall under my feet.

39 T u m’hai cinto di forza per la guerra; tu hai fatto piegare sotto di me i miei avversari;

For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued my enemies under me.

40 h ai fatto voltare le spalle davanti a me ai miei nemici e ho distrutto quelli che mi odiavano.

Thou hast also given me the necks of my enemies that I might destroy those that hate me.

41 H anno gridato, ma nessuno li ha salvati; hanno gridato al Signore, ma egli non ha risposto.

They cried out, but there was no one to save them: even unto the LORD, but he did not answer them.

42 I o li ho tritati come polvere al vento, li ho spazzati via come il fango delle strade.

Then I beat them as small as the dust before the wind: I scattered them as the dirt in the streets.

43 T u mi hai liberato dal popolo in rivolta, mi hai costituito capo di nazioni; un popolo che non conoscevo mi è stato sottomesso.

Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the Gentiles: a people whom I did not know served me.

44 A l solo udir parlare di me, mi hanno ubbidito; i figli degli stranieri mi hanno reso omaggio.

As soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me: the sons of strangers submitted themselves unto me even against their will.

45 I figli degli stranieri si sono persi d’animo, sono usciti tremanti dai loro nascondigli.

The strangers fell away and were afraid in their close places.

46 I l Signore vive: sia benedetta la mia Rocca! Sia esaltato il Dio della mia salvezza!

The LORD lives; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

47 I l Dio che fa la mia vendetta e mi sottomette i popoli,

It is God that avenges me and subdues the peoples under me.

48 c he mi libera dai miei nemici. Sì, tu m’innalzi sopra i miei avversari, mi salvi dall’uomo violento.

He delivers me from my enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the one who would betray me.

49 P erciò, o Signore, ti loderò tra le nazioni e salmeggerò al tuo nome.

Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the Gentiles and sing praises unto thy name.

50 G randi liberazioni egli accorda al suo re, usa benevolenza verso il suo unto, verso Davide e la sua discendenza in eterno».

He gives great deliverance to his king and shows mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.
