1 C osì parla il Signore: «Ecco, io faccio levare contro Babilonia e contro gli abitanti di questo paese, che è il cuore dei miei nemici, un vento distruttore;

¶ Thus hath the LORD said; Behold, I raise up against Babylon and against her inhabitants that rise up against me from the heart, a destroying wind.

2 m ando contro Babilonia degli stranieri che la ventileranno e vuoteranno il suo paese, poiché, nel giorno della calamità, piomberanno su di lei da tutte le parti.

And I will send unto Babylon fanners that shall fan her and shall empty her land; for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.

3 T enda l’arciere il suo arco contro chi tende l’arco e contro chi si erge fieramente nella sua corazza! Non risparmiate i suoi giovani, votate allo sterminio tutto il suo esercito!

I shall say to the archer that bends his bow and unto him that lifts himself up in his brigandine, Spare ye not her young men; utterly destroy all her host.

4 C adano uccisi nel paese dei Caldei, crivellati di ferite per le vie di Babilonia!

Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans and those that are thrust through in her streets.

5 I nfatti Israele e Giuda non sono abbandonati dal loro Dio, il Signore degli eserciti; il paese dei Caldei è pieno di colpe contro il Santo d’Israele».

For Israel and Judah have not been made widows of their God, of the LORD of the hosts, though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.

6 F uggite di mezzo a Babilonia, salvi ognuno la sua vita, guardate di non perire per l’iniquità di lei! Poiché questo è il tempo della vendetta del Signore; egli le dà la sua retribuzione.

Flee out of the midst of Babylon and deliver each one his soul that ye not perish because of her iniquity, for this is the time of the LORD’s vengeance; he will render unto her a recompense.

7 B abilonia era nelle mani del Signore una coppa d’oro, che ubriacava tutta la terra; le nazioni hanno bevuto il suo vino, perciò le nazioni sono divenute deliranti.

Babylon has been a golden cup in the LORD’s hand that made all the earth drunken: the Gentiles have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.

8 A ll’improvviso Babilonia è caduta, è frantumata. Alzate su di lei alti lamenti, prendete del balsamo per il suo dolore; forse guarirà!

Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed; howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.

9 « Noi abbiamo voluto guarire Babilonia, ma essa non è guarita; abbandonatela e andiamocene ognuno al nostro paese, poiché la sua punizione arriva fino al cielo, s’innalza fino alle nuvole.

We applied the medicine to Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go each one into his own land; for her judgment is come unto heaven and is lifted up even to the clouds.

10 I l Signore ha fatto emergere i nostri diritti; venite, raccontiamo in Sion l’opera del Signore nostro Dio».

The LORD has brought our righteousness to light; come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God.

11 A ppuntite le frecce, imbracciate gli scudi! Il Signore ha eccitato lo spirito dei re dei Medi, perché il suo disegno contro Babilonia è di distruggerla; poiché questa è la vendetta del Signore, la vendetta del suo tempio.

Make bright the arrows; gather the shields; the LORD has awakened the spirit of the kings of the Medes; for his thought is against Babylon to destroy her; for it is vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance of his temple.

12 A lzate la bandiera contro le mura di Babilonia! Rinforzate le guardie, mettete le sentinelle, preparate gli agguati! Poiché il Signore ha preso una decisione e già mette in pratica ciò che ha detto contro gli abitanti di Babilonia.

Set up the banner upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes; for the LORD has deliberated and shall put into effect that which he spoke against the inhabitants of Babylon.

13 O tu che abiti in riva alle grandi acque, tu che abbondi di tesori, la tua fine è giunta, il termine delle tue rapine!

O thou that dwellest among many waters, rich in treasures, thine end is come, the measure of thy covetousness.

14 I l Signore degli eserciti l’ha giurato per se stesso: «Sì, certo, io ti riempirò di uomini come di locuste ed essi alzeranno contro di te grida di trionfo».

The LORD of the hosts has sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men as with locusts; and they shall sing the song of the winepress against thee.

15 E gli, con la sua potenza, ha fatto la terra, con la sua saggezza ha stabilito fermamente il mondo; con la sua intelligenza ha disteso i cieli.

He is the one who makes the earth by his power; he upholds the world by his wisdom and extends the heavens by his intelligence;

16 Q uando fa udire la sua voce, c’è un rumore d’acque nel cielo; egli fa salire i vapori dalle estremità della terra, fa guizzare i lampi per la pioggia e sprigiona il vento dai suoi serbatoi.

he who gives with his voice a multitude of waters from heaven, then he causes the clouds to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightnings with the rain and brings forth the wind out of his treasures.

17 O gni uomo allora diventa stupido, privo di conoscenza, ogni orafo ha vergogna delle sue immagini scolpite; perché le sue immagini fuse sono menzogna e non c’è soffio vitale in loro.

Every man has become carnal and is without knowledge; let every founder be ashamed of the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

18 S ono vanità, lavoro d’inganno; nel giorno del castigo periranno.

They are vanity, the work of errors; in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

19 A loro non somiglia Colui che è la parte di Giacobbe; perché egli ha formato tutte le cose, e Israele è la tribù della sua eredità. Il suo nome è: Signore degli eserciti.

The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the Former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance; the LORD of the hosts is his name.

20 « O Babilonia, tu sei stata per me un martello, uno strumento di guerra. Con te ho schiacciato le nazioni, con te ho distrutto i regni;

Thou art my hammer, O weapons of war: for with thee I will break in pieces the Gentiles, and with thee I will destroy kingdoms;

21 c on te ho schiacciato cavalli e cavalieri, con te ho schiacciato i carri e chi vi stava sopra;

and with thee I will break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee I will break in pieces the chariots and their riders;

22 c on te ho schiacciato uomini e donne, con te ho schiacciato vecchi e bambini, con te ho schiacciato giovani e fanciulle;

with thee also I will break in pieces men and women; and with thee I will break in pieces old and young; and with thee I will break in pieces young men and virgins;

23 c on te ho schiacciato i pastori e le loro greggi, con te ho schiacciato i lavoratori e i loro buoi aggiogati, con te ho schiacciato governatori e magistrati.

I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee I will break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee I will break in pieces dukes and princes.

24 M a, sotto i vostri occhi, io renderò a Babilonia e a tutti gli abitanti della Caldea tutto il male che hanno fatto a Sion», dice il Signore.

And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, said the LORD.

25 « Eccomi a te, o montagna di distruzione», dice il Signore; «a te che distruggi tutta la terra! Io stenderò la mia mano su di te, ti rotolerò giù dalle rocce e farò di te una montagna bruciata.

Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, said the LORD, which destroys all the earth; and I will stretch out my hand upon thee and roll thee down from the rocks and will make thee a burnt mountain.

26 D a te non si trarrà più pietra angolare, né pietre da fondamenta; ma tu sarai una desolazione perenne», dice il Signore.

And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, said the LORD.

27 A lzate una bandiera sulla terra, suonate la tromba fra le nazioni, preparate le nazioni contro di lei, chiamate a raccolta contro di lei i regni di Ararat, di Minni e di Aschenaz, costituite contro di lei dei generali, fate avanzare i cavalli come locuste dalle ali ritte!

Set ye up a banner in the land, blow the shofar among the Gentiles, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as raised up locusts.

28 P reparate contro di lei le nazioni, i re di Media, i suoi governatori, tutti i suoi magistrati e tutti i paesi dei suoi domini.

Prepare the nations against her: the kings of Media, the captains thereof, and all the princes thereof, and all the land of their dominion.

29 L a terra trema, è in doglie, perché i disegni del Signore contro Babilonia si effettuano: di ridurre il paese di Babilonia in un deserto senza abitanti.

And the land shall tremble and sorrow for every thought of the LORD is confirmed against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant.

30 I prodi di Babilonia cessano di combattere, se ne stanno nelle loro fortezze; la loro bravura è venuta meno, sono come donne. Le sue abitazioni sono in fiamme, le sbarre delle sue porte sono spezzate.

The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight; they have remained in their holds; their might has failed; they became as women: the enemies have burned her dwellingplaces; they have broken her bars.

31 U n corriere incrocia l’altro, un messaggero incrocia l’altro, per annunciare al re di Babilonia che la sua città è presa da ogni lato,

One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken in all places,

32 c he i guadi sono occupati, che le paludi sono in preda alle fiamme, che gli uomini di guerra sono allibiti.

And the fords were taken, and they have burned the reeds with fire, and the men of war were astounded.

33 P oiché così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: «La figlia di Babilonia è come un’aia al tempo in cui la si trebbia; ancora un poco e verrà per lei il tempo della mietitura».

For thus hath the LORD of the hosts, the God of Israel said: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor; it is now time to thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.

34 « Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, ci ha divorati, ci ha schiacciati, ci ha posti là come un vaso vuoto; ci ha inghiottiti come un dragone, ha riempito il suo ventre con le nostre delizie, ci ha cacciati via.

Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me; he has made me an empty vessel, he has swallowed me up like a dragon; he has filled his belly with my delicates; he has cast me out.

35 L a violenza che mi è fatta e il tormento della mia carne ricadano su Babilonia!», dirà l’abitante di Sion. «Il mio sangue ricada sugli abitanti della Caldea!», dirà Gerusalemme.

The violence against me and my flesh be upon Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and my blood upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say.

36 P erciò così parla il Signore: «Ecco, io difenderò la tua causa e farò la tua vendetta! Io prosciugherò il suo mare, disseccherò la sua sorgente.

Therefore thus hath the LORD said: Behold, I judge thy cause and shall take thy vengeance; and I will dry up her sea and make her flowing waters dry.

37 B abilonia diventerà un mucchio di macerie, un covo di sciacalli, un oggetto di stupore e di scherno, un luogo senza abitanti.

And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and a hissing, without an inhabitant.

38 E ssi ruggiranno assieme come leoni, grideranno come piccoli di leonesse.

They shall roar together like lions; they shall roar as lions’ whelps.

39 Q uando saranno riscaldati, darò loro da bere, li ubriacherò perché stiano allegri e poi si addormentino di un sonno perenne e non si risveglino più», dice il Signore.

In their heat I will place their feasts before them, and I will make them drunken that they may rejoice and sleep an eternal sleep and not wake, said the LORD.

40 « Io li farò scendere al macello come agnelli, come montoni, come capri.

I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats.

41 C ome mai è stata presa Sesac ed è stata conquistata colei che era il vanto di tutta la terra? Come mai Babilonia è diventata una desolazione fra le nazioni?

How is Sheshach a prey! and how is she who was the praise of the whole earth taken! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the Gentiles!

42 I l mare è salito su Babilonia; essa è stata coperta dal tumulto dei suoi flutti.

The sea is come up upon Babylon; she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.

43 L e sue città sono diventate una desolazione, una terra arida, un deserto, un paese dove non abita più nessuno, per dove non passa più nessun figlio d’uomo.

Her cities were devastated, the land dry and desert, a land in which no man dwells, neither shall any son of man pass thereby.

44 I o punirò Bel a Babilonia, gli trarrò di gola ciò che ha trangugiato; le nazioni non affluiranno più a lui; perfino le mura di Babilonia sono cadute.

And I will visit Bel himself in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up; and the Gentiles shall not flow together any more unto him; and the wall of Babylon shall fall.

45 O popolo mio, uscite di mezzo a lei, salvi ciascuno la sua vita davanti all’ardente ira del Signore!

Come out of the midst of her, my people, and save each one his life from the fierce anger of the LORD.

46 I l vostro cuore non si avvilisca, non vi spaventate delle voci che si udranno nel paese, poiché un anno correrà una voce e l’anno seguente correrà un’altra voce; ci sarà nel paese violenza, dominatore contro dominatore.

And lest your heart faint, and ye fear because of the news that shall be heard in the land; in one year shall the news come, and after that in the next year shall come the rumour, and then shall come the violence in the land, and the ruler over him who rules.

47 P erciò ecco, i giorni vengono in cui io farò giustizia delle immagini scolpite di Babilonia: tutto il suo paese sarà coperto di vergogna, tutti i suoi feriti a morte cadranno in mezzo a lei.

Therefore, behold, the days come that I will visit the graven images of Babylon; and her whole land shall be ashamed, and all her dead shall fall in the midst of her.

48 I cieli e la terra, e tutto ciò che è in essi, esulteranno su Babilonia, perché i devastatori piomberanno su di lei dal settentrione», dice il Signore.

Then the heavens and the earth and all that is therein shall sing praises over Babylon; for the destroyers shall come unto her from the north, said the LORD.

49 « Come Babilonia ha fatto cadere i feriti a morte d’Israele, così in Babilonia cadranno i feriti a morte di tutto il paese.

As Babylon has caused the dead of Israel to fall, so because of Babylon the dead of all the earth fell.

50 O voi che siete scampati dalla spada, partite, non vi fermate, ricordatevi, mentre siete lontano, del Signore, e Gerusalemme vi ritorni in cuore!»

Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, do not tarry: remember the LORD for many days, and remember Jerusalem.

51 « Noi eravamo coperti d’infamia all’udire gli insulti, la vergogna ci copriva la faccia, perché gli stranieri erano venuti nel santuario della casa del Signore ».

We are ashamed, because we have heard the reproach; confusion has covered our faces; for strangers are come against the sanctuaries of the LORD’s house.

52 « Perciò ecco, i giorni vengono», dice il Signore, «in cui io farò giustizia delle sue immagini scolpite e in tutto il suo paese gemeranno i feriti a morte.

Therefore, behold, the days come, said the LORD, that I will visit her graven images; and through all her land the wounded unto death shall groan.

53 A nche se Babilonia si elevasse fino al cielo, anche se rendesse inaccessibili i suoi alti baluardi, le verranno da parte mia dei devastatori», dice il Signore.

Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify her strength upon high, yet from me shall destroyers come unto her, said the LORD.

54 « Giunge da Babilonia un grido, la notizia di un gran disastro dalla terra dei Caldei.

The sound of a cry comes from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!

55 I l Signore infatti devasta Babilonia e fa cessare il suo grande rumore; le onde dei devastatori muggono come grandi acque, se ne ode il fracasso,

Because the LORD destroys Babylon and takes out of her the many thunders, her waves shall roar; like many waters shall be the sound of their voice:

56 p erché il devastatore piomba su di lei, su Babilonia; i suoi prodi sono presi, i loro archi spezzati, poiché il Signore è il Dio delle retribuzioni e non manca di rendere ciò che è dovuto.

because the destroyer is come against her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, their bow is broken: for the LORD God of recompenses shall surely requite.

57 I o ubriacherò i suoi capi e i suoi saggi, i suoi governatori, i suoi magistrati, i suoi prodi, ed essi si addormenteranno di un sonno perenne e non si risveglieranno più», dice il Re, che si chiama Signore degli eserciti.

And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men; and they shall sleep an eternal sleep and shall not wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of the hosts.

58 C osì parla il Signore degli eserciti: «Le larghe mura di Babilonia saranno spianate al suolo, le sue alte porte saranno incendiate; così i popoli avranno lavorato per nulla, le nazioni si saranno stancate per il fuoco».

Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly cast down, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and peoples and nations shall labour in vain in the fire to save her, and they shall become weary.

59 O rdine dato dal profeta Geremia a Seraia, figlio di Neria, figlio di Maaseia, quando si recò a Babilonia con Sedechia, re di Giuda, il quarto anno del regno di Sedechia. Seraia era responsabile delle soste.

¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet sent to Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah was the chief steward of the bedchambers.

60 G eremia scrisse in un libro tutto il male che doveva accadere a Babilonia, cioè tutte queste parole che sono scritte riguardo a Babilonia.

So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.

61 G eremia disse a Seraia: «Quando sarai arrivato a Babilonia, avrai cura di leggere tutte queste parole

And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon and shalt see and shalt read all these things;

62 e dirai: “O Signore, tu hai detto di questo luogo che lo avresti distrutto, al punto che non sarebbe stato più abitato né da uomo, né da bestia, e che sarebbe stato ridotto in una desolazione perenne”.

then thou shalt say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that no one shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever.

63 Q uando avrai finito di leggere questo libro, tu vi legherai una pietra, lo getterai in mezzo all’Eufrate

And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates;

64 e dirai: “Così affonderà Babilonia e non si rialzerà più, a causa del male che io faccio venire su di lei; cadrà esausta”». Fin qui le parole di Geremia.

and thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be overcome. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
