1 Đ êm đó, vua không ngủ được; nên truyền đem sách sử ký, đọc tại trước mặt vua.

¶ On that night the king could not sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles, and they were read before the king.

2 N gười ta thấy có chép rằng Mạc-đô-chê đã tỏ ra mưu của Bích-than và Thê-rết, hai hoạn quan của vua, trong bọn kẻ giữ cửa, toan tra tay vào vua A-suê-ru.

And it was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, the keepers of the door, who had sought to lay hand on King Ahasuerus.

3 V ua nói: Vì công sự ấy, Mạc-đô-chê có được sự vinh hiển và tước vị gì chăng? Các người cận thần của vua đáp rằng: Người chẳng được gì hết.

And the king said, What honour and dignity has been done unto Mordecai for this? Then the king’s servants who ministered unto him answered, Nothing has been done for him.

4 V ua hỏi: Ai ở nơi viện trung? Vả, Ha-man đến ngoài viện của cung vua, đặng cầu vua truyền treo cổ Mạc-đô-chê nơi mộc hình, mà người đã dựng cho Mạc-đô-chê.

¶ And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman had come into the outward court of the king’s house to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.

5 C ác thần bộc của vua thưa rằng: Kìa, Ha-man đứng nơi viện trung. Vua bèn nói: Người hãy vào.

And the king’s servants said unto him, Behold, Haman stands in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.

6 H a-man bèn vào. Vua nói với người rằng: Phải làm chi cho người nào vua muốn tôn trọng? Ha-man nghĩ thầm rằng: Vua há muốn tôn trọng người nào khác hơn ta sao?

So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delights to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?

7 V ậy, Ha-man bèn tâu rằng: Hễ người nào vua muốn tôn trọng,

And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delights to honour,

8 k há đem cho áo triều của vua mặc, ngựa của vua cỡi, và đội mão triều thiên vua trên đầu người đó;

let the royal apparel be brought which the king wears, and the horse that the king rides upon, and the royal crown which is set upon his head;

9 á o triều và ngựa thì hãy giao vào tay của một triều thần tối tôn của vua, để mặc cho người mà vua muốn tôn trọng, dẫn người cỡi ngựa dạo chơi các đường phố của thành nội, và la lên rằng: Người mà vua muốn tôn trọng được đãi như vậy.

and let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that he may clothe the man whom the king delights to honour and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honour.

10 V ua nói với Ha-man rằng: Hãy mau mau đem áo triều và ngựa, y như lời ngươi nói, mà mặc cho Mạc-đô-chê, người Giu-đa, đương ngồi tại nơi cửa vua; chớ bỏ qua gì hết về mọi điều người đã nói.

Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do so unto Mordecai, the Jew, that sits at the king’s gate; let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken.

11 H a-man bèn lấy áo triều và ngựa, mặc cho Mạc-đô-chê, rồi dẫn người cỡi ngựa dạo qua các đường phố của thành nội, mà hô lên trước mặt người rằng: Người mà vua muốn tôn trọng được đãi như vậy!

Then Haman took the apparel and the horse and clothed Mordecai and brought him on horseback through the plaza of the city and caused it to be proclaimed before him, Thus shall be done unto the man whom the king delights to honour.

12 Đ oạn, Mạc-đô-chê trở về cửa vua. Còn Ha-man lật đật trở về nhà mình, thảm buồn và trùm đầu lại.

¶ After that Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman hastened to his house mourning and having his head covered.

13 H a-man thuật lại cho Xê-rết, vợ mình, và các bạn hữu mình hay mọi điều đã xảy đến cho mình. Khi ấy các người khôn ngoan và Xê-rết, vợ người, nói rằng: O

And Haman told Zeresh, his wife, and all his friends all that had befallen him. Then his wise men and Zeresh, his wife, said unto him, If Mordecai is of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.

14 K hi chúng còn đương nói chuyện với người, các hoạn quan của vua đến, lật đật đưa Ha-man đến dự tiệc yến mà bà Ê-xơ-tê đã dọn.

And while they were yet talking with him, the king’s eunuchs came in haste to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
