1 A vraam a plecat de acolo în ţara de meazăzi, s'a aşezat între Cades şi Şur, şi a locuit ca străin în Gherar.

¶ And Abraham journeyed from there toward the land of the Negev and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur and sojourned in Gerar.

2 A vraam zicea despre Sara, nevastă-sa:,, Este sora-mea!`` S'a temut să spună că este nevastă-sa, ca să nu -l omoare oamenii din cetate din pricina ei. Abimelec, împăratul Gherarei, a trimes şi a luat pe Sara.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

3 A tunci Dumnezeu S'a arătat noaptea în vis lui Abimelec, şi i -a zis:,, Iată, ai să mori din pricina femeii, pe care ai luat -o, căci este nevasta unui bărbat.``

¶ But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, Behold, thou art a dead man, for the woman whom thou hast taken, for she is a man’s wife.

4 A bimelec, care nu se apropiase de ea, a răspuns:,, Doamne, vei omorî Tu oare chiar şi un neam nevinovat?

But Abimelech had not come near her, and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous person?

5 N u mi -a spus el că este soră-sa? Şi n'a zis ea însăş că el este frate-său? Eu am lucrat cu inimă curată şi cu mîni nevinovate.``

Did he not say unto me, She is my sister? And she, even she herself said, He is my brother; in the simplicity of my heart and cleanness of my hands I have done this.

6 D umnezeu i -a zis în vis:,,Ştiu şi Eu că ai lucrat cu inimă curată: deaceea te-am şi ferit să păcătuieşti împotriva Mea. Iată de ce n'am îngăduit să te atingi de ea.

And God said unto him in a dream, Yes, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me; therefore I did not allow thee to touch her.

7 A cum, dă omului nevasta înapoi; căci el este prooroc, se va ruga pentru tine, şi vei trăi. Dar, dacă n'o dai înapoi, să ştii că vei muri negreşit, tu şi tot ce -i al tău.``

Now therefore restore the man his wife, for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live. And if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou and all that are thine.

8 A bimelec s'a sculat disdedimineaţă, a chemat pe toţi slujitorii săi, şi le -a spus tot ce se întîmplase. Şi oamenii aceia au fost cuprinşi de o mare spaimă.

¶ Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his slaves and told all these things in their ears; and the men feared greatly.

9 A bimelec a chemat şi pe Avraam şi i -a zis:,, Ce ne-ai făcut? Şi cu ce am păcătuit eu împotriva ta, de ai făcut să vină peste mine şi peste împărăţia mea un păcat atît de mare? Ai făcut faţă de mine lucruri cari nu trebuiau nicidecum făcute.``

Then Abimelech called Abraham and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us and in what have I sinned against thee that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom such a great sin? Thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

10 Ş i Abimelec a zis lui Avraam:,, Ce ai văzut de ai făcut lucrul acesta?``

And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What didst thou see that thou hast done this thing?

11 A vraam a răspuns:,,Îmi ziceam că, fără îndoială, nu -i nici o frică de Dumnezeu în ţara aceasta, şi că au să mă omoare din pricina nevestei mele.

And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.

12 D ealtfel este adevărat că este sora mea, fiica tatălui meu; numai că nu -i fiica mamei mele; şi a ajuns să-mi fie nevastă.

And yet indeed, she is also my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

13 C înd m'a scos Dumnezeu din casa tatălui meu, am zis Sarei:, Iată hatîrul pe care ai să mi -l faci: în toate locurile unde vom merge, spune despre mine că sînt fratele tău.``

And it came to pass when God caused me to wander from my father’s house that I said unto her, This is the mercy which thou shalt show unto me: at every place where we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

14 A bimelec a luat oi şi boi, robi şi roabe, şi le -a dat lui Avraam; şi i -a dat înapoi şi pe Sara, nevastă-sa.

¶ Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen and menslaves and womenslaves and gave them unto Abraham and restored him Sarah his wife.

15 A bimelec a zis:,, Iată, ţara mea este înaintea ta; locuieşte unde-ţi va plăcea.``

And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee; dwell where it pleases thee.

16 Ş i Sarei i -a zis:,, Iată, dau fratelui tău o mie de arginţi; aceasta să-ţi fie o dovadă de cinste, faţă de toţi cei ce sînt cu tine, aşa că înaintea tuturor vei fi fără vină.``

And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that were with thee and with everyone: thus she was reproved.

17 A vraam s'a rugat lui Dumnezeu, şi Dumnezeu a însănătoşat pe Abimelec, pe nevasta şi roabele lui, aşa că au putut să nască.

So Abraham prayed unto God; and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants; and they bore children.

18 F iindcă Domnul încuiase pîntecele tuturor femeilor din casa lui Abimelec, din pricina Sarei, nevasta lui Avraam.

For the LORD had completely closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
