1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

¶ But Job answered and said,

2 « Porgete bene ascolto alle mie parole, sia questa la consolazione che mi date.

Hear diligently my speech, and let this be instead of your consolations.

3 S opportatemi, lasciate che io parli, e quando avrò parlato tu mi potrai deridere.

Suffer me that I may speak; and after I have spoken, mock on.

4 M i lamento forse di un uomo? E come farei a non perdere la pazienza?

As for me, is my complaint to man? And if so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

5 G uardatemi, stupite, mettetevi la mano sulla bocca.

Look upon me and be astonished and lay your hand upon your mouth.

6 Q uando ci penso, ne sono smarrito e la mia carne è presa da un brivido.

Even I myself, when I remember, I am afraid, and trembling takes hold on my flesh.

7 P erché mai vivono gli empi? Perché arrivano alla vecchiaia e anche crescono di forze?

¶ Why do the wicked live and become old and even increase in riches?

8 L a loro discendenza prospera sotto i loro sguardi intorno ad essi, i loro germogli fioriscono sotto gli occhi loro.

Their seed is with them, established in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes.

9 L a loro casa è in pace, al sicuro da spaventi, la verga di Dio non li colpisce.

Their houses are safe from fear; neither is the rod of God upon them.

10 I l loro toro monta e non sbaglia, la loro vacca figlia senz’abortire.

Their cows conceive, and do not abort; their cows calve and do not cast forth their young.

11 M andano fuori come un gregge i loro piccini, e i loro figli saltano e ballano.

They send forth their little ones like a flock of sheep, and their children dance.

12 C antano al suono del timpano e della cetra, si rallegrano al suono della zampogna.

They jump at the sound of the timbrel and harp and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

13 P assano felici i loro giorni, poi scendono in un attimo nel soggiorno dei morti.

They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol.

14 E ppure dicevano a Dio: “Ritìrati da noi! Noi non ci curiamo di conoscere le tue vie!

Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.

15 C he cos’è l’Onnipotente perché lo serviamo? Che guadagneremo a pregarlo?”

Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?

16 E cco, non hanno essi in mano la loro felicità? (Lungi da me il consiglio degli empi!).

Behold that their good is not in their hands; the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

17 Q uando mai la lampada degli empi si spegne, piomba loro addosso la rovina e Dio, nella sua ira, li retribuisce con castighi?

¶ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out and their destruction comes upon them, and God distributes sorrows upon them in his anger.

18 Q uando mai sono essi come paglia al vento, come pula portata via dall’uragano?

They shall be as stubble before the wind and as chaff taken up by the whirlwind.

19 “ Dio”, mi dite, “tiene in serbo il castigo per i figli dell’empio”. Ma punisca lui stesso! Che lo senta lui,

God shall lay up his violence for their sons; and he will reward him so that he shall know it.

20 c he veda con i propri occhi la sua rovina e beva egli stesso l’ira dell’Onnipotente!

His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

21 C he importa all’empio della sua famiglia dopo di lui, quando il numero dei suoi mesi è ormai compiuto?

For what delight shall he have in his house after him, being cut off in the number of his months?

22 S ’insegnerà forse a Dio la scienza? A lui che giudica quelli di lassù?

Shall he teach God knowledge, seeing he judges those that are high?

23 L ’uno muore in mezzo al suo benessere quand’è pienamente tranquillo e felice,

This one shall die in the full strength of his beauty, being completely at ease and quiet.

24 h a i secchi pieni di latte, e fresco il midollo delle ossa.

His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

25 L ’altro muore con l’amarezza nel cuore, senz’aver mai gustato il bene.

And another dies in the bitterness of his soul, never having eaten with pleasure.

26 E ntrambi giacciono ugualmente nella polvere e i vermi li ricoprono.

They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

27 A h! Li conosco i vostri pensieri, i piani che formate per abbattermi!

¶ Behold, I know your thoughts and the imaginations which ye devise against me.

28 V oi dite: “Dov’è la casa del potente? Dov’è la tenda che ospitava gli empi?”

For ye say, What is of the house of the prince, and what of the tent of the habitation of the wicked?

29 N on avete dunque interrogato quelli che hanno viaggiato? Voi non vorrete negare quello che attestano;

Have ye not asked those that go by the way, and do ye not know their tokens?

30 c he, cioè, il malvagio è risparmiato nel dì della rovina, che nel giorno dell’ira egli sfugge.

That the wicked is reserved for the day of destruction, they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

31 C hi gli rimprovera in faccia la condotta? Chi gli rende quel che ha fatto?

Who shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he has done?

32 E gli è portato alla sepoltura con onore e veglia egli stesso sulla sua tomba.

He shall yet be brought to the grave and shall remain in the tomb.

33 L ievi sono a lui le zolle della valle; dopo, tutta la gente segue le sue orme; e, anche prima, una folla immensa fu come lui.

The clods of the river valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall be drawn after him, as there were innumerable before him.

34 P erché dunque mi offrite consolazioni vane? Delle vostre risposte altro non resta che falsità».

How then do ye comfort me in vain, given that your answers remain as falsehood?
