1 D iceva loro: «In verità vi dico che alcuni di coloro che sono qui presenti non gusteranno la morte finché non abbiano visto il regno di Dio venuto con potenza». La trasfigurazione

¶ He also said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there are some of those who are here who shall not taste of death until they have seen the kingdom of God which comes with power.

2 S ei giorni dopo Gesù prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e li condusse soli, in disparte, sopra un alto monte. E fu trasfigurato in loro presenza;

And six days afterwards Jesus took Peter and James and John, and separated them apart by themselves unto a high mountain; and he was transfigured before them.

3 l e sue vesti divennero sfolgoranti, candidissime, di un tale candore che nessun lavandaio sulla terra può dare.

And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, so as no fuller on earth can white them.

4 E apparve loro Elia con Mosè, i quali stavano conversando con Gesù.

And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.

5 P ietro, rivoltosi a Gesù, disse: «Rabbì, è bello stare qua; facciamo tre tende: una per te, una per Mosè e una per Elia».

Then Peter answering, said unto Jesus, Master, it shall be good for us to remain here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for thee, and another for Moses, and another for Elijah.

6 I nfatti non sapeva che cosa dire, perché erano stati presi da spavento.

For he knew not what he was saying, for he was beside himself.

7 P oi venne una nuvola che li coprì con la sua ombra; e dalla nuvola una voce: «Questo è il mio diletto Figlio; ascoltatelo!»

And a cloud came that overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear ye him.

8 E a un tratto, guardatisi attorno, non videro più nessuno con loro, se non Gesù solo.

And suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one any more, except Jesus only with themselves.

9 P oi, mentre scendevano dal monte, egli ordinò loro di non raccontare a nessuno le cose che avevano viste, se non quando il Figlio dell’uomo fosse risuscitato dai morti.

And as they came down from the mountain, he commanded them that they should tell no one what things they had seen until the Son of man was risen from the dead.

10 E ssi tennero per sé la cosa, domandandosi tra di loro che significasse quel risuscitare dai morti.

And they kept the word within themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should be.

11 P oi gli chiesero: «Perché gli scribi dicono che prima deve venire Elia?»

And they asked him, saying, Why do the scribes say that Elijah must first come?

12 E gli disse loro: «Elia deve venire prima e ristabilire ogni cosa; e come mai sta scritto del Figlio dell’uomo che egli deve patire molte cose ed essere disprezzato?

And he answered and told them, Elijah verily shall come first and restore all things and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things and be esteemed as nothing.

13 M a io vi dico che Elia è già venuto e, come è scritto di lui, gli hanno anche fatto quello che hanno voluto». Gesù guarisce un indemoniato

But I say unto you, That Elijah has indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they wished, as it is written of him.

14 G iunti presso i discepoli, videro intorno a loro una gran folla e degli scribi che discutevano con loro.

¶ And as he came to the disciples, he saw a great multitude about them and scribes that disputed with them.

15 S ubito tutta la gente, come vide Gesù, fu sorpresa e accorse a salutarlo.

And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

16 E gli domandò: «Di che cosa discutete con loro?»

And he asked the scribes, What dispute ye with them?

17 U no della folla gli rispose: «Maestro, ho condotto da te mio figlio che ha uno spirito muto;

And one of the multitude answering, said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, who has a dumb spirit;

18 e , quando si impadronisce di lui, dovunque sia, lo fa cadere a terra; egli schiuma, stride i denti e rimane rigido. Ho detto ai tuoi discepoli che lo scacciassero, ma non hanno potuto».

and wherever he takes him, he tears him, and he foams and gnashes with his teeth and pines away; and I spoke to thy disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not.

19 G esù disse loro: «O generazione incredula! Fino a quando sarò con voi? Fino a quando vi sopporterò? Portatelo qui da me».

Answering, he said unto him, O unfaithful generation, how long shall I be with you? How long must I suffer you? Bring him unto me.

20 G lielo condussero; e come vide Gesù, subito lo spirito cominciò a contorcere il ragazzo con le convulsioni; e, caduto a terra, si rotolava schiumando.

And they brought him unto him; and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tore him; and he fell on the ground and wallowed foaming.

21 G esù domandò al padre: «Da quanto tempo gli avviene questo?» Egli disse: «Dalla sua infanzia;

And Jesus asked his father, How long ago is it since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

22 e spesse volte lo ha gettato anche nel fuoco e nell’acqua per farlo perire; ma tu, se puoi fare qualcosa, abbi pietà di noi e aiutaci».

And ofttimes it has cast him into the fire and into the waters to kill him, but if thou canst do any thing, help us, having mercy on us.

23 E Gesù gli disse: «Dici: “Se puoi!” Ogni cosa è possibile per chi crede ».

And Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe this, all things are possible to him that believes.

24 S ubito il padre del bambino esclamò: «Io credo; vieni in aiuto alla mia incredulità».

And straightway the father of the child crying out with tears, said, Lord, I believe; help thou my unbelief.

25 G esù, vedendo che la folla accorreva, sgridò lo spirito immondo, dicendogli: «Spirito muto e sordo, io te lo comando, esci da lui e non rientrarvi più».

When Jesus saw that the multitude concurred, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee, come out of him and enter no more into him.

26 L o spirito, gridando e straziandolo forte, uscì; e il bambino rimase come morto, e quasi tutti dicevano: «È morto».

Then the spirit, crying out and rending him sore, came out; and he remained as one dead, insomuch that many said that he was dead.

27 M a Gesù, presolo per mano, lo sollevò ed egli si alzò in piedi.

But Jesus, taking him by the hand, straightened him up; and he arose.

28 Q uando Gesù fu entrato in casa, i suoi discepoli gli domandarono in privato: «Perché non abbiamo potuto scacciarlo noi?»

And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

29 E gli disse loro: «Questa specie di spiriti non si può fare uscire in altro modo che con la preghiera ». Secondo annuncio della Passione

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

30 P oi, partiti di là, attraversarono la Galilea; ma egli non voleva che si sapesse.

¶ And having left there, they walked together through Galilee; and he did not wish that anyone should know of it.

31 I nfatti stava istruendo i suoi discepoli, dicendo loro: «Il Figlio dell’uomo sta per essere dato nelle mani degli uomini ed essi l’uccideranno; ma tre giorni dopo essere stato ucciso risusciterà ».

For he went on teaching his disciples and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after he is dead, he shall rise the third day.

32 M a essi non capivano le sue parole e temevano d’interrogarlo. L’umiltà, segreto della vera grandezza

But they did not understand this word and were afraid to ask him.

33 G iunsero a Capernaum; quando fu in casa, domandò loro: «Di che discorrevate per strada?»

And he came to Capernaum; and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves on the way?

34 E ssi tacevano, perché per via avevano discusso tra di loro chi fosse il più grande.

But they were silent; for on the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

35 A llora, sedutosi, chiamò i dodici e disse loro: «Se qualcuno vuole essere il primo, sarà l’ultimo di tutti e il servitore di tutti».

Then, sitting down, he called the twelve and said unto them, If anyone desires to be first, the same shall be last of all and servant of all.

36 E preso un bambino, lo mise in mezzo a loro; poi lo prese in braccio e disse loro:

And taking a child, he set him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms, he said unto them,

37 « Chiunque riceve uno di questi bambini nel nome mio, riceve me; e chiunque riceve me, non riceve me, ma colui che mi ha mandato». Condanna dello spirito settario

Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receives me; and whosoever shall receive me, receives not me, but him that sent me.

38 G iovanni gli disse: «Maestro, noi abbiamo visto uno che scacciava i demòni nel tuo nome e glielo abbiamo vietato perché non ci seguiva ».

And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name and he does not follow us; and we forbade him because he does not follow us.

39 M a Gesù disse: «Non glielo vietate, perché non c’è nessuno che faccia qualche opera potente nel mio nome e subito dopo possa parlar male di me.

But Jesus said, Forbid him not, for there is no one who does a miracle in my name that can then speak evil of me.

40 C hi non è contro di noi, è per noi.

For he that is not against us is for us.

41 C hiunque vi avrà dato da bere un bicchier d’acqua nel nome mio, perché siete di Cristo, in verità vi dico che non perderà la sua ricompensa. Avvertimento contro tutto ciò che è motivo di scandalo

¶ For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name because ye are of the Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

42 « E chiunque avrà scandalizzato uno di questi piccoli che credono {in me}, meglio sarebbe per lui che gli fosse messa al collo una macina da mulino e fosse gettato in mare.

And whosoever shall be a stumbling block to one of these little ones that believe in me, it would be better for him if a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

43 S e la tua mano ti fa cadere in peccato, tagliala; meglio è per te entrare monco nella vita, che avere due mani e andartene nella geenna, nel fuoco inestinguibile [,

And if thy hand causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched,

44 d ove il verme loro non muore e il fuoco non si spegne ].

where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched.

45 S e il tuo piede ti fa cadere in peccato, taglialo; meglio è per te entrare zoppo nella vita, che avere due piedi ed essere gettato nella geenna [, nel fuoco inestinguibile

And if thy foot causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched,

46 d ove il verme loro non muore e il fuoco non si spegne ].

where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched.

47 S e l’occhio tuo ti fa cadere in peccato, cavalo; meglio è per te entrare con un occhio solo nel regno di Dio, che avere due occhi ed essere gettato nella geenna,

And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out; it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell,

48 d ove il verme loro non muore e il fuoco non si spegne.

where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched.

49 P oiché ognuno sarà salato con il fuoco.

For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

50 I l sale è buono; ma se il sale diventa insipido, con che gli darete sapore? Abbiate del sale in voi stessi e state in pace gli uni con gli altri».

Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltness, with what will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
