1 Q uanto alle carni sacrificate agli idoli, sappiamo che tutti abbiamo conoscenza. La conoscenza gonfia, ma l’amore edifica.

¶ Now as concerning things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but charity edifies.

2 S e qualcuno pensa di conoscere qualcosa, non sa ancora come si deve conoscere;

And if anyone thinks that they know anything, they know nothing yet as they ought to know.

3 m a se qualcuno ama Dio, è conosciuto da lui.

But if anyone loves God, the same is known of him.

4 Q uanto dunque al mangiare carni sacrificate agli idoli, sappiamo che l’idolo non è nulla nel mondo e che non c’è che un Dio solo.

¶ As concerning, therefore, the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.

5 P oiché, sebbene vi siano cosiddetti dèi sia in cielo sia in terra, come infatti ci sono molti dèi e molti signori,

For though there are some that are called gods, whether in heaven or in the earth (as there are many gods and many lords),

6 t uttavia per noi c’è un solo Dio, il Padre, dal quale sono tutte le cose, e noi viviamo per lui, e un solo Signore, Gesù Cristo, mediante il quale sono tutte le cose e mediante il quale anche noi siamo.

but to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

7 M a non in tutti è la conoscenza; anzi, alcuni, abituati finora all’idolo, mangiano di quella carne come se fosse una cosa sacrificata a un idolo; e la loro coscienza, essendo debole, ne è contaminata.

¶ Howbeit there is not in everyone that knowledge, for some with conscience of the idol unto now, eat it as a thing offered unto an idol, and their conscience being weak is defiled.

8 O ra non è un cibo che ci farà graditi a Dio; se non mangiamo, non abbiamo nulla di meno; e se mangiamo non abbiamo nulla di più.

But food does not make us more acceptable unto God; for neither if we eat are we the better, neither if we eat not are we the worse.

9 M a badate che questo vostro diritto non diventi un inciampo per i deboli.

But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours becomes a stumblingblock to those that are weak.

10 P erché se qualcuno vede te, che hai conoscenza, seduto a tavola in un tempio dedicato agli idoli, la sua coscienza, se egli è debole, non sarà tentata di mangiare carni sacrificate agli idoli?

For if anyone sees thee who hast this knowledge sit at food in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols?

11 C osì, per la tua conoscenza, è danneggiato il debole, il fratello per il quale Cristo è morto.

and through thy knowledge the weak brother shall perish, for whom Christ died.

12 O ra, peccando in tal modo contro i fratelli, ferendo la loro coscienza che è debole, voi peccate contro Cristo.

In this manner, therefore, sinning against the brethren and wounding their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

13 P erciò, se un cibo scandalizza mio fratello, non mangerò mai più carne, per non scandalizzare mio fratello.

Therefore, if food makes my brother to fall, I will never eat flesh nor do anything which may cause my brother to fall.
