1 U stedes vayan en pos del amor, y procuren alcanzar los dones espirituales, sobre todo el de profecía,

¶ Follow after charity and earnestly pursue spiritual gifts, but above all, that ye may prophesy.

2 p ues el que habla en lenguas extrañas le habla a Dios, pero no a los hombres; y nadie le entiende porque, en el Espíritu, habla de manera misteriosa.

For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God, for no one understands him, even though by the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

3 P ero el que profetiza les habla a los demás para edificarlos, exhortarlos y consolarlos.

But he that prophesies speaks unto men for edification and exhortation and comfort.

4 E l que habla en lengua extraña, se edifica a sí mismo; en cambio, el que profetiza, edifica a la iglesia.

He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself, but he that prophesies edifies the congregation.

5 A sí que, yo quisiera que todos ustedes hablaran en lenguas, pero más quisiera que profetizaran; porque profetizar es más importante que hablar en lenguas, a menos que el que las hable también las interprete, para que la iglesia sea edificada.

I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied, for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, that the congregation may receive edifying.

6 H ermanos, ¿de qué les serviría a ustedes que yo fuera a visitarlos y les hablara en lenguas, a menos que les comunicara alguna revelación, o conocimiento, o profecía, o enseñanza?

¶ Now, brothers, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either with revelation or with knowledge or with prophecy or with doctrine?

7 S i los instrumentos musicales, como la flauta o la cítara, no tuvieran un sonido claramente distinto, ¿cómo podríamos distinguir entre la música de flauta y la música de cítara?

And even things without life giving sound, whether flute or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is played or harped?

8 Y si el toque de trompeta resulta incierto, ¿quién se alistará para el combate?

For if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

9 L o mismo pasa con ustedes: si no usan la lengua para comunicar un mensaje claro y comprensible, ¿cómo se va a entender lo que dicen? Es como si hablaran al aire.

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue a clear and definite word, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 N o hay duda de que en el mundo hay muchos idiomas, y que ninguno de ellos carece de significado.

There are many kinds of distinct voices in the world, and nothing is dumb.

11 P ero si yo no sé lo que significan las palabras, seré como un extranjero para el que habla, y el que habla será como un extranjero para mí.

Therefore, if I ignore the virtue of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaks as a barbarian, and he that speaks shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 L o mismo pasa con ustedes. Puesto que anhelan tener los dones espirituales, procuren abundar en ellos para la edificación de la iglesia.

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye desire the things of the Spirit, earnestly pursue excellence unto the edification of the congregation.

13 P or lo tanto, el que hable en una lengua extraña, pida en oración poder interpretarla.

Therefore, let him that speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 P orque, si yo oro en una lengua extraña, es mi espíritu el que ora, pero mi entendimiento no se beneficia.

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 E ntonces, ¿qué debo hacer? Pues orar con el espíritu, pero también con el entendimiento; cantar con el espíritu, pero también con el entendimiento.

¶ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 P orque si tú alabas a Dios sólo con el espíritu, ¿qué hará el que solamente está escuchando? ¿Cómo dirá «Amén» a tu acción de gracias, si no sabe lo que has dicho?

Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupies the place of the ignorant say, Amen, at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understands not what thou sayest?

17 T u acción de gracias puede ser muy buena, pero el otro no será edificado.

For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 D oy gracias a Dios de que hablo en lenguas más que todos ustedes,

I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all;

19 p ero en la iglesia prefiero hablar cinco palabras con mi entendimiento, para poder enseñar a los demás, que diez mil palabras en una lengua extraña.

yet in the congregation I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 H ermanos, no sean como niños en su modo de razonar. Sean como niños en cuanto a la malicia, pero en su modo de razonar actúen como gente madura.

Brothers, be not children in understanding, howbeit in malice be ye children; but in understanding be perfect.

21 E n la ley está escrito: «Yo hablaré con este pueblo en otras lenguas y con otros labios, pero ni así me obedecerán, dice el Señor.»

¶ In the law it is written, In other tongues and with other lips I will speak unto this people; and yet for all that, they will not hear me, saith the Lord.

22 L as lenguas son una señal para los incrédulos, pero no para los creyentes; en cambio, la profecía no es una señal para los incrédulos, sino para los creyentes.

Therefore, tongues are for a sign, not to those that believe, but to those that do not believe; but prophecy is not for those that do not believe, but for those who believe.

23 I magínense a toda la iglesia reunida en un solo lugar, y que llegue alguien que sepa poco de la fe cristiana, o que sea incrédulo, y oiga a todos hablar en lenguas extrañas. ¿Acaso no pensará que ustedes están locos?

If, therefore, the whole congregation is come together into one place and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

24 P ero si todos ustedes profetizan, y entra algún incrédulo o alguien que sepa poco de la fe cristiana, esa persona podrá ser reprendida y juzgada por todos ustedes;

But if all prophesy, and there come in one that does not believe or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all;

25 a sí los secretos de su corazón quedarán al descubierto, y esa persona se postrará ante Dios y lo adorará, y reconocerá que Dios está realmente entre ustedes.

for the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed in you.

26 P or lo tanto, hermanos, cuando ustedes se reúnan, tal vez cada uno tenga un salmo, una enseñanza, una revelación, un mensaje en lengua extraña, o una interpretación; pero todo deben hacerlo para la edificación.

¶ How is it then, brothers? when ye come together, each one of you has a psalm, has doctrine, has tongues, has revelation, has interpretation. Let all things be done unto edification.

27 S i se habla en una lengua extraña, que hablen dos, y hasta tres, pero que lo hagan por turnos, y que uno de ellos interprete lo que se diga.

If anyone speaks in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 P ero si no hay quien interprete, esa persona debe guardar silencio en la iglesia, y hablar para sí mismo y para Dios.

But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silence in the congregation, and let him speak to himself and to God.

29 D e la misma manera, que hablen dos y hasta tres profetas, y que los demás juzguen lo dicho.

Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the others judge.

30 S i alguien estando sentado recibe una revelación, el primero debe dejar de hablar;

If any thing is revealed to another that sits by, let the first be silent.

31 a sí todos podrán profetizar por turno, a fin de que todos aprendan y sean exhortados.

For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.

32 E l don de profecía debe estar bajo el control de los profetas,

And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33 p ues Dios no es Dios de confusión, sino de paz. Como en todas las iglesias de los santos,

For God is not the God of disorder, but of peace, as in all the congregations of the saints.

34 e n la congregación las esposas deben guardar silencio, porque no les está permitido hablar, sino que estén sujetas, como también la ley lo dice.

¶ Let your women keep silence in the congregations, for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be in subjection, as also saith the law.

35 S i la esposa quiere aprender algo, que le pregunte a su esposo en su casa, porque no es apropiado que una mujer hable en la congregación.

And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is a dishonest thing for women to speak in the congregation.

36 L a palabra de Dios, ¿se originó entre ustedes, o más bien solamente llegó a ustedes?

¶ What? Did the word of God come out from you? or did it come unto you only?

37 S i alguno se cree profeta, o espiritual, reconozca que lo que les escribo son mandamientos del Señor;

If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 p ero si alguien no quiere reconocerlo, que no lo reconozca.

But anyone that ignores them shall be ignored.

39 A sí que, hermanos, procuren profetizar, y no impidan que se hable en lenguas extrañas,

Therefore, brothers, earnestly pursue prophecy and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

40 s iempre y cuando todo se haga decentemente y con orden.

But let all things be done decently and in order.
