1 O s discípulos dos profetas disseram a Eliseu: “Como vês, o lugar onde nos reunimos contigo é pequeno demais para nós.

¶ The sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too tight for us.

2 V amos ao rio Jordão onde cada um de nós poderá cortar um tronco para construirmos ali um lugar de reuniões”. Eliseu disse: “Podem ir”.

Let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and each one take a beam from there, and let us make us a place there where we may dwell. And he answered, Go.

3 E ntão um deles perguntou: “Não gostarias de ir com os teus servos?” “Sim”, ele respondeu.

And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy slaves. And he answered, I will go.

4 E foi com eles. Foram ao Jordão e começaram a derrubar árvores.

So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down the wood.

5 Q uando um deles estava cortando um tronco, o ferro do machado caiu na água. E ele gritou: “Ah, meu senhor, era emprestado!”

But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water, and he cried and said, Alas, master! It was borrowed.

6 O homem de Deus perguntou: “Onde caiu?” Quando o homem lhe mostrou o lugar, Eliseu cortou um galho e o jogou ali, fazendo o ferro flutuar,

And the man of God said, Where did it fall? And he showed him the place. Then he cut down a stick and cast it in there and caused the iron to swim.

7 e disse: “Pegue-o”. O homem esticou o braço e o pegou. O Exército Arameu É Ferido de Cegueira

And he said unto him, Take it. And he put out his hand and took it.

8 O ra, o rei da Síria estava em guerra contra Israel. Depois de reunir-se com os seus conselheiros, disse: “Montarei o meu acampamento em tal lugar”.

¶ Then the king of Syria warred against Israel and took counsel with his slaves, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.

9 M as o homem de Deus mandava uma mensagem ao rei de Israel: “Evite passar por tal lugar, pois os arameus estão descendo para lá”.

And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware to not pass through such and such a place, for the Syrians are going there.

10 A ssim, o rei de Israel investigava o lugar indicado pelo homem de Deus. Repetidas vezes Eliseu alertou o rei, que tomava as devidas precauções.

Then the king of Israel sent to the place, which the man of God told him and warned him of and kept himself from there, not once nor twice.

11 I sso enfureceu o rei da Síria, que, convocando seus conselheiros, perguntou-lhes: “Vocês não me apontarão qual dos nossos está do lado do rei de Israel?”

Therefore, the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled over this thing, and he called his slaves and said unto them, Will ye not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?

12 R espondeu um dos conselheiros: “Nenhum de nós, majestade. É Eliseu, o profeta que está em Israel, que revela ao rei de Israel até as palavras que tu falas em teu quarto”.

Then one of his slaves said, None, my lord, O king, but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

13 O rdenou o rei: “Descubram onde ele está, para que eu mande capturá-lo”. Quando lhe informaram que o profeta estava em Dotã,

¶ And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

14 e le enviou para lá uma grande tropa com cavalos e carros de guerra. Eles chegaram de noite e cercaram a cidade.

So he sent horsemen and chariots there and a great host, who came by night and compassed the city about.

15 O servo do homem de Deus levantou-se bem cedo pela manhã e, quando saía, viu que uma tropa com cavalos e carros de guerra havia cercado a cidade. Então ele exclamou: “Ah, meu senhor! O que faremos?”

And when the servant of the man of God was risen early to go forth, behold, a host compassed the city both with horsemen and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! What shall we do?

16 O profeta respondeu: “Não tenha medo. Aqueles que estão conosco são mais numerosos do que eles”.

And he answered, Fear not; for those that are with us are more than those that are with them.

17 E Eliseu orou: “ Senhor, abre os olhos dele para que veja”. Então o Senhor abriu os olhos do rapaz, que olhou e viu as colinas cheias de cavalos e carros de fogo ao redor de Eliseu.

And Elisha prayed and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horsemen and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

18 Q uando os arameus desceram na direção de Eliseu, ele orou ao Senhor: “Fere estes homens de cegueira”. Então ele os feriu de cegueira, conforme Eliseu havia pedido.

And when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD and said, Smite these people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

19 E liseu lhes disse: “Este não é o caminho nem esta é a cidade que procuram. Sigam-me, e eu os levarei ao homem que vocês estão procurando”. E os guiou até a cidade de Samaria.

And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria.

20 A ssim que entraram na cidade, Eliseu disse: “ Senhor, abre os olhos destes homens para que possam ver”. Então o Senhor abriu-lhes os olhos, e eles viram que estavam dentro de Samaria.

And when they came into Samaria, Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

21 Q uando o rei de Israel os viu, perguntou a Eliseu: “Devo matá-los, meu pai? Devo matá-los?”

And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? Shall I smite them?

22 E le respondeu: “Não! O rei costuma matar prisioneiros que captura com a espada e o arco? Ordena que lhes sirvam comida e bebida e deixe que voltem ao seu senhor”.

And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them; would thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and return to their master.

23 E ntão o rei preparou-lhes um grande banquete e, terminando eles de comer e beber, mandou-os de volta para o seu senhor. Assim, as tropas da Síria pararam de invadir o território de Israel. Fome durante o Cerco de Samaria

And he prepared great provision for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

24 A lgum tempo depois, Ben-Hadade, rei da Síria, mobilizou todo o seu exército e cercou Samaria.

¶ And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad, king of Syria, gathered all his host and went up and besieged Samaria.

25 O cerco durou tanto e causou tamanha fome que uma cabeça de jumento chegou a valer oitenta peças de prata, e uma caneca de esterco de pomba, cinco peças de prata.

And there was a great famine in Samaria as they besieged it until an ass’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

26 U m dia, quando o rei de Israel inspecionava os muros da cidade, uma mulher gritou para ele: “Socorro, majestade!”

And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, a woman cried unto him, saying, Save me, my lord, O king.

27 O rei respondeu: “Se o Senhor não a socorrer, como poderei ajudá-la? Acaso há trigo na eira ou vinho no tanque de prensar uvas?”

And he said, If the LORD does not save thee, from where shall I save thee? Out of the threshingfloor, or out of the winepress?

28 C ontudo ele perguntou: “Qual é o problema?” Ela respondeu: “Esta mulher me disse: ‘Vamos comer o seu filho hoje, e amanhã comeremos o meu’.

And the king said unto her, What ails thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.

29 E ntão cozinhamos o meu filho e o comemos. No dia seguinte eu disse a ela que era a vez de comermos o seu filho, mas ela o havia escondido”.

So we boiled my son and ate him. And I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son that we may eat him. But she has hid her son.

30 Q uando o rei ouviu as palavras da mulher, rasgou as próprias vestes. Como estava sobre os muros, o povo viu que ele estava usando pano de saco por baixo, junto ao corpo.

And when the king heard the words of the woman, he rent his clothes; and he passed by like this upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

31 E ele disse: “Deus me castigue com todo o rigor, se a cabeça de Eliseu, filho de Safate, continuar hoje sobre seus ombros!”

Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat, shall remain upon him today.

32 O ra, Eliseu estava sentado em sua casa, reunido com as autoridades de Israel. O rei havia mandado um mensageiro à sua frente, mas, antes que ele chegasse, Eliseu disse às autoridades: “Aquele assassino mandou alguém para cortar-me a cabeça? Quando o mensageiro chegar, fechem a porta e mantenham-na trancada. Vocês não estão ouvindo os passos do seu senhor que vem atrás dele?”

And Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man unto him. But before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door; is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?

33 E nquanto ainda lhes falava, o mensageiro chegou. Na mesma hora o rei disse: “Esta desgraça vem do Senhor. Por que devo ainda ter esperança no Senhor ?”

And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him; and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; for what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
