1 N a época dos juízes houve fome na terra. Um homem de Belém de Judá, com a mulher e os dois filhos, foi viver por algum tempo nas terras de Moabe.

¶ Now it came to pass in the days when the judges governed that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem of Judah went to sojourn in the fields of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

2 O homem chamava-se Elimeleque, sua mulher Noemi e seus dois filhos Malom e Quiliom. Eram efrateus de Belém de Judá. Chegaram a Moabe, e lá ficaram.

And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem of Judah. And they came into the fields of Moab and continued there.

3 M orreu Elimeleque, marido de Noemi, e ela ficou sozinha, com seus dois filhos.

And Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons,

4 E les se casaram com mulheres moabitas, uma chamada Orfa e a outra Rute. Depois de terem morado lá por quase dez anos,

who took wives for themselves of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years.

5 m orreram também Malom e Quiliom, e Noemi ficou sozinha, sem os seus dois filhos e sem o seu marido. Noemi e Rute Voltam para Belém

And Mahlon and Chilion both died also; and the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

6 Q uando Noemi soube em Moabe que o Senhor viera em auxílio do seu povo, dando-lhe alimento, decidiu voltar com suas duas noras para a sua terra.

¶ Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, to return from the fields of Moab, for she had heard in the field of Moab how the LORD had visited his people to give them bread.

7 A ssim, ela, com as duas noras, partiu do lugar onde tinha morado. Enquanto voltavam para a terra de Judá,

Therefore she went forth out of the place where she had been and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

8 d isse-lhes Noemi: “Vão! Retornem para a casa de suas mães! Que o Senhor seja leal com vocês, como vocês foram leais com os falecidos e comigo.

And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to thy mother’s house; the LORD deal with you in mercy as ye have dealt with the dead and with me.

9 O Senhor conceda que cada uma de vocês encontre segurança no lar doutro marido”. Então deu-lhes beijos de despedida. Mas elas começaram a chorar alto

The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice and wept.

10 e lhe disseram: “Não! Voltaremos com você para junto de seu povo!”

And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

11 D isse, porém, Noemi: “Voltem, minhas filhas! Por que viriam comigo? Poderia eu ainda ter filhos, que viessem a ser seus maridos?

And Naomi replied, Go back, my daughters; why must ye go with me? Do I have more sons in my womb that they may be your husbands?

12 V oltem, minhas filhas! Vão! Estou velha demais para ter outro marido. E mesmo que eu pensasse que ainda há esperança para mim — ainda que eu me casasse esta noite e depois desse à luz filhos,

Turn, my daughters, and go back, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I should say, I have hope, if I should have a husband tonight and should also bear sons,

13 i riam vocês esperar até que eles crescessem? Ficariam sem se casar à espera deles? De jeito nenhum, minhas filhas! Para mim é mais amargo do que para vocês, pois a mão do Senhor voltou-se contra mim!”

should ye tarry for them until they are grown? Should ye stay without husbands because of them? No, my daughters, for I have greater bitterness than you because the hand of the LORD has come out against me.

14 E las, então, começaram a chorar alto de novo. Depois Orfa deu um beijo de despedida em sua sogra, mas Rute ficou com ela.

And they lifted up their voice and wept again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth cleaved unto her.

15 E ntão Noemi a aconselhou: “Veja, sua concunhada está voltando para o seu povo e para o seu deus. Volte com ela!”

And she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; return thou after thy sister-in-law.

16 R ute, porém, respondeu: “Não insistas comigo que te deixe e que não mais te acompanhe. Aonde fores irei, onde ficares ficarei! O teu povo será o meu povo e o teu Deus será o meu Deus!

And Ruth said, Do not intreat me to leave thee or to return from following after thee, for wherever thou goest, I will go; and wherever thou shalt lodge, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people and thy God my God.

17 O nde morreres morrerei, e ali serei sepultada. Que o Senhor me castigue com todo o rigor, se outra coisa que não a morte me separar de ti!”

Where thou diest, I will die, and there will I be buried; let the LORD do so unto me and let him give unto me that only death shall part thee and me.

18 Q uando Noemi viu que Rute estava de fato decidida a acompanhá-la, não insistiu mais.

When she saw that she was courageous to go with her, then she left off speaking to her.

19 P rosseguiram, pois, as duas até Belém. Ali chegando, todo o povoado ficou alvoroçado por causa delas. “Será que é Noemi?”, perguntavam as mulheres.

¶ So the two walked until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, entering into Bethlehem, that all the city was moved because of them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

20 M as ela respondeu: “Não me chamem Noemi, melhor que me chamem de Mara, pois o Todo-poderoso tornou minha vida muito amarga!

And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

21 D e mãos cheias eu parti, mas de mãos vazias o Senhor me trouxe de volta. Por que me chamam Noemi? O Senhor colocou-se contra mim! O Todo-poderoso me trouxe desgraça!”

I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?

22 F oi assim que Noemi voltou das terras de Moabe, com sua nora Rute, a moabita. Elas chegaram a Belém no início da colheita da cevada.

So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the fields of Moab, and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
