1 A cum, strînge-ţi rîndurile în cetate, ceata Sionului, căci sîntem împresuraţi! Judecătorul lui Israel este lovit cu nuiaua pe obraz!

¶ Now thou shalt be besieged by armies, O daughter of the army: he shall lay siege against us; they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

2 Ş i tu, Betleeme Efrata, măcar că eşti prea mic între cetăţile de căpetenie ale lui Iuda, totuş din tine Îmi va ieşi Cel ce va stăpîni peste Israel, şi a cărui obîrşie se suie pînă în vremuri străvechi, pînă în zilele veciniciei.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be Lord in Israel; and his goings forth are from the beginning, from the days of the ages.

3 D e aceea îi va lăsa, pînă la vremea cînd va naşte cea care are să nască, şi rămăşiţa fraţilor Săi se va întoarce la copiii lui Israel.

Therefore he will give them up until the time that she who travails has brought forth; then the remnant of his brethren shall return with the sons of Israel.

4 E l se va înfăţişa, şi va cîrmui cu puterea Domnului, şi cu măreţia Numelui Domnului, Dumnezeului Său: vor locui liniştiţi, căci El va fi proslăvit pînă la marginile pămîntului.

And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide; for now he shall be great unto the ends of the earth.

5 E l va fi pacea noastră! Cînd va veni Asirianul în ţara noastră, şi va pătrunde în palatele noastre, vom ridica împotriva lui şapte păstori şi opt căpetenii ale poporului.

And he shall be our peace when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then we shall raise against him seven shepherds and eight principal men.

6 E i vor pustii ţara Asiriei cu sabia, şi ţara lui Nimrod cu sabia scoasă din teacă. Ne va izbăvi astfel de Asirian, cînd va veni în ţara nostră, şi va pătrunde în ţinutul nostru.

And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the blade, and the land of Nimrod with their swords; and he shall deliver us from the Assyrian when he comes against our land and when he treads within our borders.

7 R ămăşiţa lui Iacov va fi în mijlocul multor popoare, ca o rouă care vine dela Domnul, ca ploaia măruntă pe iarbă care nu se bizuie pe nimeni, şi nu atîrnă de copiii oamenilor.

¶ And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples as the dew of the LORD, as the rains upon the grass, which did not expect a man, nor did they expect the sons of men.

8 R ămăşiţa lui Iacov va fi între neamuri, în mijlocul multor popoare, ca un leu între fiarele pădurii, ca un pui de leu între turmele de oi: care, cînd trece, calcă în picioare şi sfîşie, şi nimeni nu poate scăpa pe altul.

And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many peoples as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, who, if he goes through and treads down and tears in pieces, there are none that can escape.

9 Ţ i se va ridica mîna peste protivnicii tăi, şi toţi vrăjmaşii tăi vor fi nimiciţi!

Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine enemies, and all thine adversaries shall be cut off.

10 z iua aceea, zice Domnul, îţi voi nimici cu desăvîrşire caii din mijlocul tău, şi-ţi voi sfărîma carăle;

And it shall come to pass in that day, said the LORD, that I will cause thy horses to be killed out of the midst of thee, and I will cause thy chariots to be destroyed:

11 v oi nimici cu desăvîrşire cetăţile din ţara ta, şi-ţi voi surpa toate cetăţuile.

and I will cause all the cities of thy land to be destroyed, and I will cause all thy fortresses to be destroyed:

12 V oi nimici cu desăvîrşire descîntecele din mijlocul tău, şi nu vei mai avea vrăjitori;

and I will cause the witchcrafts to be destroyed by thy hand; and no more soothsayers shall be found in thee:

13 v oi nimici cu desăvîrşire idolii tăi şi stîlpii tăi idoleşti din mijlocul tău, şi nu te vei mai închina la lucrarea mînilor tale;

and I will cause thy graven images and thy images to be destroyed out of the midst of thee; and never again shalt thou worship the work of thine hands.

14 v oi nimici cu desăvîrşire din mijlocul tău Astarteele tale, şi-ţi voi dărîma idolii.

And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee; so will I destroy thy cities.

15 Î mi voi răzbuna cu mînie, cu urgie, pe neamurile, cari n'au vrut s'asculte.``

And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury in the Gentiles who have not heard.
