1 « Quando degli uomini avranno una lite, andranno in giudizio e saranno giudicati. Sarà data ragione a chi è nel giusto e torto a chi è colpevole.

¶ If there is a controversy between persons and they come unto judgment and they are judged, then they shall justify the righteous and condemn the wicked.

2 S e il colpevole avrà meritato di essere frustato, il giudice lo farà gettare a terra e colpire in sua presenza con un numero di frustate proporzionato alla gravità della sua colpa.

And it shall be if the wicked man is worthy to be beaten the judge shall cause him to lie down and to be beaten in his presence, according to his fault, by a certain number.

3 G li farà dare non più di quaranta frustate, per timore che tuo fratello resti disonorato agli occhi tuoi, qualora si oltrepassasse di molto questo numero di colpi.

Forty stripes he may give him and not exceed lest if he should exceed and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should be despised before thee.

4 N on metterai la museruola al bue che trebbia il grano. La discendenza di un fratello defunto

Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treads out the grain.

5 « Se dei fratelli staranno insieme e uno di loro morirà senza lasciare figli, la moglie del defunto non si sposerà fuori, con uno straniero; suo cognato verrà da lei e se la prenderà per moglie, compiendo così verso di lei il suo dovere di cognato;

¶ When brethren dwell together and one of them dies and has no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry outside unto a stranger; her husband’s brother shall go in unto her and take her to him to wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her.

6 e il primogenito che lei partorirà porterà il nome del fratello defunto, affinché questo nome non sia estinto in Israele.

And it shall be that the firstborn which she bears shall be raised up in the name of his brother who is dead that his name be not blotted out of Israel.

7 S e quell’uomo non vuole prendere sua cognata, la cognata salirà alla porta, dagli anziani, e dirà: “Mio cognato rifiuta di far rivivere in Israele il nome di suo fratello; egli non vuole compiere verso di me il suo dovere di cognato”.

And if the man does not desire to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders and say, My husband’s brother refuses to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.

8 A llora gli anziani della sua città lo chiameranno e gli parleranno. Può darsi che egli persista e dica: “Non voglio prenderla”.

Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak unto him, and if he stands and says, I desire not to take her;

9 I n questo caso, sua cognata gli si avvicinerà in presenza degli anziani, gli leverà il calzare dal piede, gli sputerà in faccia e dirà: “Così sarà fatto all’uomo che non vuole ricostruire la casa di suo fratello”.

then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders and loose his shoe from off his foot and spit in his face and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother’s house.

10 L a casa di lui sarà chiamata in Israele “La casa dello scalzo”.

And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that is barefoot.

11 Q uando degli uomini si metteranno a litigare, e la moglie dell’uno si avvicinerà per liberare suo marito dalle mani di quello che lo percuote, stenderà la mano e afferrerà i suoi genitali, tu le mozzerai la mano;

When men strive together one with another and the wife of the one draws near to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smites him and puts forth her hand and takes him by his secret parts;

12 l ’occhio tuo non ne abbia pietà. Pesi e misure

then thou shalt cut off her hand; thine eye shall not pity her.

13 « Non avrai nella tua borsa due pesi, uno grande e uno piccolo.

¶ Thou shalt not have in thy bag different weights, a great and a small.

14 N on avrai in casa due misure, una grande e una piccola.

Thou shalt not have in thy house different measures, a great and a small.

15 T errai pesi esatti e giusti, terrai misure esatte e giuste, affinché i tuoi giorni siano prolungati sulla terra che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà.

But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have, that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.

16 P oiché il Signore, il tuo Dio, detesta chiunque fa quelle cose e commette iniquità. Ordine contro Amalec

For all that do such things and all that do unrighteously are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

17 « Ricòrdati di quel che ti fece Amalec, durante il viaggio, quando uscisti dall’Egitto.

Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way when ye were come forth out of Egypt,

18 E gli ti attaccò per via, piombando da dietro su tutti i deboli che camminavano per ultimi, quando eri già stanco e sfinito e non ebbe alcun timore di Dio.

how he met thee by the way and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary and he did not fear God.

19 Q uando dunque il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti avrà dato pace liberandoti da tutti i tuoi nemici che ti circondano nel paese che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà come eredità perché tu lo possegga, cancellerai la memoria di Amalec sotto al cielo: non te ne scordare!

Therefore it shall be when the LORD thy God has given thee rest from all thine enemies round about in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee for an inheritance to possess it that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.
