1 K hi các thù nghịch của Giu-đa và Bên-gia-min hay rằng những người đã bị bắt làm phu tù được về xây cất đền thờ cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên,

¶ Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the sons of the captivity built the temple unto the LORD God of Israel,

2 b èn đi đến Xô-rô-ba-bên và các trưởng tộc mà nói rằng: Chúng tôi muốn đồng xây cất với các ngươi, vì chúng tôi tìm cầu Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, cũng như anh em, và chúng tôi đã dâng tế lễ cho Ngài từ đời Ê-sa-Ha-đôn, vua A-si-ri, đem chúng tôi lên đây.

then they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the fathers and said unto them, Let us build with you, for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon, king of Assur, who brought us up here.

3 N hưng Xô-rô-ba-bên, Giê-sua, và các trưởng tộc khác của Y-sơ-ra-ên, đáp với chúng rằng: Các ngươi chẳng được phần chung với chúng ta đặng xây cất một đền thờ cho Đức Chúa Trời của chúng ta; song chúng ta, chỉ một mình chúng ta, sẽ cất một đền cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, y như Si-ru, vua Phe-rơ-sơ, đã truyền bảo chúng ta.

But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we alone will build unto the LORD God of Israel as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.

4 B ấy giờ dân của xứ xui cho dân Giu-đa ngã lòng nhát sợ, trong khi họ xây cất;

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah and troubled them in building

5 v à trọn đời Si-ru, vua Phe-rơ-sơ, cho đến đời Đa-ri-út, vua Phe-rơ-sơ, trị vì, chúng đem hối lộ cho những mưu sĩ chống với dân Giu-đa, đặng phá việc họ lo toan.

and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their counsel, all the days of Cyrus, king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

6 N hằm đời A-suê-ru, vừa bắt đầu lên ngôi, thì chúng làm một cái trạng cáo dân Giu-đa và dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem.

¶ And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote accusations against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 Q ua đời A

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes, king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

8 L ại Rê-hum, tể tướng, và Sim-sai, thơ ký, đồng viết biểu nghịch cùng Giê-ru-sa-lem, tấu lên vua A

Rehum, the chancellor, and Shimshai, the scribe, wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes, the king, in this sort:

9 R ê-hum, tể tướng, Sim-sai, thơ ký và các đồng liêu của họ, tức là người Đi-nít, người A-phạt-sa-thít, người Tạt-bê-lít, người A-phạt-sít, người A

Then wrote Rehum, the chancellor, and Shimshai, the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

10 v à dân sự khác mà Ô-náp-ba cao trọng và vang hiển đã đem qua, khiến ở trong thành Sa-ma-ri và trong các miền khác phía bên nầy sông.

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar (Sennacherib) brought over and set in the cities of Samaria and the rest that are on the other side of the river, and of Cheenet.

11 N ầy là bổn sao lại của bức biểu chúng gởi tấu vua A

This is the copy of the letter that they sent: Unto Artaxerxes, the king: Thy servants, the men of the other side of the river, and of Cheenet.

12 T âu vua hay rõ ràng những người Giu-đa đã từ nơi vua lên đến chúng tôi tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, đương lập lại thành phản nghịch hung ác ấy; chúng nó đã xây lại vách thành và tu bổ các nền cho xong rồi.

Be it known unto the king that the Jews who came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have founded the walls thereof and joined the foundations.

13 V ậy, nguyện vua biết rõ ràng ví bằng thành nầy được cất lại, và vách tường nó được xây lên, tất dân nó sẽ chẳng tiến cống, nộp thuế, hoặc đóng tiền mãi lộ, rồi sau chắc sẽ gây tai họa cho vua.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city is rebuilt, and the walls founded, they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so the revenue of the kings shall be reduced.

14 V ả, vì chúng tôi ăn muối của đền vua, và chẳng nỡ chứng kiến việc gây thiệt hại cho vua như vậy, nên chúng tôi sai sứ giả đến tâu rõ cùng vua,

Now because we are salted with the salt of the palace, and it is not just unto us to see the king’s dishonour; therefore, we have sent to make this known unto the king,

15 đ ặng người ta tra khảo trong sử ký các tổ phụ của vua: tất sẽ tìm thấy trong sách sử ký đó và biết rằng cái thành nầy vốn một cái thành phản nghịch, gây thiệt hại cho các vua và nước; từ thuở xưa, người ta hay làm loạn ở đó; bởi cớ ấy thành nầy đã bị phá hoang.

that search may be made in the book of the records of our fathers; so shalt thou find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that from old time they form rebellions in the midst of her, for which cause this city was destroyed.

16 C húng tôi tâu cáo vua hay rằng nếu thành nầy được cất lại, và vách tường nó được xây lên, tất lại cớ ấy, đất ở phía bên nầy sông sẽ chẳng còn phục vua nữa.

We notify the king that if this city is built again, and its walls founded, the portion on the other side of the river shall no longer be yours.

17 V ua bèn giáng chiếu cho tể tướng Rê-hum, cho thơ ký Sim-sai, và cho các đồng liêu của họ ở tại Sa-ma-ri và ở trong các miền khác phía bên nầy sông, mà rằng: Nguyện các ngươi bình yên.

¶ The king sent this answer unto Rehum, the chancellor, and to Shimshai, the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria and to the rest of those of the other side of the river and to Cheenet.

18 B ức biểu các ngươi dâng tấu lên ta đã đọc ra tỏ tường trước mặt ta.

The letter which you sent unto us has been plainly read before me.

19 C ứ theo mạng lịnh ta, người ta đã tra khảo, thấy rằng từ đời xưa cái thành nầy có dấy loạn với các vua, và trong đó hằng có sự phản nghịch và việc ngụy đảng.

And I commanded, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made in her

20 L ại tại Giê-ru-sa-lem đã có những vua rất quyền thế, quản hạt cả xứ ở bên kia sông, và người ta tiến cống, nộp thuế, và đóng tiền mãi lộ cho các vua đó.

and that there have been mighty kings in Jerusalem, who have ruled over all that is beyond the river, and that toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

21 V ì vậy, các ngươi hãy truyền lịnh ngăn cản những người đó cất lại cái thành nầy, cho đến chừng ta ban chiếu chỉ về việc đó.

Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease and that this city not be built until another commandment shall be given from me.

22 K há cẩn thận về sự nấy, e các vua bị thiệt hại thêm chăng.

Take heed now that ye not fail to do this; why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 V ừa khi đã đọc chiếu của vua A

Now when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai, the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews and made them to cease by force and power.

24 V ậy, công việc xây cất nhà của Đức Chúa Trời tại Giê-ru-sa-lem đình cho đến năm thứ hai đời Đa-ri-út, vua Phe-rơ-sơ trị vì.

Then the work of the house of God which was at Jerusalem ceased. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.
