1 C antico di Asaf. Ascolta, popolo mio, il mio insegnamento; porgete orecchio alle parole della mia bocca!

¶ Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

2 I o aprirò la mia bocca per esprimere parabole, esporrò i misteri dei tempi antichi.

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter enigmas of old,

3 Q uel che abbiamo udito e conosciuto, e che i nostri padri ci hanno raccontato,

which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

4 n on lo nasconderemo ai loro figli; diremo alla generazione futura le lodi del Signore, la sua potenza e le meraviglie che egli ha operate.

We will not hide them from their sons, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD and his strength and his wonderful works that he has done.

5 E gli stabilì una testimonianza in Giacobbe, istituì una legge in Israele e ordinò ai nostri padri di farle conoscere ai loro figli,

For he established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their sons:

6 p erché fossero note alla generazione futura, ai figli che sarebbero nati. Questi le avrebbero così raccontate ai loro figli,

That the generation to come might know them, even the sons which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their sons

7 p erché ponessero in Dio la loro speranza e non dimenticassero le opere di Dio, ma osservassero i suoi comandamenti.

that they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God but keep his commandments

8 T utto ciò per non essere come i loro padri, una generazione ostinata e ribelle, una generazione dal cuore incostante, il cui spirito non fu fedele a Dio.

and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set their heart aright and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.

9 I figli di Efraim, gente di guerra, buoni arcieri, voltarono le spalle il dì della battaglia.

¶ The sons of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.

10 N on osservarono il patto di Dio e rifiutarono di camminare secondo la sua legge;

They did not keep the covenant of God and refused to walk in his law

11 d imenticarono le sue opere e i prodigi che egli aveva mostrati loro.

and forgot his works and his wonders that he had showed them.

12 E gli aveva compiuto meraviglie in presenza dei loro padri, nel paese d’Egitto, nelle campagne di Soan.

He did marvellous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

13 D ivise il mare, li fece passare e fermò le acque come in un mucchio.

He divided the sea and caused them to pass through, and he made the waters to stand as a heap.

14 D i giorno li guidò con una nuvola e tutta la notte con un fuoco fiammeggiante.

In the daytime also he led them with a cloud and all the night with a light of fire.

15 S paccò le rocce nel deserto e li dissetò abbondantemente, come da sorgenti d’acque profonde.

He clave the rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

16 F ece scaturire ruscelli dalla rupe, fece sgorgare acque come fiumi.

He brought streams also out of the rock and caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 M a essi continuarono a peccare contro di lui, a ribellarsi contro l’Altissimo, nel deserto.

And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

18 T entarono Dio in cuor loro, chiedendo cibo secondo le proprie voglie.

And they tempted God in their heart by asking for food according to the desires of their soul.

19 P arlarono contro Dio, dicendo: «Potrebbe Dio imbandirci una mensa nel deserto?

And they spoke against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

20 E cco, egli percosse la roccia e ne sgorgarono acque, ne strariparono torrenti; potrebbe darci anche del pane e provvedere di carne il suo popolo?»

Behold, he smote the rock that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

21 P erciò il Signore, quando l’udì, si adirò aspramente e un fuoco si accese contro Giacobbe; l’ira sua si infuriò contro Israele,

Therefore the LORD heard this and was wroth, so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel

22 p erché non avevano creduto in Dio, né avevano avuto fiducia nella sua salvezza.

because they had not believed God, nor had they trusted in his saving health;

23 E ppure egli comandò alle nuvole dall’alto, aprì le porte del cielo,

and he commanded the clouds of above and opened the doors of the heavens

24 f ece piovere su di essi la manna per nutrimento e diede loro il frumento del cielo.

and caused manna to rain upon them to eat and gave them wheat of the heavens.

25 E ssi mangiarono il pane dei potenti; egli mandò loro cibo a sazietà.

Man did eat the food of the strong; he sent them food to the full.

26 S catenò in cielo il vento orientale e con la sua potenza fece alzare il vento del mezzogiorno;

He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven, and by his power he brought in the south wind.

27 f ece piovere su di loro carne come polvere, uccelli alati, numerosi come sabbia del mare;

He rained flesh also upon them as dust and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:

28 l i fece cadere in mezzo al loro accampamento, intorno alle loro tende.

And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

29 C osì essi mangiarono, furono saziati e Dio mandò loro quel che avevano desiderato.

So they did eat and were well filled; for he gave them their own desire;

30 N on era ancora stata soddisfatta la loro ingordigia, avevano ancora il cibo in bocca,

they were not estranged from their lust. But while their food was yet in their mouths,

31 q uando l’ira di Dio si scatenò contro di loro, uccise i più vigorosi e abbatté i giovani d’Israele.

the wrath of God came upon them and slew the fattest of them and smote down the chosen of Israel.

32 C on tutto ciò peccarono ancora, non prestando fede ai suoi prodigi.

For all this they sinned still and did not give him credit for his wondrous works.

33 P erciò egli consumò i loro giorni in un niente e i loro anni con un terrore improvviso.

Therefore he consumed their days in vanity and their years in tribulation.

34 Q uando li faceva perire, essi lo cercavano e ritornavano desiderosi di ritrovare Dio;

When he slew them, then they sought him, and they returned and enquired early after God.

35 e si ricordavano che Dio era la loro rocca, che il Dio altissimo era il loro liberatore.

And they remembered that God was their rock and the high God their redeemer.

36 E ssi però lo adulavano con la bocca e gli mentivano con la lingua.

Nevertheless they flattered him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

37 I l loro cuore non era sincero con lui e non erano fedeli al suo patto.

For their heart was not right with him, neither were they steadfast in his covenant.

38 M a egli, che è pietoso, perdona l’iniquità e non distrugge il peccatore. Più volte trattenne la sua ira e non lasciò divampare tutto il suo sdegno,

But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; many a time turned he his anger away and did not stir up all his wrath.

39 r icordando che essi erano carne, un soffio che va e non ritorna.

For he remembered that they were but flesh: a wind that passes away and does not come again.

40 Q uante volte si ribellarono a lui nel deserto e lo rattristarono in quella solitudine!

¶ How often did they provoke him in the wilderness and grieve him in the desert!

41 M a ricominciarono a tentare Dio e a provocare il Santo d’Israele.

And they turned back and tempted God and limited the Holy One of Israel.

42 N on si ricordarono più della sua mano, del giorno in cui egli li liberò dal nemico,

They did not remember his hand, nor the day when he ransomed them from anguish.

43 q uando operò i suoi miracoli in Egitto e i suoi prodigi nelle campagne di Soan.

How he had wrought his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the field of Zoan

44 E gli mutò i loro fiumi e i loro ruscelli in sangue, perché non vi potessero più bere.

and had turned their rivers into blood and their floods, that they could not drink.

45 M andò contro di loro mosche velenose a divorarli e rane a molestarli.

He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.

46 D iede il loro raccolto ai bruchi e il frutto della loro fatica alle cavallette.

He gave also their fruits unto the caterpillar and their works unto the locust.

47 D istrusse le loro vigne con la grandine e i loro sicomori con i grossi chicchi d’essa.

He destroyed their vines with hail and their wild fig trees with stones.

48 A bbandonò il loro bestiame alla grandine e le loro greggi ai fulmini.

He gave up their cattle also to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts of fire.

49 S catenò su di loro il furore del suo sdegno, ira, indignazione e tribolazione, una moltitudine di messaggeri di sventure.

He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation and trouble by sending evil angels among them.

50 D iede sfogo alla sua ira; non preservò dalla morte la loro anima, ma abbandonò la loro vita alla peste.

He made a way to his anger; he did not spare their soul from death but gave their life over to the pestilence

51 P ercosse tutti i primogeniti d’Egitto, le primizie del vigore nelle tende di Cam;

and smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham:

52 m a fece partire il suo popolo come un gregge e lo guidò attraverso il deserto come una mandria.

But made his own people to go forth like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 L i condusse sicuri e senza timore, mentre il mare inghiottiva i loro nemici.

And he led them on safely, so that they feared not; but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54 L i fece arrivare alla sua terra santa, al monte che la sua destra aveva conquistato.

And he brought them into the borders of his holiness, into this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

55 S cacciò le nazioni davanti a loro, assegnò loro a sorte il territorio come eredità e fece abitare le tribù d’Israele nelle tende di quelli.

He cast out the Gentiles also before them and divided them an inheritance by line and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their habitations.

56 M a essi tentarono il Dio altissimo, si ribellarono e non osservarono i suoi statuti.

Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God and did not keep his testimonies:

57 S i sviarono e furono sleali come i loro padri; si rivoltarono come un arco fallace;

But turned back and rebelled like their fathers; they became like a deceitful bow.

58 l o provocarono a ira con i loro alti luoghi, lo resero geloso con i loro idoli.

For they provoked him to anger with their high places and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

59 D io udì, si adirò, ed ebbe per Israele grande avversione,

God heard this and was wroth and greatly abhorred Israel:

60 a bbandonò il tabernacolo di Silo, la tenda in cui aveva abitato fra gli uomini;

For this reason he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent in which he dwelt among men

61 l asciò condurre la sua forza in schiavitù e lasciò cadere la sua gloria in mano al nemico.

and delivered his strength into captivity and his glory into the enemy’s hand.

62 A bbandonò il suo popolo alla spada e si adirò contro la sua eredità.

He gave his people over also unto the sword and was wroth with his inheritance.

63 I l fuoco consumò i loro giovani e le loro vergini non ebbero canto nuziale.

The fire consumed their young men; and their virgins were not honored in marriage songs.

64 I loro sacerdoti caddero di spada e le loro vedove non fecero lamento.

Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

65 P oi il Signore si risvegliò come dal sonno, simile a un prode che grida eccitato dal vino.

Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep and like a mighty man that shouts by reason of wine.

66 C olpì i suoi nemici alle spalle, li coprì di eterna vergogna.

And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts; he put them to a perpetual reproach.

67 R ipudiò la tenda di Giuseppe e non scelse la tribù di Efraim;

Moreover he refused the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim:

68 m a elesse la tribù di Giuda, il monte Sion che egli amava.

But chose the tribe of Judah, the Mount Zion which he loved.

69 C ostruì il suo tempio, simile a luoghi altissimi, come la terra che egli ha fondata per sempre.

And he built his sanctuary in preeminence like the earth which he has established for ever.

70 S celse Davide, suo servo, lo prese dagli ovili;

He chose David also his slave and took him from the sheepfolds,

71 l o portò via alle pecore che allattavano, per pascere Giacobbe, suo popolo, e Israele, sua eredità.

from following the ewes great with young, he brought him to feed Jacob his people and Israel his inheritance.

72 E d egli si curò di loro con un cuore integro e li guidò con mano sapiente.

So he fed them out of the integrity of his heart and guided them by the intelligence of his hands.
