1 A cum dar, Iov, ascultă cuvîntările mele, ia aminte la toate cuvintele mele!

¶ Therefore, Job, hear now my reasons, and hearken to all my words.

2 I ată, deschid gura, şi mi se mişcă limba în cerul gurii.

Behold, now I shall open my mouth, my tongue shall speak in my mouth.

3 C u curăţie de inimă voi vorbi, buzele mele vor spune adevărul curat:

My reasons declare the uprightness of my heart; and my lips shall utter pure knowledge.

4 D uhul lui Dumnezeu m'a făcut, şi suflarea Celui Atotputernic îmi dă viaţă.

The Spirit of God made me, and the breath of the Almighty gave me life.

5 D acă poţi, răspunde-mi, apără-ţi pricina, fii gata!

If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.

6 Î naintea lui Dumnezeu eu sînt semenul tău, şi eu ca şi tine am fost făcut din noroi.

Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s stead; I also am formed out of the clay.

7 A stfel frica de mine nu te va turbura, şi greutatea mea nu te va copleşi.

Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

8 D ar tu ai spus în auzul meu, şi am auzit sunetul cuvintelor tale:

¶ Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

9 S înt curat, sînt fără păcat, sînt fără prihană, nu este fărădelege în mine.

I am clean without rebellion, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

10 Ş i Dumnezeu caută pricină de ură împotriva mea, mă socoteşte vrăjmaş al Lui;

Behold, God sought occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy,

11 î mi pune picioarele în butuci, îmi pîndeşte toate mişcările.`

he put my feet in the stocks, he guards all my paths.

12 Î ţi voi răspunde că aici n'ai dreptate, căci Dumnezeu este mai mare decît omul.

Behold, in this thou art not just; I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.

13 V rei dar să te cerţi cu El, pentrucă nu dă socoteală fiecăruia de faptele Lui?

Why dost thou strive against him? For he will not answer all of thy words.

14 D umnezeu vorbeşte însă, cînd într'un fel, cînd într'altul. dar omul nu ia seama.

¶ Nevertheless, in one or two manners God speaks to the one who does not see.

15 E l vorbeşte prin visuri, prin vedenii de noapte, cînd oamenii sînt cufundaţi într'un somn adînc, cînd dorm în patul lor.

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

16 A tunci El le dă înştiinţări, şi le întipăreşte învăţăturile Lui,

then he opens the ears of men and seals their instruction,

17 c a să abată pe om de la rău, şi să -l ferească de mîndrie,

that he may withdraw the man from his own work and cover the man from pride.

18 c a să -i păzească sufletul de groapă şi viaţa de loviturile săbiei.

Thus he keeps back his soul from the pit and his life from perishing by the sword.

19 Ş i prin durere este mustrat omul în culcuşul lui, cînd o luptă necurmată îi frămîntă oasele.

¶ He is chastened also upon his bed with strong pain in all his bones,

20 A tunci îi este greaţă de pîne, chiar şi de bucatele cele mai alese.

so that his life abhors bread and his soul dainty food.

21 C arnea i se prăpădeşte şi piere, oasele cari nu i se vedeau rămîn goale;

His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.

22 s ufletul i se apropie de groapă, şi viaţa de vestitorii morţii.

His soul shall draw near to the grave, and his life to those that would bury him.

23 D ar dacă se găseşte un înger mijlocitor pentru el, unul din miile acelea, cari vestesc omului calea pe care trebuie s'o urmeze,

If there is a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show unto man his uprightness;

24 D umnezeu Se îndură de el şi zice îngerului:, Izbăveşte -l, ca să nu se pogoare în groapă; am găsit un preţ de răscumpărare pentru el!`

to tell him that God had mercy on him, that he delivered him from going down to the pit; that he found a ransom;

25 Ş i atunci carnea lui se face mai fragedă ca în copilărie, se întoarce la zilele tinereţei lui.

his flesh shall become more tender than a child’s; and he shall return to the days of his youth.

26 S e roagă lui Dumnezeu, şi Dumnezeu îi este binevoitor, îl lasă să -I vadă Faţa cu bucurie, şi -i dă înapoi nevinovăţia.

He shall pray unto God, and he will love him; and he shall see his face with shouts of joy; for he will render unto the man the recompense of his righteousness.

27 A tunci el cîntă înaintea oamenilor, şi zice:, Am păcătuit, am călcat dreptatea, şi n'am fost pedepsit după faptele mele;

He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and it did not profit me;

28 D umnezeu mi -a izbăvit sufletul ca să nu intre în groapă, şi viaţa mea vede lumina!`

God will ransom his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

29 I ată, acestea le face Dumnezeu, de două ori, de trei ori, omului,

¶ Behold, God does all these things two and three times with man,

30 c a să -l ridice din groapă, ca să -l lumineze cu lumina celor vii.

to turn back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.

31 I a aminte, Iov, şi ascultă-mă! Taci, şi voi vorbi!

Hear me, O Job, hearken unto me; be silent, and I will speak.

32 D acă ai ceva de spus, răspunde-mi! Vorbeşte, căci aş vrea să-ţi dau dreptate.

If thou hast anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee.

33 D acă n'ai nimic de zis, ascultă-mă! Taci, şi te voi învăţa înţelepciunea.``

If not, hearken unto me; be silent, and I shall teach thee wisdom.
