1 V răjmaşii lui Iuda şi Beniamin au auzit că fiii robiei zidesc un Templu Domnului, Dumnezeului lui Israel.

¶ Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the sons of the captivity built the temple unto the LORD God of Israel,

2 A u venit la Zorobabel şi la capii de familii, şi le-au zis:,, Să zidim şi noi cu voi; căci, şi noi chemăm ca şi voi pe Dumnezeul vostru, şi -I aducem jertfe din vremea lui Esar-Hadon, împăratul Asiriei, care ne -a adus aici.``

then they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the fathers and said unto them, Let us build with you, for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon, king of Assur, who brought us up here.

3 D ar Zorobabel, Iosua, şi ceilalţi capi ai familiilor lui Israel, le-au răspuns:,, Nu se cuvine să zidiţi împreună cu noi Casa Dumnezeului nostru; ci noi singuri o vom zidi Domnului, Dumnezeului lui Israel, cum ne -a poruncit împăratul Cir, împăratul Perşilor.``

But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we alone will build unto the LORD God of Israel as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.

4 A tunci oamenii ţării au muiat inima poporului lui Iuda; l-au înfricoşat ca să -l împedece să zidească,

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah and troubled them in building

5 ş i au mituit cu preţ de argint pe sfetnici ca să -i zădărnicească lucrarea. Aşa a fost tot timpul vieţii lui Cir, împăratul Perşilor, pînă la domnia lui Dariu, împăratul Perşilor.

and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their counsel, all the days of Cyrus, king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

6 S upt domnia lui Asuerus, la începutul domniei lui, au scris o pîră împotriva locuitorilor din Iuda şi din Ierusalim.

¶ And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote accusations against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 Ş i pe vremea lui Artaxerxe, Bişlam, Mitredat, Tabeel, şi ceilalţi tovarăşi de slujbă ai lor, au scris lui Artaxerxe, împăratul Perşilor. Scrisoarea a fost scrisă cu slove aramaice şi tălmăcită în limba aramaică.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes, king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

8 D regătorul Rehum şi logofătul Şimşai au scris împăratului Artaxerxe scrisoarea următoare la Ierusalim.

Rehum, the chancellor, and Shimshai, the scribe, wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes, the king, in this sort:

9 D regătorul Rehum, logofătul Şimşai, şi ceilalţi tovarăşi de slujbă ai lor, cei din Din, din Arfarsatac, din Tarpel, din Afaras, din Erec, din Babilon, din Susa, din Deha, din Elam,

Then wrote Rehum, the chancellor, and Shimshai, the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

10 ş i celelalte popoare pe cari le -a mutat marele şi vestitul Osnapar şi le -a aşezat în cetatea Samariei, şi în celelalte locuri de dincoace de Rîu, şi aşa mai departe.

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar (Sennacherib) brought over and set in the cities of Samaria and the rest that are on the other side of the river, and of Cheenet.

11 I ată cuprinsul scrisorii pe care au trimes -o împăratului Artaxerxe:,, Robii tăi, oamenii de dincoace de Rîu, şi aşa mai departe...

This is the copy of the letter that they sent: Unto Artaxerxes, the king: Thy servants, the men of the other side of the river, and of Cheenet.

12 S ă ştie împăratul că Iudeii plecaţi dela tine şi veniţi printre noi la Ierusalim zidesc din nou cetatea aceea răzvrătită şi rea, îi ridică zidurile şi -i dreg temeliile.

Be it known unto the king that the Jews who came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have founded the walls thereof and joined the foundations.

13 S ă ştie dar împăratul că, dacă se va zidi cetatea aceasta şi i se vor ridica zidurile, nu vor mai plăti nici bir, nici dare, nici drept de trecere, şi vistieria împărătească va suferi din pricina aceasta.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city is rebuilt, and the walls founded, they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so the revenue of the kings shall be reduced.

14 Ş i, fiindcă noi mîncăm sarea curţii domneşti şi nu ne şade bine să vedem pe împărat păgubit, trimitem împăratului aceste ştiri.

Now because we are salted with the salt of the palace, and it is not just unto us to see the king’s dishonour; therefore, we have sent to make this known unto the king,

15 S ă se facă cercetări în cartea cronicilor părinţilor tăi; şi vei găsi şi vei vedea în cartea cronicilor că cetatea aceasta este o cetate răzvrătită, vătămătoare împăraţilor şi ţinuturilor, şi că s'au dedat la răscoală încă din vremuri străbune. De aceea a fost nimicită cetatea aceasta.

that search may be made in the book of the records of our fathers; so shalt thou find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that from old time they form rebellions in the midst of her, for which cause this city was destroyed.

16 F acem cunoscut împăratului că dacă va fi zidită din nou cetatea aceasta, şi dacă i se vor ridica zidurile, prin chiar faptul acesta nu vei mai avea stăpînire dincoace de Rîu.``

We notify the king that if this city is built again, and its walls founded, the portion on the other side of the river shall no longer be yours.

17 I ată răspunsul trimes de împărat dregătorului Rehum, logofătului Şimşai, şi celorlalţi tovarăşi ai lui de slujbă, cari locuiau la Samaria şi în alte locuri de cealaltă parte a Rîului.,, Sănătate, şi aşa mai departe.

¶ The king sent this answer unto Rehum, the chancellor, and to Shimshai, the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria and to the rest of those of the other side of the river and to Cheenet.

18 S crisoarea pe care ne-aţi trimes -o a fost cetită întocmai înaintea mea.

The letter which you sent unto us has been plainly read before me.

19 A m dat poruncă să se facă cercetări; şi s'a găsit că din vremuri vechi cetatea aceasta s'a răsculat împotriva împăraţilor, şi s'a dedat la răscoală şi la răzvrătire.

And I commanded, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made in her

20 A u fost la Ierusalim împăraţi puternici, stăpîni peste toată ţara de dincolo de Rîu, şi cărora li se plătea bir, dare, şi drept de trecere pe drum.

and that there have been mighty kings in Jerusalem, who have ruled over all that is beyond the river, and that toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

21 C a urmare, porunciţi să înceteze lucrările oamenilor acelora, şi să nu se mai zidească cetatea aceasta pînă ce nu vor avea o învoire din partea mea.

Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease and that this city not be built until another commandment shall be given from me.

22 V edeţi să nu vă abateţi dela porunca aceasta, ca să nu crească răul acela spre paguba împăraţilor.``

Take heed now that ye not fail to do this; why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 Î ndată ce s'a citit cuprinsul scrisorii împăratului Artaxerxe înaintea lui Rehum, înaintea logofătului Şimşai, şi înaintea tovarăşilor lor de slujbă, s'au dus în grabă la Ierusalim la Iudei, şi i-au oprit cu silă şi cu putere dela lucrările lor.

Now when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai, the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews and made them to cease by force and power.

24 A tunci s'a oprit lucrarea Casei lui Dumnezeu la Ierusalim, şi a fost oprită pînă în anul al doilea al domniei lui Dariu, împăratul Perşilor.

Then the work of the house of God which was at Jerusalem ceased. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.
