1 « La plata se extrae de las minas, y el oro se refina en el crisol.

¶ Surely there is a mine for the silver, and a place for gold where they refine it.

2 D el polvo de la tierra se saca el hierro, y el cobre se aparta de la escoria.

Iron is taken out of the dust, and bronze is melted out of the stone.

3 C on el fuego se ha puesto fin a las tinieblas, y el hombre examina con detalle cada piedra que hay en esa densa oscuridad.

He set a border unto the darkness, and unto every perfect work that he made, he placed a stone of darkness and shadow of death.

4 A bre minas en lugares no habitados, en sitios donde nadie ha plantado el pie, y entran los mineros, balanceándose con sogas.

The river breaks forth next to the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot, that were higher than man, are gone away.

5 D e la tierra se obtiene el alimento, y abajo de ella todo se convierte en fuego.

Land out of which bread comes forth, and underneath it shall be as if it were converted in fire.

6 E n su seno se encuentran zafiros, y aun el polvo de la tierra es oro.

A place where its stones shall be sapphires; and it shall have dust of gold.

7 » Son lugares que las aves desconocen, y que jamás vieron los ojos de los buitres.

A path which no fowl knows and which the vulture’s eye has never seen;

8 N unca pasaron por allí las fieras, ni tampoco el león feroz pisó ese lugar.

the young of the proud have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed by it.

9 C on el duro pedernal en la mano, el hombre cava la raíz de las montañas.

He put his hand upon the flint and overturned the mountains from the root.

10 H ace túneles en las rocas, y sus ojos descubren piedras preciosas.

He cut rivers out of the rocks; and his eye saw every precious thing.

11 E xplora el lugar donde nacen los ríos, y saca a la luz muchas cosas escondidas.

He detained the rivers in their source and caused that which was hid to be brought to light.

12 » Pero ¿dónde se halla la sabiduría? ¿En qué lugar está la inteligencia?

But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 N adie sabe lo que vale, pues no se halla en este mundo.

Man never knew its price; neither is it found in the land of the living.

14 E l mar profundo dice: “Aquí no está”, y el océano asegura: “Yo no la tengo”.

¶ The deep saith, It is not in me; and the sea saith, It is not with me.

15 L a sabiduría no se compra con oro, ni su precio puede pagarse con plata.

It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for its price.

16 N o se compra con oro de Ofir, ni con el precioso ónice, ni con el zafiro.

It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx or the sapphire.

17 N i los diamantes ni el oro se le comparan, ni se da a cambio de finas alhajas de oro.

Gold cannot equal it, nor can diamond; neither shall it be exchanged for vessels of fine gold.

18 N o se le comparan el coral y las perlas; La sabiduría es más valiosa que las piedras preciosas.

No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls; for wisdom is better than precious stones.

19 N i el topacio de Etiopía, ni el oro más fino, son de tanto valor como ella.

The emerald of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

20 » ¿De dónde viene la sabiduría? ¿En qué lugar se encuentra la inteligencia?

¶ Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?

21 S e halla escondida de todo ser vivo; se halla escondida de las aves del cielo.

Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living and kept concealed from every fowl of the heaven.

22 A unque la muerte y el sepulcro aseguran que a sus oídos ha llegado su fama.

Hell and death say, We have heard its fame with our ears.

23 » Sólo Dios sabe llegar hasta ella; sólo él sabe en dónde se halla.

God understands its way, and he alone knows its place.

24 C on su mirada ve hasta los confines de la tierra, y ve también lo que pasa bajo el cielo.

For he looks unto the ends of the earth and sees under the whole heaven,

25 C uando Dios determinó el peso del viento, y midió el agua de mares y ríos;

To make a weight for the wind and to supply water by measure,

26 c uando estableció una ley para las lluvias, y señaló la ruta de los relámpagos,

when he made a law for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunders.

27 v io a la sabiduría, que estaba allí, y la puso a prueba y reconoció su valor.

Then he saw it and counted it; he prepared it and also searched it out.

28 E ntonces dijo a la humanidad: “El temor del Señor es la sabiduría. Quien se aparta del mal es inteligente.”»

And unto man he said, Behold, that the fear of the Lord, is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
