1 F ratelli miei, la vostra fede nel nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, il Signore della gloria, sia immune da favoritismi.

¶ My brethren, do not have the faith of our Lord Jesus, the glorious Christ, with respect of persons.

2 I nfatti, se nella vostra adunanza entra un uomo con un anello d’oro, vestito splendidamente, e vi entra pure un povero vestito malamente,

For if a man with a gold ring and in precious apparel comes into your synagogue and a poor person in vile raiment also comes in,

3 e voi avete riguardo a quello che veste elegantemente e dite: «Tu, siedi qui al posto d’onore»; e al povero dite: «Tu, stattene là in piedi», o «siedi in terra accanto al mio sgabello»,

and ye have respect to him that wears the precious clothing and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there or sit here under my footstool:

4 n on state forse usando un trattamento diverso e giudicando in base a ragionamenti malvagi?

Are ye not then judging in yourselves and are become judges of evil thoughts?

5 A scoltate, fratelli miei carissimi: Dio non ha forse scelto quelli che sono poveri secondo il mondo perché siano ricchi in fede ed eredi del regno che ha promesso a quelli che lo amano?

Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world that they might be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those that love him?

6 V oi invece avete disprezzato il povero! Non sono forse i ricchi quelli che vi opprimono e vi trascinano davanti ai tribunali?

But ye have despised the poor. Do not the rich oppress you with tyranny and draw you with violence to the courts?

7 N on sono essi quelli che bestemmiano il buon nome che è stato invocato su di voi?

Do they not blaspheme that worthy name by which ye are called?

8 C erto, se adempite la legge regale, come dice la Scrittura: «Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso», fate bene;

¶ If ye truly fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well;

9 m a se avete riguardi personali, voi commettete un peccato e siete condannati dalla legge quali trasgressori.

but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin and are accused of the law as rebels.

10 C hiunque infatti osserva tutta la legge, ma la trasgredisce in un punto solo, si rende colpevole su tutti i punti.

For whosoever shall have kept the whole law, and then offends in one point is made guilty of all.

11 P oiché colui che ha detto: «Non commettere adulterio », ha detto anche: «Non uccidere». Quindi, se tu non commetti adulterio ma uccidi, sei trasgressore della legge.

For he that said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not murder. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou commit murder, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

12 P arlate e agite come persone che devono essere giudicate secondo la legge di libertà.

So speak ye and so do as those that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

13 P erché il giudizio è senza misericordia contro chi non ha usato misericordia. La misericordia invece trionfa sul giudizio. La fede e le opere

For judgment without mercy shall be done unto the one that has shown no mercy; and mercy boasts against judgment.

14 A che serve, fratelli miei, se uno dice di avere fede ma non ha opere? Può la fede salvarlo?

¶ My brethren, What shall it profit though someone says that they have faith and do not have works? Shall this type of faith be able to save them?

15 S e un fratello o una sorella non hanno vestiti e mancano del cibo quotidiano,

If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,

16 e uno di voi dice loro: «Andate in pace, scaldatevi e saziatevi», ma non date loro le cose necessarie al corpo, a che cosa serve?

and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them?

17 C osì è della fede; se non ha opere, è per se stessa morta.

Even so faith, if it does not have works, is dead in and of itself.

18 A nzi, uno piuttosto dirà: «Tu hai la fede, e io ho le opere; mostrami la tua fede senza le opere, e io con le mie opere ti mostrerò la fede».

But someone may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.

19 T u credi che c’è un solo Dio, e fai bene; anche i demòni lo credono e tremano.

Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well; the demons also believe and tremble.

20 I nsensato! Vuoi renderti conto che la fede senza le opere non ha valore ?

But, O vain man, dost thou desire to know that faith without works is dead?

21 A braamo, nostro padre, non fu forse giustificato per le opere quando offrì suo figlio Isacco sull’altare?

Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?

22 T u vedi che la fede agiva insieme alle sue opere e che per le opere la fede fu resa completa;

Dost thou not see how the faith worked together with his works, and the faith was complete by the works?

23 c osì fu adempiuta la Scrittura che dice: «Abraamo credette a Dio, e ciò gli fu messo in conto come giustizia»; e fu chiamato amico di Dio.

And that the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called the Friend of God.

24 V oi vedete che l’uomo è giustificato per opere, e non per fede soltanto.

Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.

25 E così Raab, la prostituta, non fu anche lei giustificata per le opere quando accolse gli inviati e li fece ripartire per un’altra strada?

Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

26 I nfatti, come il corpo senza lo spirito è morto, così anche la fede senza le opere è morta.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
