1 S au khi Sau-lơ thác, và Đa-vít đã thắng dân A-ma-lét trở về rồi, thì ở Xiết-lác hai ngày.

¶ Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

2 N gày thứ ba, xảy có một người ở dinh Sau-lơ trở về, quần áo rách rưới, đầu đóng bụi, đến trước mặt Đa-vít, sấp mình xuốn đất mà lạy.

it came to pass on the third day that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent and earth upon his head, and so it was when he came to David, that he fell to the earth and did obeisance.

3 Đ a-vít hỏi người rằng: Người ở đâu đến? Thưa rằng: Tôi ở trại quân Y-sơ-ra-ên thoát khỏi.

And David said unto him, Where dost thou come from? And he said unto him, I am escaped out of the camp of Israel.

4 Đ a-vít nói: Vậy, việc xảy ra sao? Hãy thuật cho ta. Người thưa: Dân sự đã trốn khỏi chiến trường, và có nhiều người trong họ bị ngã chết; Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than, con trai người, cũng đều chết nữa.

And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, The people fled from the battle, and many of the people fell and are dead, and Saul and Jonathan, his son, are dead also.

5 Đ a-vít hỏi người trai trẻ đem tin ấy rằng: Làm sao ngươi biết Sau-lơ và con trai người đã chết?

And David said unto the young man that told him, How dost thou know that Saul and Jonathan, his son, are dead?

6 N gười trai trẻ đem tin ấy thưa rằng: Tình cờ tôi đi qua núi Ghinh-bô -a, thấy Sau-lơ nương trên cây giáo mình. Xe và lính kị theo gần kịp người.

And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear, and the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

7 N gười xây lại thấy tôi và gọi tôi. Tôi thưa rằng: Có tôi đây.

And when he looked behind him, he saw me and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

8 N gười nói cùng tôi rằng: Ngươi là ai: Tôi thưa: Tôi là dân A-ma-léc.

And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

9 N gười bèn tiếp: Hãy lại gần giết ta đi, vì ta bị xây xẩm, nhưng hãy còn sống.

He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me and slay me, for anguish is come upon me, and all my soul is yet in me.

10 V ậy, tôi đến gần và giết người đi, vì tôi biết người bại trận, không còn sống được. Đoạn, tôi lấy mão triều thiên trên đầu người và vòng vàng nơi cánh tay người, mà đem về đây cho chúa tôi.

So I stood upon him and slew him because I was sure that he could not live after he was fallen, and I took the crown that was upon his head and the bracelet that was on his arm and have brought them here unto my lord.

11 Đ a-vít bèn xé quần áo mình; hết thảy những người đi theo cũng đều làm như vậy.

¶ Then David took hold on his clothes and rent them and likewise all the men that were with him.

12 K ế ấy, chúng để tang, khóc lóc, và nhịn đói cho đến chiều tối vì Sau-lơ, vì Giô-na-than, con trai người, vì dân sự của Đức Giê-hô-va, và vì nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, bởi chúng đã bị gươm ngã chết.

And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel because they had fallen by the sword.

13 Đ a-vít hỏi người trai trẻ đem tin nầy rằng: Ngươi ở đâu đến? Người thưa rằng: Tôi là con trai của một người ngoại bang, tức con của một người A-ma-léc.

And David said unto the young man that told him, From where art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

14 Đ a-vít nói rằng: Cớ sao ngươi không sợ giơ tay lên giết kẻ chịu xức dầu của Đức Giê-hô-va?

And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?

15 H uyết ngươi đổ lại trên đầu ngươi! Miệng ngươi đã làm chứng về ngươi, vì ngươi đã nói rằng: Chính tôi đã giết đấng chịu xức dầu của Đức Giê-hô-va.

Then David called one of the young men and said, Go near and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

16 Đ oạn, Đa-vít gọi một người trai trẻ mà nói rằng: Hãy lại gần, xông đánh hắn! Người ấy đánh hắn, và hắn chết.

And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head, for thy mouth has testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’s anointed.

17 B ây giờ, Đa-vít làm bài ai ca nầy về Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than, con trai Sau-lơ,

¶ And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son.

(He also bade them teach the sons of Judah the use of the bow. Behold, it is written in the book of righteousness.)

The glory of Israel is slain upon thy high places! How are the mighty fallen!

20 C hớ đi tuyên cáo điều đó trong Gát, Chớ rao truyền sự ấy trong các đường phố A

Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 H ỡi núi Ghinh-bô -a! Nguyện sương móc và mưa chẳng sa xuống trên ngươi, Và chẳng có đồng ruộng sanh sản vật dùng làm của lễ đầu mùa; Vì tại nơi đó, cái khiên của anh hùng bị nhơ nhuốc, Tức là cái khiên của Sau-lơ, nó sẽ chẳng hề được xức dầu nữa.

Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you nor fields of offerings, for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

22 C ây cung của Giô-na-than chẳng hề trở về Mà không dính đầy huyết kẻ chết, và mỡ của người dõng sĩ; Cây gươm của Sau-lơ không hề trở về mà không vinh quang.

Without the blood of the slain, without the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan never turned back, and the sword of Saul never returned empty.

23 K hi còn sống, Sau-lơ và Giô-na-tha yêu nhau đẹp nhau, Lúc chết chẳng lìa khỏi nhau; Hai người vốn lẹ hơn chim ưng, Mạnh hơn con sư tử!

Saul and Jonathan were loved and desired in their lives, and in their death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

24 H ỡi con gái Y-sơ-ra-ên, hãy khóc về Sau-lơ, Người đã mặc cho các ngươi áo xống màu đỏ điều xa xí, Trao giồi áo xống các ngươi bằng đồ vàng.

Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

25 C ớ sao người dõng sĩ ngã giữa cơn trận? Nhân sao Giô-na-than thác trên gò nỗng các ngươi?

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

26 H ỡi Giô-na-than, anh tôi, lòng tôi quặn thắt vì anh. Anh làm cho tôi khoái dạ; Nghĩa bầu bạn của anh lấy làm quí hơn tình thương người nữ.

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me; thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

27 C ớ sao những anh hùng bị ngã xuống? Nhân sao các binh khí họ bị bẻ gãy?

How are the valiant fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
