1 I o, Paolo, vi esorto per la mansuetudine e la mitezza di Cristo; io, che quando sono presente tra di voi sono umile, ma quando sono assente sono ardito nei vostri confronti,

¶ Now I, Paul, myself beseech you by the meekness and clemency of the Christ (who in presence am low among you, but being absent am bold toward you)

2 v i prego di non obbligarmi, quando sarò presente, a procedere arditamente con quella fermezza con la quale intendo agire contro taluni che pensano che noi camminiamo secondo la carne.

but I beseech you that I need not be bold when I am present with that confidence, with which I am esteemed to use against some who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh.

3 I n realtà, sebbene viviamo nella carne, non combattiamo secondo la carne;

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh

4 i nfatti le armi della nostra guerra non sono carnali, ma hanno da Dio il potere di distruggere le fortezze, poiché demoliamo i ragionamenti

(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God for the destruction of strong holds),

5 e tutto ciò che si eleva orgogliosamente contro la conoscenza di Dio, facendo prigioniero ogni pensiero fino a renderlo ubbidiente a Cristo;

casting down reasonings and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ

6 e siamo pronti a punire ogni disubbidienza, quando la vostra ubbidienza sarà completa.

and having a readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

7 V oi guardate all’apparenza delle cose. Se uno è convinto dentro di sé di appartenere a Cristo, consideri anche questo dentro di sé: che com’egli è di Cristo, così lo siamo anche noi.

¶ Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If anyone trusts to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that as he is Christ’s, even so we are Christ’s.

8 I nfatti, se anche volessi vantarmi un po’ più della nostra autorità, che il Signore ha data per la vostra edificazione e non per la vostra rovina, non avrei motivo di vergognarmi.

For though I should glory somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed,

9 D ico questo perché non sembri che io cerchi d’intimidirvi con le mie lettere.

That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.

10 Q ualcuno dice infatti: «Le sue lettere sono severe e forti, ma la sua presenza fisica è debole e la sua parola è cosa da nulla».

For his letters, they say, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.

11 Q uel tale si convinca che come siamo a parole, per mezzo delle lettere, quando siamo assenti, così saremo anche a fatti quando saremo presenti.

Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.

12 P oiché noi non abbiamo il coraggio di classificarci o confrontarci con certuni che si raccomandano da sé; i quali però, misurandosi secondo la loro propria misura e paragonandosi tra di loro stessi, mancano d’intelligenza.

¶ For we dare not mix ourselves in with or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves, but they do not understand that they are measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves among themselves.

13 N oi, invece, non ci vanteremo oltre misura, ma entro la misura del campo di attività di cui Dio ci ha segnato i limiti, dandoci di giungere anche fino a voi.

But we will not glory of things beyond our measure, but according to the measure of the rule, of the measure which God has distributed to us, to reach even unto you.

14 N oi infatti non oltrepassiamo i nostri limiti come se non fossimo giunti fino a voi; perché siamo realmente giunti fino a voi con il vangelo di Cristo.

For we do not overextend ourselves by reaching unto you; for we are also come unto you with the gospel of the Christ,

15 N on ci vantiamo oltre misura di fatiche altrui, ma nutriamo speranza che, crescendo la vostra fede, saremo tenuti in maggiore considerazione tra di voi nei limiti del campo di attività assegnatoci,

Not glorying of things beyond our measure in the labours of others; but having hope of the increase of your faith, that we shall be abundantly enlarged among you according to our rule,

16 p er poter evangelizzare anche i paesi che sono al di là del vostro senza vantarci, nel campo altrui, di cose già preparate.

to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, without entering into the measure of another to glory in that which has already been made ready.

17 M a chi si vanta, si vanti nel Signore.

But he that glories, let him glory in the Lord.

18 P erché non colui che si raccomanda da sé è approvato, ma colui che il Signore raccomanda.

For it is not he that commends himself that is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
