1 E staba entonces enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta su hermana.

¶ Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

2 ( María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume, y le enjugó los pies con sus cabellos.

(It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

3 E nviaron, pues, las hermanas para decir a Jesús: Señor, he aquí el que amas está enfermo.

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

4 O yéndolo Jesús, dijo: Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

5 Y amaba Jesús a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 C uando oyó, pues, que estaba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

7 L uego, después de esto, dijo a los discípulos: Vamos a Judea otra vez.

Then after that he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judea again.

8 L e dijeron los discípulos: Rabí, ahora procuraban los judíos apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?

His disciples said unto him, Rabbi, the Jews of late sought to stone thee, and goest thou there again?

9 R espondió Jesús: ¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anda de día, no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo;

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.

10 p ero el que anda de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.

But he who walks in the night stumbles because there is no light in him.

11 D icho esto, les dijo después: Nuestro amigo Lázaro duerme; mas voy para despertarle.

Having said that he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.

12 D ijeron entonces sus discípulos: Señor, si duerme, sanará.

Then his disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he shall be saved.

13 P ero Jesús decía esto de la muerte de Lázaro; y ellos pensaron que hablaba del reposar del sueño.

But Jesus had spoken of his death, and they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

14 E ntonces Jesús les dijo claramente: Lázaro ha muerto;

Then Jesus said unto them plainly, Lazarus has died.

15 y me alegro por vosotros, de no haber estado allí, para que creáis; mas vamos a él.

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, in order that ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

16 D ijo entonces Tomás, llamado Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él. Jesús, la resurrección y la vida

Then Thomas said, who is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us go also, that we may die with him.

17 V ino, pues, Jesús, y halló que hacía ya cuatro días que Lázaro estaba en el sepulcro.

¶ Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18 B etania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a quince estadios;

Now Bethany was near unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;

19 y muchos de los judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, para consolarlas por su hermano.

and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 E ntonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús venía, salió a encontrarle; pero María se quedó en casa.

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him; but Mary sat still in the house.

21 Y Marta dijo a Jesús: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.

Then Martha said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.

22 M as también sé ahora que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo dará.

But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it unto thee.

23 J esús le dijo: Tu hermano resucitará.

Jesus said unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24 M arta le dijo: Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el día postrero.

Martha said unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection in the last day.

25 L e dijo Jesús: Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá.

Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection and the life; he that believes in me, though he is dead, yet shall he live;

26 Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?

and whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27 L e dijo: Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo. Jesús llora ante la tumba de Lázaro

She said unto him, Yes, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.

28 H abiendo dicho esto, fue y llamó a María su hermana, diciéndole en secreto: El Maestro está aquí y te llama.

And having said this, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calls for thee.

29 E lla, cuando lo oyó, se levantó de prisa y vino a él.

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came unto him.

30 J esús todavía no había entrado en la aldea, sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta le había encontrado.

(Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.)

31 E ntonces los judíos que estaban en casa con ella y la consolaban, cuando vieron que María se había levantado de prisa y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: Va al sepulcro a llorar allí.

Then the Jews who were with her in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goes unto the grave to weep there.

32 M aría, cuando llegó a donde estaba Jesús, al verle, se postró a sus pies, diciéndole: Señor, si hubieses estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano.

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.

33 J esús entonces, al verla llorando, y a los judíos que la acompañaban, también llorando, se estremeció en espíritu y se conmovió,

¶ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he became enraged in the Spirit and stirred himself up

34 y dijo: ¿Dónde le pusisteis? Le dijeron: Señor, ven y ve.

and said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

35 J esús lloró.

Jesus wept.

36 D ijeron entonces los judíos: Mirad cómo le amaba.

Then the Jews said, Behold how he loved him!

37 Y algunos de ellos dijeron: ¿No podía éste, que abrió los ojos al ciego, haber hecho también que Lázaro no muriera? Resurrección de Lázaro

And some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have also caused that this man should not have died?

38 J esús, profundamente conmovido otra vez, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva, y tenía una piedra puesta encima.

Jesus therefore, becoming enraged again in himself, came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

39 D ijo Jesús: Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que había muerto, le dijo: Señor, hiede ya, porque es de cuatro días.

Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that had died, said unto him, Lord, by this time he stinks, for he has been dead four days.

40 J esús le dijo: ¿No te he dicho que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios?

Jesus said unto her, Did I not say unto thee that if thou wouldest believe thou shalt see the glory of God?

41 E ntonces quitaron la piedra de donde había sido puesto el muerto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos a lo alto, dijo: Padre, gracias te doy por haberme oído.

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus, lifting up his eyes, said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 Y o sabía que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que está alrededor, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

And I knew that thou hearest me always, but because of the people who stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 Y habiendo dicho esto, clamó a gran voz:!! Lázaro, ven fuera!

And having said these things, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 Y el que había muerto salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: Desatadle, y dejadle ir. El complot para matar a Jesús (Mt. 26. 1-5; Mr. 14. 1-2; Lc. 22. 1-2)

Then he that had been dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

45 E ntonces muchos de los judíos que habían venido para acompañar a María, y vieron lo que hizo Jesús, creyeron en él.

¶ Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed on him.

46 P ero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.

But some of them went unto the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47 E ntonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron el concilio, y dijeron: ¿Qué haremos? Porque este hombre hace muchas señales.

Then the high priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, What shall we do? for this man does many signs.

48 S i le dejamos así, todos creerán en él; y vendrán los romanos, y destruirán nuestro lugar santo y nuestra nación.

If we let him thus alone, everyone will believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and the nation.

49 E ntonces Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: Vosotros no sabéis nada;

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all

50 n i pensáis que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca.

nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation be lost.

51 E sto no lo dijo por sí mismo, sino que como era el sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación;

And this he spoke not of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;

52 y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.

and not for that nation only, but that he should also gather together in one the sons of God that were scattered abroad.

53 A sí que, desde aquel día acordaron matarle.

So that from that day forth they took counsel together to kill him.

54 P or tanto, Jesús ya no andaba abiertamente entre los judíos, sino que se alejó de allí a la región contigua al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín; y se quedó allí con sus discípulos.

Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there unto a country near to the wilderness into a city called Ephraim and there continued with his disciples.

55 Y estaba cerca la pascua de los judíos; y muchos subieron de aquella región a Jerusalén antes de la pascua, para purificarse.

And the passover of the Jews was now at hand, and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover to purify themselves;

56 Y buscaban a Jesús, y estando ellos en el templo, se preguntaban unos a otros: ¿Qué os parece? ¿No vendrá a la fiesta?

and they sought for Jesus and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

57 Y los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno supiese dónde estaba, lo manifestase, para que le prendiesen.

Now both the high priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if anyone knew where he was he should show it, that they might take him.
