1 D epois dessas coisas, durante o reinado de Artaxerxes, rei da Pérsia, vivia um homem chamado Esdras. Era filho de Seraías, filho de Azarias, filho de Hilquias,

¶ Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes, king of Persia, Ezra, the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

2 f ilho de Salum, filho de Zadoque, filho de Aitube,

the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

3 f ilho de Amarias, filho de Azarias, filho de Meraiote,

the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

4 f ilho de Zeraías, filho de Uzi, filho de Buqui,

the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

5 f ilho de Abisua, filho de Finéias, filho de Eleazar, filho do sumo sacerdote Arão.

the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the first priest.

6 E ste Esdras veio da Babilônia. Era um escriba que conhecia muito a Lei de Moisés dada pelo Senhor, o Deus de Israel. O rei lhe concedera tudo o que ele tinha pedido, pois a mão do Senhor, o seu Deus, estava sobre ele.

This Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a diligent scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.

7 A lguns dos israelitas, inclusive sacerdotes, levitas, cantores, porteiros e servidores do templo, também foram para Jerusalém no sétimo ano do reinado de Artaxerxes.

And there went up some of the sons of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes, the king.

8 E sdras chegou a Jerusalém no quinto mês do sétimo ano desse reinado.

And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, in the seventh year of the king.

9 N o primeiro dia do primeiro mês ele saiu da Babilônia e chegou a Jerusalém no primeiro dia do quinto mês, porque a boa mão de seu Deus estava sobre ele.

For upon the first of the first month he began to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.

10 P ois Esdras tinha decidido dedicar-se a estudar a Lei do Senhor e a praticá-la, e a ensinar os seus decretos e mandamentos aos israelitas. A Carta do Rei Artaxerxes a Esdras

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel his statutes and judgments.

11 E sta é uma cópia da carta que o rei Artaxerxes entregou ao sacerdote e escriba Esdras, conhecedor dos mandamentos e decretos do Senhor para Israel:

¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra, the priest, the scribe, a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes over Israel.

12 “ Artaxerxes, rei dos reis, “Ao sacerdote Esdras, escriba da Lei do Deus dos céus: “Paz e prosperidade!

Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra, the priest, perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and to Cheenet.

13 “ Estou decretando que qualquer israelita em meu reino, inclusive dentre os sacerdotes e levitas, que desejar ir a Jerusalém com você, poderá fazê-lo.

By me is given commandment, that any of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm, who desire of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.

14 V ocê está sendo enviado pelo rei e por seus sete conselheiros para fazer uma investigação em Judá e em Jerusalém com respeito à Lei do seu Deus, que está nas suas mãos.

For thou art sent on behalf of the king and of his seven counsellors, to inquire of Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thy hand,

15 A lém disso, você levará a prata e o ouro que o rei e seus conselheiros voluntariamente ofereceram ao Deus de Israel, cuja habitação está em Jerusalém,

and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors freely offer unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,

16 a lém de toda a prata e todo o ouro que você receber da província da Babilônia, como também as ofertas voluntárias do povo e dos sacerdotes para o templo do Deus deles em Jerusalém.

and all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people and of the priests, who offer willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;

17 C om esse dinheiro compre novilhos, carneiros, cordeiros e o que for necessário para as suas ofertas de cereal e de bebida, e sacrifique-os no altar do templo do seu Deus em Jerusalém.

Therefore, with diligence thou shalt buy with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their presents and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.

18 “ Você e seus irmãos poderão fazer o que acharem melhor com o restante da prata e do ouro, de acordo com a vontade do seu Deus.

And whatever shall seem good to thee and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God.

19 E ntregue ao Deus de Jerusalém todos os utensílios que foram confiados a você para o culto no templo de seu Deus.

The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, thou shalt restore before the God of Jerusalem.

20 E todas as demais despesas necessárias com relação ao templo de seu Deus serão pagas pelo tesouro real.

And whatever else shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have need to bestow, bestow it out of the king’s treasure house.

21 “ Agora eu, o rei Artaxerxes, ordeno a todos os tesoureiros do território situado a oeste do Eufrates que forneçam tudo o que lhes solicitar o sacerdote Esdras, escriba da Lei do Deus dos céus,

And by me, Artaxerxes, the king, is given the commandment to all the treasurers who are on the other side of the river, that whatever Ezra, the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,

22 a té três toneladas e meia de prata, cem tonéis de trigo, dez barris de vinho, dez barris de azeite de oliva, e sal à vontade.

unto one hundred talents of silver and to one hundred measures of wheat and to one hundred baths of wine and to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.

23 T udo o que o Deus dos céus tenha prescrito, que se faça com presteza para o templo do Deus dos céus, para que a sua ira não venha contra o império do rei e dos seus descendentes.

Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be speedily done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?

24 S aibam também que vocês não têm autoridade para exigir impostos, tributos ou taxas de nenhum sacerdote, levita, cantor, porteiro, servidor do templo e de nenhum dos que trabalham nesse templo de Deus.

Also unto you we cause it to be known, that regarding all of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, and ministers of the house of this God, no one shall be able to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.

25 “ E você, Esdras, com a sabedoria que o seu Deus lhe deu, nomeie magistrados e juízes para ministrarem a justiça a todo o povo do território situado a oeste do Eufrates, a todos os que conhecem as leis do seu Deus. E aos que não as conhecem você deverá ensiná-las.

And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thy hand, set as judges and governors, who govern all the people that are on the other side of the river, all such as know the laws of thy God, and teach those that do not know them.

26 A quele que não obedecer à lei do Deus de vocês e à lei do rei seja punido com a morte, ou com o exílio, ou com o confisco de bens, ou com a prisão”.

And whoever will not do the law of thy God and the law of the king, let them be judged speedily, whether it be unto death or to banishment or to confiscation of goods or to imprisonment.

27 B endito seja o Senhor, o Deus de nossos antepassados, que pôs no coração do rei o propósito de honrar desta maneira o templo do Senhor em Jerusalém,

¶ Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to honour the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem,

28 e que, por sua bondade, favoreceu-me perante o rei, seus conselheiros e todos os seus altos oficiais. Como a mão do Senhor, o meu Deus, esteve sobre mim, tomei coragem e reuni alguns líderes de Israel para me acompanharem.

and has extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I, comforted according to the hand of the LORD my God upon me, gathered together the principals of Israel to go up with me.
