1 I l Signore disse a Samuele: «Fino a quando farai cordoglio per Saul, mentre io l’ho rigettato perché non regni più sopra Israele? Riempi d’olio il tuo corno e va’; ti manderò da Isai di Betlemme, perché mi sono provveduto un re tra i suoi figli».

¶ And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil and go; I will send thee to Jesse of Bethlehem for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 S amuele rispose: «Come posso andare? Saul lo verrà a sapere e mi ucciderà». Il Signore disse: «Prenderai con te una giovenca e dirai: “Sono venuto a offrire un sacrificio al Signore ”.

And Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul understands it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take a heifer with thee and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.

3 I nviterai Isai al sacrificio; io ti farò sapere quello che dovrai fare e tu ungerai per me colui che ti dirò».

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do, and thou shalt anoint unto me the one whom I name unto thee.

4 S amuele dunque fece quello che il Signore gli aveva detto e andò a Betlemme. Gli anziani della città gli andarono incontro turbati, e gli chiesero: «Vieni in pace?»

And Samuel did as the LORD said and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming and said, Comest thou peaceably?

5 E d egli rispose: «Pace! Vengo a offrire un sacrificio al Signore; purificatevi e venite con me al sacrificio». Fece anche purificare Isai e i suoi figli e li invitò al sacrificio.

And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.

6 M entre entravano, egli pensò, vedendo Eliab: «Certo l’unto del Signore è qui davanti a lui».

¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab and said, Peradventure is the LORD’s anointed before him?

7 M a il Signore disse a Samuele: «Non badare al suo aspetto né alla sua statura, perché io l’ho scartato; infatti il Signore non bada a ciò che colpisce lo sguardo dell’uomo: l’uomo guarda all’apparenza, ma il Signore guarda al cuore».

And the LORD replied unto Samuel, Do not look on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him, for it is not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

8 A llora Isai chiamò Abinadab e lo fece passare davanti a Samuele; ma Samuele disse: «Il Signore non si è scelto neppure questo».

Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one.

9 I sai fece passare Samma, ma Samuele disse: «Il Signore non si è scelto neppure questo».

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one.

10 I sai fece passare così sette dei suoi figli davanti a Samuele; ma Samuele disse a Isai: «Il Signore non si è scelto questi».

Again, Jesse made his seven sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD has not chosen these.

11 P oi Samuele disse a Isai: «Sono questi tutti i tuoi figli?» Isai rispose: «Resta ancora il più giovane, ma è al pascolo con le pecore». Samuele disse a Isai: «Mandalo a cercare, perché non ci metteremo a mangiare prima che sia arrivato qua».

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are all thy young men here? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he keeps the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send for him, for we will not sit down to the table until he comes here.

12 I sai dunque lo mandò a cercare, e lo fece venire. Egli era biondo, aveva begli occhi e un bell’aspetto. Il Signore disse a Samuele: «Àlzati, ungilo, perché è lui».

And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and of a beautiful countenance and handsome. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.

13 A llora Samuele prese il corno dell’olio e lo unse in mezzo ai suoi fratelli; da quel giorno lo Spirito del Signore investì Davide. Poi Samuele si alzò e se ne tornò a Rama. Davide al servizio di Saul

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

14 L o Spirito del Signore si era ritirato da Saul; e uno spirito cattivo, permesso dal Signore, lo turbava.

¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

15 I servitori di Saul gli dissero: «Ecco, un cattivo spirito permesso da Dio ti turba.

And Saul’s slaves said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles thee.

16 O rdini ora il nostro signore ai tuoi servi, che stanno davanti a te, di cercare un uomo che sappia suonare l’arpa; quando il cattivo spirito permesso da Dio verrà su di te, l’arpista si metterà a suonare e tu ti sentirai meglio».

Let our lord now command thy slaves, which are before thee, to seek out a man who is a cunning player on a harp, and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand and thou shalt have relief.

17 S aul disse ai suoi servitori: «Trovatemi un uomo che suoni bene, e conducetelo qui».

And Saul said unto his slaves, Provide me now a man that can play well and bring him to me.

18 A llora uno dei giovani prese a dire: «Ho visto un figlio di Isai, il Betlemmita, che sa suonare; è un uomo forte, valoroso, un guerriero, parla bene, è di bell’aspetto e il Signore è con lui».

Then one of the servants answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem, that is cunning in playing and a mighty valiant man and a man of war and prudent in speech and handsome, and the LORD is with him.

19 S aul dunque inviò dei messaggeri da Isai per dirgli: «Mandami Davide, tuo figlio, che è con il gregge».

Therefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse and said, Send me David, thy son, who is with the sheep.

20 E Isai prese un asino carico di pane, un otre di vino, un capretto e mandò tutto a Saul per mezzo di Davide suo figlio.

And Jesse took an ass laden with bread and a bottle of wine and a kid and sent them by David, his son, unto Saul.

21 D avide arrivò da Saul e si presentò a lui; Saul gli si affezionò molto e lo fece suo scudiero.

And David came to Saul and stood before him; and he loved him greatly, and he became his armourbearer.

22 S aul mandò a dire a Isai: «Ti prego, lascia Davide al mio servizio, perché egli ha trovato grazia agli occhi miei».

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he has found favour in my sight.

23 O r quando il cattivo spirito permesso da Dio veniva su Saul, Davide prendeva l’arpa e si metteva a suonare; Saul si calmava, stava meglio e il cattivo spirito andava via da lui.

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp and played with his hand; so Saul was refreshed and was better, and the evil spirit departed from him.
