1 B oaz salì alla porta della città e là si mise seduto. Ed ecco passare colui che aveva il diritto di riscatto e del quale Boaz aveva parlato. E Boaz gli disse: «O tu, tal dei tali, vieni, siediti qua!» Quello s’avvicinò e si mise seduto.

¶ And Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and, behold, the redeemer of whom Boaz spoke came by unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! Come here and sit down. And he came and sat down.

2 B oaz allora prese dieci uomini fra gli anziani della città e disse loro: «Sedetevi qui». E quelli si sedettero.

Then he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, Sit down here. And they sat down.

3 P oi Boaz disse a colui che aveva il diritto di riscatto: «Naomi, che è tornata dalle campagne di Moab, mette in vendita la parte di terra che apparteneva a Elimelec, nostro fratello.

And he said unto the redeemer, Naomi, that is come again out of the field of Moab, sold a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s,

4 H o creduto giusto informartene e dirti: “Acquistala, in presenza di quanti son qui seduti e degli anziani del mio popolo”. Se vuoi far valere il tuo diritto di riscatto, fallo; ma, se non lo vuoi far valere, dimmelo, perché io lo sappia; infatti non c’è nessuno, all’infuori di te, che abbia il diritto di riscatto; e, dopo di te, vengo io». Quegli rispose: «Farò valere il mio diritto».

and I decided to cause thee to know this and tell thee to take it before the inhabitants and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it, but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me that I may know, for there is no one to redeem it besides thee, and I after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.

5 A llora Boaz disse: «Il giorno che acquisterai il campo dalla mano di Naomi, tu lo acquisterai anche da Rut, la Moabita, moglie del defunto, per far rivivere il nome del defunto nella sua eredità».

Then Boaz replied, The day that thou dost receive the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must also receive Ruth, the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

6 C olui che aveva il diritto di riscatto rispose: «Io non posso far valere il mio diritto, perché rovinerei la mia eredità; subentra tu nel mio diritto di riscatto, poiché io non posso avvalermene».

And the redeemer said, I cannot redeem it for myself lest I ruin my own inheritance; redeem thou; I cede my right to you, for I shall not be able to redeem it.

7 C ’era in Israele quest’antica usanza, per rendere valido un contratto di riscatto o di cessione di proprietà: uno si toglieva la scarpa e la dava all’altro; era il modo di testimoniare in Israele.

Now for a long time in Israel there had been this custom concerning redemption or contracts, that for the confirmation of all matters: one plucked off his shoe and gave it to his neighbour, and this was a testimony in Israel.

8 C osì colui che aveva il diritto di riscatto disse a Boaz: «Acquistala per conto tuo», e si tolse la scarpa.

Therefore, the former owner of the right of redemption said unto Boaz, Buy it thyself. So he drew off his shoe.

9 A llora Boaz disse agli anziani e a tutto il popolo: «Voi siete oggi testimoni che io ho acquistato dalle mani di Naomi tutto quello che apparteneva a Elimelec, a Chilion e a Malon,

¶ And Boaz said unto the elders and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi.

10 e che ho pure acquistato Rut, la Moabita, moglie di Malon, perché sia mia moglie, per far rivivere il nome del defunto nella sua eredità, affinché il nome del defunto non si estingua tra i suoi fratelli e alla porta della sua città. Voi ne siete oggi testimoni».

Moreover, I also take Ruth, the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, as my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance that the name of the dead not be cut off from among his brethren and from the gate of his place. Ye shall be witnesses of this today.

11 E tutto il popolo che si trovava alla porta della città e gli anziani risposero: «Ne siamo testimoni. Il Signore conceda che la donna che entra in casa tua sia come Rachele e come Lea, le due donne che fondarono la casa d’Israele. Spiega la tua forza in Efrata, e fatti un nome in Betlemme!

And all the people that were in the gate and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, who built the house of Israel; and be thou a man of valour in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem;

12 P ossa la discendenza che il Signore ti darà da questa giovane rendere la tua casa simile alla casa di Perez, che Tamar partorì a Giuda!»

let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.

13 C osì Boaz prese Rut, che divenne sua moglie. Egli entrò da lei e il Signore le diede la grazia di concepire; e quella partorì un figlio.

¶ So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife, and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son.

14 E le donne dicevano a Naomi: «Benedetto il Signore, il quale non ha permesso che oggi ti mancasse uno con il diritto di riscatto! Il suo nome sia celebrato in Israele!

And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, who has not left thee this day without a redeemer, whose name shall be famous in Israel.

15 E gli consolerà l’anima tua e sarà il sostegno della tua vecchiaia; l’ha partorito tua nuora che ti ama e che vale per te più di sette figli».

And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy soul and a sustainer in thy old age, for thy daughter-in-law, whom thou doth love, who is better to thee than seven sons, has given birth.

16 E Naomi prese il bambino, se lo strinse al seno e gli fece da nutrice. Nascita di Obed; genealogia di Davide

And Naomi took the child and laid it in her bosom and was his nurse.

17 L e vicine gli diedero il nome e dicevano: «È nato un figlio a Naomi!» Lo chiamarono Obed. Egli fu il padre d’Isai, padre di Davide.

And the women, her neighbours, named him, saying, There is a son born to Naomi, and they called his name Obed. This is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 E cco la posterità di Perez: Perez generò Chesron;

Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,

19 C hesron generò Ram; Ram generò Amminadab;

and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,

20 A mminadab generò Nason; Nason generò Salmon;

and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,

21 S almon generò Boaz; Boaz generò Obed;

and Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,

22 O bed generò Isai e Isai generò Davide.

and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
