1 A u venit şi au spus lui Ioab:,, Iată că împăratul plînge şi se jăleşte din pricina lui Absalom.``

¶ And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.

2 Ş i în ziua aceea, biruinţa s'a prefăcut în jale pentru tot poporul, căci în ziua aceea, poporul auzea zicîndu-se:,,Împăratul este mîhnit din pricina fiului său.``

And that day the salvation was turned into mourning for all the people, for the people heard it said that day how the king was grieved for his son.

3 Î n aceeaş zi, poporul a intrat în cetate pe furiş, ca nişte oameni ruşinaţi că au fugit din luptă.

And the people entered by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

4 Î mpăratul îşi acoperise faţa, şi striga în gura mare:,, Fiul meu Absalom! Absalom, fiul meu, fiul meu.``

But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

5 I oab a intrat în odaia unde era împăratul, şi a zis:,, Tu acoperi azi de ruşine faţa tuturor slujitorilor tăi, cari au scăpat azi viaţa ta, a fiilor tăi şi a fetelor tale, a nevestelor tale şi a ţiitoarelor tale.

And Joab entering into the house of the king, said unto him, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy slaves, who this day have saved thy life and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters and the lives of thy wives and the lives of thy concubines,

6 T u iubeşti pe ceice te urăsc, şi urăşti pe ceice te iubesc, căci arăţi azi că pentru tine nu sînt nici căpetenii nici slujitori; şi văd acum că, dacă ar trăi Absalom şi noi toţi am fi murit în ziua aceasta, lucrul acesta ţi-ar fi plăcut.

by loving those who hate thee and hating thy friends. For thou hast declared this day that thou dost not regard thy princes nor thy slaves. For this day I perceive that if Absalom had lived and we had all died today, then this would be right in thine eyes.

7 S coală-te dar, ieşi şi vorbeşte după inima slujitorilor tăi! Căci jur pe Domnul că, dacă nu ieşi să te arăţi, nu va rămînea un om cu tine în noaptea aceasta; şi aceasta va fi o nenorocire mai rea pentru tine decît toate nenorocirile cari ţi s'au întîmplat din tinereţă pînă acum.``

Now, therefore, arise, go forth and speak unto the heart of thy slaves, for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, not one of them will abide with thee tonight and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that has come upon thee from thy youth until now.

8 A tunci împăratul s'a sculat, şi a şezut la poartă. Au spus tot poporului:,, Iată că împăratul stă la poartă.`` Şi tot poporul a venit înaintea împăratului.

Then the king arose and sat in the gate. And it was declared unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king sits in the gate. And all the people came before the king, but Israel had fled every man to his tent.

9 Ş i în toate seminţiile lui Israel, tot poporul se certa, zicînd:,,Împăratul ne -a izbăvit din mîna vrăjmaşilor noştri, el ne -a scăpat din mîna Filistenilor; şi acum a trebuit să fugă din ţară dinaintea lui Absalom.

¶ And all the people were in contention throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines, and now he has fled out of the land for Absalom.

10 Ş i Absalom, pe care -l unsesem să domnească peste noi, a murit în bătălie: de ce nu puneţi o vorbă pentru întoarcerea împăratului?``

And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now, therefore, why are ye silent regarding bringing the king back?

11 L a rîndul său, împăratul David a trimes să spună preoţilor Ţadoc şi Abiatar:,, Vorbiţi bătrînilor lui Iuda, şi spuneţi-le:, Pentruce aţi fi voi cei din urmă pentru întoarcerea împăratului în casa lui?` -Căci ce se spunea în tot Israelul ajunsese pînă la împărat. -

And King David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar, the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why shall ye be the last to bring the king back to his house? Seeing that the word of all Israel has come to the king, to return him to his house.

12 V oi sînteţi fraţii mei, sînteţi os din oasele mele şi carne din carnea mea; pentruce aţi fi voi cei din urmă pentru aducerea împăratului înapoi?

Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh; why then are ye the last to bring back the king?

13 Ş i lui Amasa spuneţi -i aşa:, Nu eşti tu oare os din oasele mele şi carne din carnea mea? Să mă pedepsească Dumnezeu cu toată asprimea, dacă nu vei fi înaintea mea pentru totdeauna căpetenia oştirii în locul lui Ioab!``

Likewise say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone and of my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the place of Joab.

14 D avid a înmuiat inima tuturor celor din Iuda, de parcă ar fi fost un singur om; şi au trimes să spună împăratului:,,Întoarce-te, tu şi toţi slujitorii tăi.``

And he inclined the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man, so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou and all thy slaves.

15 Î mpăratul s'a întors, şi a ajuns pînă la Iordan. Şi Iuda s'a dus la Ghilgal, ca să iasă înaintea împăratului, şi să -l facă să treacă Iordanul.

So the king returned and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over the Jordan.

16 Ş imei, fiul lui Ghera, Beniamitul, care era din Bahurim, s'a grăbit să se pogoare cu cei din Iuda înaintea împăratului David.

¶ And Shimei, the son of Gera, son of Jemini, who was of Bahurim, hastened and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David.

17 A vea cu el o mie de oameni din Beniamin, şi pe Ţiba, mai marele casei lui Saul, şi pe cei cincisprezece fii şi pe cei douăzeci de robi ai lui Ţiba. Au trecut Iordanul în faţa împăratului.

And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him; likewise Ziba, the slave of the house of Saul and his fifteen sons and his twenty slaves with him, who went over the Jordan before the king.

18 L untrea, pusă la îndemîna împăratului, tocmai pornise ca să -i treacă şi casa dincolo; şi în clipa cînd era să treacă împăratul Iordarnul, Şimei, fiul lui Ghera, s'a închinat înaintea lui.

Then the ferry boat went over to carry over the king’s household and to do what he desired. Then Shimei, the son of Gera, fell down before the king, as he was passing the Jordan,

19 Ş i a zis împăratului:,, Să nu ţină seamă domnul meu de nelegiuirea mea, să uite că robul tău l -a ocărît în ziua cînd împăratul, domnul meu, ieşea din Ierusalim, şi să nu ţină seamă... împăratul de lucrul acesta!

And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither retain the memory of the wickedness that thy slave did the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should guard it in his heart.

20 C ăci robul tău mărturiseşte că a păcătuit. Şi iată, vin astăzi, cel dintîi din toată casa lui Iosif, înaintea împăratului, domnul meu.``

For I, thy slave, know that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

21 A tunci Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei, a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis:,, Nu trebuie oare să moară Şimei pentrucă a blestemat pe unsul Domnului?``

But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?

22 D ar David a zis:,, Ce am eu cu voi, fiii Ţeruiei, şi pentruce vă arătaţi astăzi protivnicii mei? Astăzi să se omoare oare vreun om în Israel? Nu ştiu eu că împărăţesc azi peste Israel?``

Then David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? Shall anyone be put to death today in Israel? Do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?

23 Ş i împăratul a zis lui Şimei:,, Nu vei muri!`` Împăratul i -a jurat că nu -l va omorî.

And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king swore unto him.

24 M efiboşet, fiul lui Saul, s'a pogorît şi el înaintea împăratului. Nu-şi îngrijise nici picioarele, nici barba, nici nu-şi spălase hainele, din ziua cînd plecase împăratul pînă în ziua cînd se întorcea în pace.

¶ Mephibosheth, the son of Saul, also came down to meet the king and had neither washed his feet nor trimmed his beard nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

25 C înd s'a dus înaintea împăratului la Ierusalim, împăratul i -a zis:,, Pentruce n'ai venit cu mine, Mefiboşet?``

And after he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said unto him, Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth?

26 Ş i el a răspuns:,,Împărate, domnul meu, slujitorul meu m'a înşelat, căci robul tău, care este olog, zisese:, Voi pune şaua pe măgar, voi încăleca pe el, şi voi merge cu împăratul.`

And he answered, My lord, O king, my slave deceived me, for thy slave said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride upon it and go to the king because thy slave is lame.

27 Ş i el a înegrit pe robul tău la domnul meu împăratul. Dar domnul meu împăratul este ca un înger al lui Dumnezeu. Fă ce vei crede.

And he has slandered thy slave unto my lord the king, but my lord the king is as an angel of God; do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

28 C ăci toţi cei din casa tatălui meu au fost nişte oameni vrednici de moarte înaintea împăratului domnul meu; şi totuş, tu ai pus pe robul tău în rîndul celor ce mănîncă la masă cu tine. Ce drept mai pot avea eu, şi ce am să cer eu împăratului?``

For all of my father’s house were worthy of death before my lord the king; yet thou didst set thy slave among those that eat at thy own table. What righteousness, therefore, have I yet to cry any more unto the king?

29 Î mpăratul i -a zis:,, Ce mai vorbeşti atîta? Am spus:, Tu şi Ţiba, veţi împărţi pămînturile.``

And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more words? I have determined, Thou and Ziba divide the land.

30 Ş i Mefiboşet a zis împăratului:,, Să ia chiar totul, căci împăratul domnul meu se întoarce în pace acasă.``

And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Let him even take it all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.

31 B arzilai, Galaaditul, s'a pogorît din Roghelim, şi a trecut Iordanul împreună cu împăratul, ca să -l petreacă pînă dincolo de Iordan.

¶ Barzillai, the Gileadite, also came down from Rogelim and went over the Jordan with the king to conduct him over the Jordan.

32 B arzilai era foarte bătrîn, în vîrstă de optzeci de ani. El îngrijise de împărat în timpul şederii lui la Mahanaim, căci era un om foarte bogat.

Now Barzillai was a very aged man, of eighty years, who had provided the king with sustenance while he was at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.

33 Î mpăratul a zis lui Barzilai:,, Vino cu mine, şi te voi hrăni la mine în Ierusalim.``

And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.

34 D ar Barzilai a răspuns împăratului:,, Cîţi ani voi mai trăi, ca să mă sui cu împăratul la Ierusalim?

And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

35 E u sînt astăzi în vîrstă de optzeci de ani. Pot eu să mai cunosc ce este bun şi ce este rău? Poate robul tău să mai aibă vreun gust pentru ce mănîncă şi bea? Pot eu să mai aud glasul cîntăreţilor şi cîntăreţelor? Şi pentru ce să mai fie robul tău o povară pentru domnul meu, împăratul?

I am this day eighty years old, and shall I tell the difference between the good and the bad? Shall thy slave enjoy what I eat or what I drink? Shall I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should thy slave be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

36 R obul tău va merge puţin dincolo de Iordan cu împăratul. Dealtfel, pentru ce mi-ar face împăratul această binefacere?

Thy slave will go a little way over the Jordan with the king, and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

37 S ă se întoarcă robul tău, şi să mor în cetatea mea, lîngă mormîntul tatălui meu şi mamei mele! Dar iată că robul tău Chimham va trece cu împăratul, domnul meu; fă ce vei crede pentru el.``

Let thy slave, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in my own city and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy slave Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king, and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.

38 Î mpăratul a zis:,, Chimham să treacă împreună cu mine, şi voi face pentru el ce vei vrea; tot ce vei dori dela mine, îţi voi da!``

And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do with him that which shall seem good unto thee, and whatever thou shalt ask of me, that will I do for thee.

39 D upă ce tot poporul a trecut Iordanul şi după ce l -a trecut şi împăratul, împăratul a sărutat pe Barzilai, şi l -a binecuvîntat. Şi Barzilai s'a întors acasă.

And all the people went over the Jordan. And when the king had also come over, the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned unto his own place.

40 Î mpăratul s'a îndreptat spre Ghilgal, însoţit de Chimham. Tot poporul lui Iuda şi jumătate din poporul lui Israel petrecuse pe împărat dincolo de Iordan.

¶ Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.

41 D ar toţi bărbaţii lui Israel au venit la împărat, şi i-au zis:,, Pentruce te-au furat fraţii noştri, bărbaţii lui Iuda, şi au trecut pe împărat peste Iordan, împreună cu casa lui, şi cu toţi oamenii lui David?``

And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah, stolen thee away and have brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him, over the Jordan?

42 T oţi bărbaţii lui Iuda au răspuns bărbaţilor lui Israel:,, Fiindcă împăratul ne este rudă; şi ce aţi găsit aici, ca să vă mîniaţi? Am trăit noi pe cheltuiala împăratului? Ne -a făcut el daruri?``

And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us. Why then are ye angry for this matter? Have we eaten anything at the king’s cost? Or has he given us any gift?

43 Ş i bărbaţii lui Israel au răspuns bărbaţilor lui Iuda:,,Împăratul este de zece ori mai mult al nostru, şi chiar la David avem mai mult drept decît voi. Pentruce ne-aţi nesocotit? N'am fost noi cei dintîi cari am spus să se întoarcă împăratul nostru?`` Şi bărbaţii lui Iuda au vorbit cu mai multă asprime decît bărbaţii lui Israel.

Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye; why then did ye not take us into account? Did we not speak first about bringing back our king? But in the end words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
