1 D opo queste cose, sotto il regno di Artaserse, re di Persia, giunse Esdra, figlio di Seraia, figlio di Azaria, figlio di Chilchia,

¶ Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes, king of Persia, Ezra, the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

2 f iglio di Sallum, figlio di Sadoc, figlio di Aitub,

the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

3 f iglio di Amaria, figlio di Azaria, figlio di Meraiot,

the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

4 f iglio di Zeraia, figlio di Uzzi,

the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

5 f iglio di Bucchi, figlio di Abisua, figlio di Fineas, figlio di Eleazar, figlio di Aaronne, il sommo sacerdote.

the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the first priest.

6 Q uesto Esdra veniva da Babilonia. Era uno scriba esperto nella legge di Mosè, data dal Signore, Dio d’Israele. Siccome la mano del Signore, suo Dio, era su di lui, il re gli concesse tutto quello che domandò.

This Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a diligent scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.

7 A lcuni dei figli d’Israele e alcuni dei sacerdoti, dei Leviti, dei cantori, dei portinai e dei Netinei salirono anche loro con lui a Gerusalemme, il settimo anno del re Artaserse.

And there went up some of the sons of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes, the king.

8 E sdra giunse a Gerusalemme il quinto mese, nel settimo anno del re.

And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, in the seventh year of the king.

9 I nfatti aveva fissato la partenza da Babilonia per il primo giorno del primo mese, e arrivò a Gerusalemme il primo giorno del quinto mese, assistito dalla benefica mano del suo Dio;

For upon the first of the first month he began to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.

10 p oiché Esdra si era dedicato con tutto il cuore allo studio e alla pratica della legge del Signore, e a insegnare in Israele le leggi e le prescrizioni divine.

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel his statutes and judgments.

11 E cco il testo della lettera data dal re Artaserse a Esdra, sacerdote e scriba, esperto nei comandamenti e nelle leggi dati dal Signore a Israele:

¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra, the priest, the scribe, a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes over Israel.

12 « Artaserse, re dei re, a Esdra, sacerdote e scriba esperto nella legge del Dio del cielo, eccetera.

Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra, the priest, perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and to Cheenet.

13 I o decreto che, nel mio regno, chiunque del popolo d’Israele, dei suoi sacerdoti e dei Leviti sarà disposto a partire con te per Gerusalemme, vada pure.

By me is given commandment, that any of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm, who desire of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.

14 T u infatti sei mandato dal re e dai suoi sette consiglieri in Giuda e a Gerusalemme per informarti come laggiù sia osservata la legge del tuo Dio, la quale è nelle tue mani,

For thou art sent on behalf of the king and of his seven counsellors, to inquire of Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thy hand,

15 e per portare l’argento e l’oro che il re e i suoi consiglieri hanno volontariamente offerto al Dio d’Israele, la cui dimora è a Gerusalemme,

and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors freely offer unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,

16 e tutto l’argento e l’oro che troverai in tutta la provincia di Babilonia, e i doni volontari fatti dal popolo e dai sacerdoti per la casa del loro Dio a Gerusalemme.

and all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people and of the priests, who offer willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;

17 T u avrai quindi cura di comprare con questo denaro tori, montoni, agnelli e ciò che occorre per le relative oblazioni e libazioni, e li offrirai sull’altare della casa del vostro Dio che è a Gerusalemme.

Therefore, with diligence thou shalt buy with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their presents and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.

18 D ell’argento e dell’oro che avanzeranno farete, tu e i tuoi fratelli, quel che vi sembrerà meglio, conformandovi alla volontà del vostro Dio.

And whatever shall seem good to thee and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.

19 Q uanto agli utensili che ti sono dati per il servizio della casa del tuo Dio, rimettili davanti al Dio di Gerusalemme.

The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, thou shalt restore before the God of Jerusalem.

20 I noltre prenderai dal tesoro della casa reale quello che ti servirà per qualunque altra spesa che dovrai fare per la casa del tuo Dio.

And whatever else shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have need to bestow, bestow it out of the king’s treasure house.

21 I o, il re Artaserse, do ordine a tutti i tesorieri d’oltre il fiume di consegnare senza indugio a Esdra, sacerdote e scriba, esperto nella legge del Dio del cielo, tutto quello che vi chiederà,

And by me, Artaxerxes, the king, is given the commandment to all the treasurers who are on the other side of the river, that whatever Ezra, the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,

22 f ino a cento talenti d’argento, a cento cori di grano, a cento bati di vino, a cento bati d’olio e una quantità illimitata di sale.

unto one hundred talents of silver and to one hundred measures of wheat and to one hundred baths of wine and to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.

23 T utto quello che è comandato dal Dio del cielo sia puntualmente fatto per la casa del Dio del cielo. Perché infatti l’ira di Dio dovrebbe riversarsi sopra il regno, sul re e i suoi figli?

Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be speedily done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?

24 V i facciamo inoltre sapere che non si possono esigere tributi o imposte o pedaggi da nessuno dei sacerdoti, dei Leviti, dei cantori, dei portinai, dei Netinei e dei servi di questa casa di Dio.

Also unto you we cause it to be known, that regarding all of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, and ministers of the house of this God, no one shall be able to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.

25 E tu, Esdra, secondo la saggezza di cui il tuo Dio ti ha dotato, stabilisci dei magistrati e dei giudici che amministrino la giustizia a tutto il popolo d’oltre il fiume, a tutti quelli che conoscono le leggi del tuo Dio; e voi fatele conoscere a chi non le conosce.

And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thy hand, set as judges and governors, who govern all the people that are on the other side of the river, all such as know the laws of thy God, and teach those that do not know them.

26 S enza esitare farete giustizia di chi non osserverà la legge del tuo Dio e la legge del re, e lo punirete con la morte o con l’esilio, con una multa o con il carcere».

And whoever will not do the law of thy God and the law of the king, let them be judged speedily, whether it be unto death or to banishment or to confiscation of goods or to imprisonment.

27 « Benedetto sia il Signore, Dio dei nostri padri, che ha così disposto il cuore del re a onorare la casa del Signore, a Gerusalemme,

¶ Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to honour the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem,

28 e che mi ha procurato la benevolenza del re, dei suoi consiglieri e di tutti i suoi potenti capi! Io, fortificato dalla mano del Signore, del mio Dio, che era su di me, radunai i capi d’Israele perché partissero con me.

and has extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I, comforted according to the hand of the LORD my God upon me, gathered together the principals of Israel to go up with me.
