1 F iii proorocilor au zis lui Elisei:,, Iată că locul unde locuim noi cu tine este prea strîmt pentru noi.

¶ The sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too tight for us.

2 H aidem pînă la Iordan; ca să luăm deacolo fiecare cîteo bîrnă, şi să ne facem acolo un loc de locuit.`` Elisei a răspuns:,, Duceţi-vă.``

Let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and each one take a beam from there, and let us make us a place there where we may dwell. And he answered, Go.

3 Ş i unul din ei a zis:,, Fii bun şi vino cu slujitorii tăi.`` El a răspuns:,, Voi merge!``

And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy slaves. And he answered, I will go.

4 A plecat deci cu ei. Ajungînd la Iordan, au tăiat lemne.

So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down the wood.

5 Ş i pe cînd tăia unul din ei o bîrnă, a căzut ferul dela secure în apă. El a strigat:,, Ah! domnul meu, era împrumutat!``

But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water, and he cried and said, Alas, master! It was borrowed.

6 O mul lui Dumnezeu a zis:,, Unde a căzut?`` Şi i -a arătat locul. Atunci Elisei a tăiat o bucată de lemn, a aruncat -o în locul acela, şi ferul dela secure a plutit pe apă.

And the man of God said, Where did it fall? And he showed him the place. Then he cut down a stick and cast it in there and caused the iron to swim.

7 A poi a zis:,, Ridică -l!`` Şi a întins mîna, şi l -a luat.

And he said unto him, Take it. And he put out his hand and took it.

8 Î mpăratul Siriei era în război cu Israel. Şi, într'un sfat pe care l -a ţinut cu slujitorii săi, a zis:,, Tabăra mea va fi în cutare loc.``

¶ Then the king of Syria warred against Israel and took counsel with his slaves, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.

9 D ar omul lui Dumnezeu a trimis să spună împăratului lui Israel:,, Fereşte-te să treci pe lîngă locul acela, căci acolo sînt ascunşi Sirienii.``

And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware to not pass through such and such a place, for the Syrians are going there.

10 Ş i împăratul lui Israel a trimes nişte oameni să stea la pîndă spre locul pe care i -l spusese şi despre care îl înştiinţase omul lui Dumnezeu. Aceasta s'a întîmplat nu odată, nici de două ori.

Then the king of Israel sent to the place, which the man of God told him and warned him of and kept himself from there, not once nor twice.

11 Î mpăratului Siriei i s'a turburat inima. A chemat pe slujitorii săi, şi le -a zis:,, Nu voiţi să-mi spuneţi care din noi este pentru împăratul lui Israel?``

Therefore, the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled over this thing, and he called his slaves and said unto them, Will ye not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?

12 U nul din slujitorii săi a răspuns:,, Nimeni, împărate, domnul meu; dar proorocul Elisei, care este în Israel, spune împăratului lui Israel cuvintele pe cari le rosteşti în odaia ta de culcare.``

Then one of his slaves said, None, my lord, O king, but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

13 Ş i împăratul a zis:,, Duceţi-vă şi vedeţi unde este, ca să trimet să -l prindă.`` Au venit şi i-au spus:,, Iată că este la Dotan.``

¶ And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

14 A trimes acolo cai, cară şi o oaste puternică. Au ajuns noaptea, şi au înconjurat cetatea.

So he sent horsemen and chariots there and a great host, who came by night and compassed the city about.

15 S lujitorul omului lui Dumnezeu s'a sculat disdedimineaţă şi a ieşit. Şi iată că o oaste înconjura cetatea, cu cai şi cară. Şi slujitorul a zis omului lui Dumnezeu:,, Ah! domnul meu, cum vom face?``

And when the servant of the man of God was risen early to go forth, behold, a host compassed the city both with horsemen and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! What shall we do?

16 E l a răspuns:,, Nu te teme, căci mai mulţi sînt cei cu noi decît cei cu ei.``

And he answered, Fear not; for those that are with us are more than those that are with them.

17 E lisei s'a rugat, şi a zis:,, Doamne, deschide -i ochii să vadă.`` Şi Domnul a deschis ochii slujitorului, care a văzut muntele plin de cai şi de cară de foc împrejurul lui Elisei.

And Elisha prayed and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horsemen and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

18 S irienii s'au pogorît la Elisei. El a făcut atunci următoarea rugăciune către Domnul:,, Loveşte, rogu-Te, pe poporul acesta cu orbire.`` Şi Domnul i -a lovit cu orbire, după cuvîntul lui Elisei.

And when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD and said, Smite these people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

19 E lisei le -a zis:,, Nu este aceasta calea, şi nu este aceasta cetatea; veniţi după mine, şi vă voi duce la omul pe care -l căutaţi.`` Şi i -a dus la Samaria.

And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria.

20 C înd au intrat în Samaria, Elisei a zis:,, Doamne, deschide ochii oamenilor acestora, să vadă!`` Şi Domnul le -a deschis ochii, şi au văzut că erau în mijlocul Samariei.

And when they came into Samaria, Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

21 Î mpăratul lui Israel, văzîndu -i, a zis lui Elisei:,, Să -i măcelăresc, să -i măcelăresc, părinte?``

And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? Shall I smite them?

22 S ă nu -i măcelăreşti``, a răspuns Elisei.,, Obicinuieşti tu oare să măcelăreşti pe aceia pe cari îi iei prinşi cu sabia şi cu arcul tău? Dă-le pîne şi apă, ca să mănînce şi să bea; apoi să se ducă la stăpînul lor.``

And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them; would thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and return to their master.

23 Î mpăratul lui Israel le -a dat un prînz mare, şi ei au mîncat şi au băut; apoi le -a dat drumul, şi au plecat la stăpînul lor. Şi oştile Sirienilor nu s'au mai întors pe ţinutul lui Israel.

And he prepared great provision for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

24 D upă aceea, Ben-Haded, împăratul Siriei, strîngîndu-şi toată oştirea, s'a suit şi a împresurat Samaria.

¶ And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad, king of Syria, gathered all his host and went up and besieged Samaria.

25 Î n Samaria a fost o mare foamete, şi atît de mult au strîmtorat -o încît un cap de măgar preţuia optzeci de sicli de argint, şi un sfert de cab de găinaţ de porumbel cinci sicli de argint.

And there was a great famine in Samaria as they besieged it until an ass’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

26 Ş i pe cînd trecea împăratul pe zid, o femeie i -a strigat:,, Scapă-mă, împărate, domnul meu!``

And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, a woman cried unto him, saying, Save me, my lord, O king.

27 E l a răspuns:,, Dacă nu te scapă Domnul, cu ce să te scap eu? Cu venitul ariei sau al teascului?``

And he said, If the LORD does not save thee, from where shall I save thee? Out of the threshingfloor, or out of the winepress?

28 Ş i împăratul i -a zis:,, Ce ai?`` Ea a răspuns:,, Femeia aceea mi -a zis:, Dă-mi pe fiul tău să -l mîncăm astăzi, şi mîne vom mînca pe fiul meu.`

And the king said unto her, What ails thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.

29 N oi am fiert pe fiul meu, şi l-am mîncat. Şi în ziua următoare i-am zis:, Dă pe fiul tău să -l mîncăm.` Dar ea a ascuns pe fiul ei.``

So we boiled my son and ate him. And I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son that we may eat him. But she has hid her son.

30 C um a auzit împăratul cuvintele acestei femei, şi -a rupt hainele, cînd stătea pe zid. Şi poporul a văzut că pe dinlăuntru avea un sac de păr pe trup.

And when the king heard the words of the woman, he rent his clothes; and he passed by like this upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

31 Î mpăratul a zis:,, Să mă pedepsească Dumnezeu cu toată asprimea, dacă va rămînea astăzi capul lui Elisei, fiul lui Şafat, pe trupul lui!``

Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat, shall remain upon him today.

32 E lisei şedea în casă, şi bătrînii şedeau lîngă el. Împăratul a trimes pe cineva înainte. Dar înainte ca să ajungă solul, Elisei a zis bătrînilor:,, Vedeţi că acest fiu de ucigaş trimete pe cineva să-mi ia capul? Ascultaţi! Cînd va veni solul, închideţi uşa, şi opriţi -l la uşă; nu se aude oare sunetul paşilor stăpînului său în urma lui?``

And Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man unto him. But before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door; is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?

33 P e cînd le vorbea el încă, solul se şi pogorîse la el, şi împăratul a zis:,, Iată, răul acesta vine dela Domnul; ce mai am de nădăjduit dela Domnul?``

And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him; and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; for what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
