1 D ijo Jehová a Samuel: ¿Hasta cuándo llorarás a Saúl, habiéndolo yo desechado para que no reine sobre Israel? Llena tu cuerno de aceite, y ven, te enviaré a Isaí de Belén, porque de sus hijos me he provisto de rey.

¶ And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil and go; I will send thee to Jesse of Bethlehem for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 Y dijo Samuel: ¿Cómo iré? Si Saúl lo supiera, me mataría. Jehová respondió: Toma contigo una becerra de la vacada, y di: A ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová he venido.

And Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul understands it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take a heifer with thee and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.

3 Y llama a Isaí al sacrificio, y yo te enseñaré lo que has de hacer; y me ungirás al que yo te dijere.

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do, and thou shalt anoint unto me the one whom I name unto thee.

4 H izo, pues, Samuel como le dijo Jehová; y luego que él llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron a recibirle con miedo, y dijeron: ¿Es pacífica tu venida?

And Samuel did as the LORD said and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming and said, Comest thou peaceably?

5 E l respondió: Sí, vengo a ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová; santificaos, y venid conmigo al sacrificio. Y santificando él a Isaí y a sus hijos, los llamó al sacrificio.

And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.

6 Y aconteció que cuando ellos vinieron, él vio a Eliab, y dijo: De cierto delante de Jehová está su ungido.

¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab and said, Peradventure is the LORD’s anointed before him?

7 Y Jehová respondió a Samuel: No mires a su parecer, ni a lo grande de su estatura, porque yo lo desecho; porque Jehová no mira lo que mira el hombre; pues el hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos, pero Jehová mira el corazón.

And the LORD replied unto Samuel, Do not look on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him, for it is not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

8 E ntonces llamó Isaí a Abinadab, y lo hizo pasar delante de Samuel, el cual dijo: Tampoco a éste ha escogido Jehová.

Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one.

9 H izo luego pasar Isaí a Sama. Y él dijo: Tampoco a éste ha elegido Jehová.

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one.

10 E hizo pasar Isaí siete hijos suyos delante de Samuel; pero Samuel dijo a Isaí: Jehová no ha elegido a éstos.

Again, Jesse made his seven sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD has not chosen these.

11 E ntonces dijo Samuel a Isaí: ¿Son éstos todos tus hijos? Y él respondió: Queda aún el menor, que apacienta las ovejas. Y dijo Samuel a Isaí: Envía por él, porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga aquí.

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are all thy young men here? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he keeps the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send for him, for we will not sit down to the table until he comes here.

12 E nvió, pues, por él, y le hizo entrar; y era rubio, hermoso de ojos, y de buen parecer. Entonces Jehová dijo: Levántate y úngelo, porque éste es.

And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and of a beautiful countenance and handsome. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.

13 Y Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite, y lo ungió en medio de sus hermanos; y desde aquel día en adelante el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre David. Se levantó luego Samuel, y se volvió a Ramá. David toca para Saúl

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

14 E l Espíritu de Jehová se apartó de Saúl, y le atormentaba un espíritu malo de parte de Jehová.

¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

15 Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron: He aquí ahora, un espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta.

And Saul’s slaves said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles thee.

16 D iga, pues, nuestro señor a tus siervos que están delante de ti, que busquen a alguno que sepa tocar el arpa, para que cuando esté sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, él toque con su mano, y tengas alivio.

Let our lord now command thy slaves, which are before thee, to seek out a man who is a cunning player on a harp, and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand and thou shalt have relief.

17 Y Saúl respondió a sus criados: Buscadme, pues, ahora alguno que toque bien, y traédmelo.

And Saul said unto his slaves, Provide me now a man that can play well and bring him to me.

18 E ntonces uno de los criados respondió diciendo: He aquí yo he visto a un hijo de Isaí de Belén, que sabe tocar, y es valiente y vigoroso y hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, y hermoso, y Jehová está con él.

Then one of the servants answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem, that is cunning in playing and a mighty valiant man and a man of war and prudent in speech and handsome, and the LORD is with him.

19 Y Saúl envió mensajeros a Isaí, diciendo: Envíame a David tu hijo, el que está con las ovejas.

Therefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse and said, Send me David, thy son, who is with the sheep.

20 Y tomó Isaí un asno cargado de pan, una vasija de vino y un cabrito, y lo envió a Saúl por medio de David su hijo.

And Jesse took an ass laden with bread and a bottle of wine and a kid and sent them by David, his son, unto Saul.

21 Y viniendo David a Saúl, estuvo delante de él; y él le amó mucho, y le hizo su paje de armas.

And David came to Saul and stood before him; and he loved him greatly, and he became his armourbearer.

22 Y Saúl envió a decir a Isaí: Yo te ruego que esté David conmigo, pues ha hallado gracia en mis ojos.

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he has found favour in my sight.

23 Y cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios venía sobre Saúl, David tomaba el arpa y tocaba con su mano; y Saúl tenía alivio y estaba mejor, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp and played with his hand; so Saul was refreshed and was better, and the evil spirit departed from him.
