¶ Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this is Ahasuerus who reigned from India even unto Ethiopia over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces)

2 k hi vua ngự ngôi vương quốc tại Su-sơ, kinh đô người,

That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan, the palace,

3 n hằm năm thứ ba đời trị vì mình, người bày ra một bữa tiệc yến cho hết thảy quan trưởng và thần bộc mình. Đạo binh nước Phe-rơ-sơ và Mê-đi, các bực sang trọng cùng các quan cai của hàng tỉnh đều ở trước mặt người.

In the third year of his reign, he made a banquet unto all his princes and his slaves, having before him the power of Persia and Media, the governors and princes of the provinces, ‘

4 T rong nhiều ngày, tức trong một trăm tám mươi ngày, người bày tỏ sự giàu có sang trọng của nước và sự oai nghi rực rỡ của người.

to show them the riches of the glory of his kingdom and the honour of beauty of his greatness for many days, even one hundred and eighty days.

5 K hi các ngày đó đã qua rồi, vua bày đãi hết dân sự đương có ở tại kinh đô Su-sơ, hoặc lớn hay nhỏ, một cuộc yến tiệc bảy ngày, tại nơi hành lang của thượng uyển.

And when these days were expired, the king made a banquet unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, for seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace.

6 T ư bề có treo màn trướng sắc trắng, xanh lá cây, và xanh da trời, dùng dây gai màu trắng và màu tím cột vào vòng bạc và trụ cẩm thạch; các giường sập bằng vàng và bạc, đặt trên nền lót cẩm thạch đỏ và trắng, ngọc phụng và cẩm thạch đen.

There were white, green, and blue hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble; the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of porphyre and of marble and of alabaster and of blue.

7 N gười ta đãi uống bằng chén vàng, những chén nhiều thứ khác nhau, và có ngự tửu rất nhiều, cho xứng đáng theo bực giàu sang của vua.

And they gave them drink in vessels of gold (the vessels being diverse one from another) and royal wine in abundance, according to the power of the king.

8 N gười ta uống rượu tùy theo lịnh truyền chẳng ai ép phải uống; vì vua đã truyền các thần tể cung điện hãy làm tùy ý của mỗi người muốn.

And the drink was according to this law: let no one constrain themselves; for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house that they should do according to the will of each one.

9 H oàng hậu Vả-thi cũng đãi một bữa tiệc cho các người nữ tại cung vua A-suê-ru.

Likewise Vashti, the queen, made a banquet for the women in the royal house of King Ahasuerus.

10 Q ua ngày thứ bảy, vua uống rượu, hứng lòng rồi, bèn truyền cho Mê-hu-man, Bít-tha, Hạt-bô-na, Biếc-tha, A-bác-tha, Xê-thạt và Cạt-cách, tức bảy hoạn quan hầu-chực vua A-suê-ru,

¶ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven eunuchs that served in the presence of Ahasuerus, the king,

11 d ẫn hoàng hậu Vả-thi đến trước mặt vua, đội mão triều hoàng hậu, đặng tỏ ra phết lịch sự của bà cho dân sự và cho các quan trưởng xem thấy; vì tướng mạo bà rất tốt đẹp.

to bring Vashti, the queen, before the king with the crown of the kingdom, to show the people and the princes her beauty, for she was fair to behold.

12 N hưng hoàng hậu Vả-thi không khứng đến theo mạng của vua truyền bởi các hoạn quan. Vua bèn nổi giận dữ, phát nóng nả trong lòng.

But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s word by his eunuchs; therefore, the king was very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

13 V ả, thường khi vua có sự gì, bèn hỏi bàn các người rõ luật thông pháp.

Then the king asked the wise men, who knew the times, (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew about the law and rights,

14 N hững quan kế cận vua hơn hết là Cạt-sê-na, Sê-thạt, A

and the next to him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and who sat first in the kingdom;)

15 B ấy giờ vua hỏi chúng rằng: Hoàng hậu Vả-thi chẳng có vâng theo mạng lịnh của vua A-suê-ru cậy các hoạn quan truyền cho; vậy thì theo luật pháp chúng ta phải xử bà thể nào?

What shall we do unto Queen Vashti according to law because she has not performed the decree of King Ahasuerus by the eunuchs?

16 M ê-mu-can thưa trước mặt vua và các quan trưởng rằng: Vả-thi chẳng những làm mất lòng vua mà thôi, nhưng lại hết thảy những quan trưởng, và dân sự ở trong các tỉnh của vua A-suê-ru;

And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti, the queen, has not only committed iniquity against the king, but also against all the princes and against all the people that are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.

17 v ì việc nầy đồn ra trong các người nữ, khiến họ khinh bỉ chồng mình, nói rằng vua A-suê-ru có biểu dẫn hoàng hậu Vả-thi đến trước mặt vua, mà nàng không có đến.

For this deed of the queen shall be known abroad unto all the women so that they shall despise their husbands, saying, King Ahasuerus commanded Vashti, the queen, to be brought in before him, but she did not come.

18 N gày nay, các vợ quan trưởng Phe-rơ-sơ và Mê-đi mà đã hay việc hoàng hậu đã làm, cũng sẽ nói một cách với chồng mình, rồi sẽ có lắm điều khinh bỉ và cơn giận.

And now the princesses of Persia and Media who have heard of the deed of the queen shall say this unto all the king’s princes, and there shall be much contempt and wrath.

19 N ếu đẹp ý vua, khá giáng chiếu chỉ, chép vào trong sách luật pháp của nước Phe-rơ-sơ và Mê-đi, chẳng hề hay đổi đặng, rằng Vả-thi sẽ chẳng còn vào đến trước mặt vua A-suê-ru nữa; vua khá ban vị hoàng hậu của Vả-thi cho một người khác tốt hơn nàng.

If it pleases the king, let there go forth a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it not be altered, That Vashti come no more before King Ahasuerus, and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.

20 K hi chiếu chỉ của vua đã làm được truyền khắp trong nước, vì nước thật rộng lớn, thì các người vợ tất phải tôn kính chồng mình, từ người sang trọng cho đến kẻ nhỏ hèn.

And this sentence which the king shall make shall be heard throughout all his empire, although it is great, and all the wives shall give their husbands honour, from the greatest to the least.

21 L ời nầy đẹp ý vua và các quan trưởng; vua bèn làm theo lời của Mê-mu-can đã luận,

And this word pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan;

22 h ạ chiếu cho các tỉnh của vua, theo chữ và tiếng của mỗi tỉnh mỗi dân, mà bảo rằng mỗi người đờn ông phải làm chủ nhà mình, và lấy tiếng bổn xứ mình mà dạy biểu.

for he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, saying, That every man should bear rule in his own house and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
