1 I srael era o vie mănoasă, care făcea multe roade. Cu cît roadele sale erau mai multe, cu atît mai multe altare a zidit; cu cît îi propăşea ţara, cu atît înfrumuseţa stîlpii idoleşti.

¶ Israel is an empty vine. Shall he bring forth fruit unto himself? According to the multiplication of his fruit he has multiplied altars; according to the goodness of his land they have bettered their statues.

2 I nima lor este împărţită: de aceea vor fi pedepsiţi. Domnul le va surpa altarele, le va nimici stîlpii idoleşti.

Their heart has wandered; now they shall be found guilty: he shall break down their altars, he shall destroy their statues.

3 Ş i curînd vor zice:,, N'avem un adevărat împărat, căci nu ne-am temut de Domnul; şi împăratul, pe care -l avem, ce ar putea face el pentru noi?``

For now they shall say, We have no king, because we did not fear the LORD; what then should a king do to us?

4 E i rostesc vorbe deşerte, jurăminte mincinoase, cînd încheie un legămînt: de aceea, pedeapsa va încolţi ca o buruiană otrăvitoare din brazdele cîmpiei!

They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment shall spring up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

5 L ocuitorii Samariei, se vor uimi de viţeii din Bet-Aven; poporul va jăli pe idol, şi preoţii lui vor tremura pentru el, pentru slava lui, care va pieri din mijlocul lor.

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn because of the calf, and the religious persons thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, which shall be made to vanish away.

6 D a, el însuş va fi dus în Asiria, ca dar împăratului Iareb. Ruşinea va cuprinde pe Efraim, şi lui Israel îi va fi ruşine de planurile sale.

It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to King Jareb: Ephraim shall be ashamed, and Israel shall be confused at his own counsel.

7 S 'a dus Samaria şi împăratul ei, ca o ţăpligă pe faţa apelor.

As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the surface of the waters.

8 Î nălţimile din Bet-Aven, unde a păcătuit Israel, vor fi nimicite; spini şi mărăcini vor creşte pe altarele lor. Şi vor zice munţilor:,, Acoperiţi-ne!`` Şi dealurilor:,, Cădeţi peste noi!``

And the altars of Aven shall be destroyed, the sin of Israel: the thorn and the thistle shall grow upon their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.

9 D in zilele Ghibei ai păcătuit, Israele! Acolo au stătut ei, ca războiul făcut împotriva celor răi să nu -i apuce la Ghibea.

¶ O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah; there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the sons of iniquity did not overtake them.

10 Î i voi pedepsi cînd voi vrea, şi se vor strînge popoare împotriva lor, cînd îi voi pedepsi pentru îndoita lor nelegiuire!

And I shall chastise them as I desire; and the peoples shall gather themselves over them, when they shall be bound in their two furrows.

11 E fraim este o mînzată învăţată la jug, căreia îi place să treiere grîul, şi i-am cruţat gîtul său cel frumos; dar acum voi înjuga pe Efraim, Iuda va ara şi Iacov îi va grăpa.

Ephraim is a heifer that is taught and loves to tread out the wheat; but I shall pass over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to draw; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.

12 S ămănaţi potrivit cu neprihănirea şi veţi secera potrivit cu îndurarea. Desţeleniţi-vă un ogor nou! Este vremea să căutaţi pe Domnul, ca să vină şi să vă ploaie mîntuire.

Sow yourselves unto righteousness, reap yourselves unto mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is the time to seek the LORD until he comes and teaches you righteousness.

13 A ţi arat răul, aţi secerat nelegiuirea, şi aţi mîncat rodul minciunii. Căci te-ai încrezut în carăle tale de luptă, în numărul oamenilor tăi viteji.

Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye shall eat the fruit of lies because thou didst trust in thy way and in the multitude of thy mighty men.

14 D eaceea se va stîrni o zarvă împotriva poporului tău, şi toate cetăţuile tale vor fi nimicite, cum a nimicit în luptă Şalman-Bet-Arbel, cînd mama a fost zdrobită împreună cu copiii ei.

Therefore, in thy peoples a tumult shall arise, and all thy fortresses shall be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her sons.

15 I ată ce vă va aduce Betel, din pricina răutăţii voastre peste măsură de mare. În revărsatul zorilor, se va isprăvi cu împăratul lui Israel!

So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness; in the morning the king of Israel shall utterly be cut off.
