1 ( Către mai marele cîntăreţilor. Un psalm al fiilor lui Core.) Ascultaţi lucrul acesta, toate popoarele, luaţi aminte, toţi locuitorii lumii:

¶ Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:

2 m ici şi mari, bogaţi şi săraci!

Both low and high, rich and poor, together.

3 G ura mea va vorbi cuvinte înţelepte, şi inima mea are gînduri pline de judecată.

My mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart intelligence.

4 E u îmi plec urechea la pildele care îmi sînt însuflate, îmi încep cîntarea în sunetul arfei.

I will incline mine ear to a parable; I will declare my enigma upon the harp.

5 P entru ce să mă tem în zilele nenorocirii, cînd mă înconjoară nelegiuirea protivnicilor mei?

Why should I fear in the days of adversity when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

6 E i se încred în avuţiile lor, şi se fălesc cu bogăţia lor cea mare.

¶ Those that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

7 D ar nu pot să se răscumpere unul pe altul, nici să dea lui Dumnezeu preţul răscumpărării.

none of them can by any means ransom his brother, nor give God an atonement for him;

8 R ăscumpărarea sufletului lor este aşa de scumpă, că nu se va face niciodată.

(for the redemption of their soul is of great price, and they shall never pay it)

9 N u vor trăi pe vecie, nu pot să nu vadă mormîntul.

that he should still live for ever and not see corruption.

10 D a, îl vor vedea: căci înţelepţii mor, nebunul şi prostul deopotrivă pier, şi lasă altora avuţiile lor.

For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others.

11 E i îşi închipuiesc că vecinice le vor fi casele, că locuinţele lor vor dăinui din veac în veac, ei, cari dau numele lor la ţări întregi.

Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

12 D ar omul pus în cinste nu dăinuieşte, ci este ca dobitoacele cari se taie.

Nevertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off.

13 I ată ce soartă au ei, cei plini de atîta încredere, precum şi cei ce îi urmează, cărora le plac cuvintele lor. -

This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

14 S înt duşi ca o turmă în locuinţa morţilor, îi paşte moartea, şi în curînd oamenii fără prihană îi calcă în picioare: li se duce frumuseţa, şi locuinţa morţilor le este locaşul.

Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling.

15 D ar mie Dumnezeu îmi va scăpa sufletul din locuinţa morţilor, căci mă va lua supt ocrotirea Lui. -

¶ Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah.

16 N u te teme cînd se îmbogăţeşte cineva, şi cînd i se înmulţesc vistieriile casei;

Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

17 c ăci nu ia nimic cu el cînd moare: vistieriile lui nu se pogoară după el.

for in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him.

18 S ă se tot creadă omul fericit în viaţă, să se tot laude cu bucuriile pe cari şi le face,

Though while he lives, his life shall be blessed: and men will praise thee when thou art prosperous.

19 c ăci tot în locuinţa părinţilor săi va merge, şi nu va mai vedea lumina niciodată.

He shall enter into the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light forever.

20 O mul pus în cinste, şi fără pricepere, este ca dobitoacele pe cari le tai.

Man that is in honour that does not understand is like the beasts that are cut off.
