1 N u te făli cu ziua de mîne, căci nu ştii ce poate aduce o zi. -

¶ Boast not thyself of tomorrow for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

2 S ă te laude altul, nu gura ta, un străin, nu buzele tale.

¶ Let another man praise thee and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

3 P iatra este grea, şi nisipul este greu, dar supărarea pe care o pricinuieşte nebunul este mai grea de cît amîndouă. -

¶ A stone is heavy and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.

4 F uria este fără milă şi mînia năvalnică, dar cine poate sta împotriva geloziei? -

Wrath is cruel, and anger is impetuous, but who is able to stand before envy?

5 M ai bine o mustrare pe faţă de cît o prietenie ascunsă. -

¶ Open rebuke is better than secret love.

6 R ănile făcute de un prieten dovedesc credincioşia lui, dar sărutările unui vrăjmaş sînt mincinoase. -

Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

7 S ătulul calcă în picioare fagurul de miere, dar pentru cel flămînd toate amărăciunile sînt dulci. -

¶ The full soul loathes a honeycomb, but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

8 C a pasărea plecată din cuibul ei, aşa este omul plecat din locul său.

¶ As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man that wanders from his place.

9 C um înveseleşte untdelemnul şi tămîia inima, aşa de dulci sînt sfaturile pline de dragoste ale unui prieten. -

¶ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, so does the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.

10 N u părăsi pe prietenul tău şi pe prietenul tatălui tău, dar nu intra în casa fratelui tău în ziua necazului tău: mai bine un vecin aproape de cît un frate departe. -

Do not forsake thine own friend and thy father’s friend, neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity, for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

11 F iule, fii înţelept, şi înveseleşte-mi inima, şi atunci voi putea răspunde celui ce mă batjocoreşte. -

¶ My son, be wise and make my heart glad that I may answer him that reproaches me.

12 O mul chibzuit vede răul şi se ascunde; dar proştii merg spre el şi sînt pedepsiţi. -

¶ A prudent man foresees the evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are hurt by it.

13 I a -i haina, căci s'a pus chezaş pentru altul, ia -l zălog în locul unei străine. -

¶ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger and take a pledge of him that is surety for a strange woman.

14 B inecuvîntarea aproapelui cu glas tare dis de dimineaţă, este privită ca un blestem. -

¶ He that blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

15 O straşină, care picură necurmat într'o zi de ploaie, şi o nevastă gîlcevitoare sînt tot una.

¶ A continual dripping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

16 C ine o opreşte, parcă opreşte vîntul, şi parcă ţine untdelemnul în mîna dreaptă. -

Whosoever hides her hides the wind, because the oil in his right hand cries out.

17 D upă cum ferul ascute ferul, tot aşa şi omul aţîţă mînia altui om. -

¶ Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

18 C ine îngrijeşte de un smochin va mînca din rodul lui, şi cine-şi păzeşte stăpînul va fi preţuit. -

¶ Whosoever keeps the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof, so he that waits on his master shall be honoured.

19 C um răspunde în apă faţa la faţă, aşa răspunde inima omului inimii omului. -

¶ As in water face corresponds to face, so the heart of man to man.

20 D upă cum locuinţa morţilor şi adîncul nu se pot sătura, tot aşa nici ochii omului nu se pot sătura. -

¶ Sheol and hell are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

21 C e este tigaia pentru lămurirea argintului şi cuptorul pentru lămurirea aurului: aceea este bunul nume pentru un om. -

¶ As the fining pot tries the silver and the furnace the gold; so the man is tried by the mouth of whoever praises him.

22 P e nebun chiar dacă l-ai pisa cu pisălogul în piuă, în mijlocul grăunţelor, nebunia tot n'ar ieşi din el. -

¶ Though thou should bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet his foolishness will not depart from him.

23 Î ngrijeşte bine de oile tale, şi ia seama la turmele tale.

¶ Be thou diligent to know the countenance of thy sheep, and put thy heart into thy herds.

24 C ăci nici o bogăţie nu ţine vecinic, şi nici cununa nu rămîne pe vecie. -

For riches are not for ever, and does the crown endure to every generation?

25 D upăce se ridică fînul, se arată verdeaţa nouă, şi ierburile de pe munţi sînt strînse. -

The tender grass shows itself, and the hay appears, and the herbs of the mountains are reaped.

26 M ieii sînt pentru îmbrăcăminte, şi ţapii pentru plata ogorului;

The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are for the price of the field.

27 l aptele caprelor ţi-ajunge pentru hrana ta, a casei tale, şi pentru întreţinerea slujnicelor tale.

And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance of thy maidens.
