1 E n cierto día de reposo, al pasar Jesús por los sembrados, sus discípulos iban arrancando espigas y desgranándolas con las manos, para comerse el grano.

¶ And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first that he went through the grain fields and his disciples plucked the ears of grain and ate, rubbing them in their hands.

2 A lgunos de los fariseos les dijeron: «¿Por qué hacen lo que no está permitido hacer en los días de reposo?»

And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

3 J esús les respondió: «¿Ni siquiera han leído lo que hizo David, cuando él y sus acompañantes tuvieron hambre?

And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when he and those that were with him were hungry,

4 P ues entró en la casa de Dios y tomó los panes de la proposición, que sólo a los sacerdotes les es permitido comer. Y comió David, y los compartió con sus acompañantes.»

how he went into the house of God and did take and eat the showbread and gave also to those that were with him, which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

5 Y añadió: «El Hijo del Hombre es también Señor del día de reposo.» El hombre de la mano atrofiada

And he said unto them, The Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath.

6 O tro día de reposo, Jesús entró en la sinagoga y comenzó a enseñar. Había allí un hombre que tenía la mano derecha atrofiada,

And it came to pass also on another sabbath that he entered into the synagogue and taught, and a man was there whose right hand was withered.

7 y los escribas y los fariseos, que buscaban un motivo para acusar a Jesús, lo observaban para ver si en el día de reposo sanaba a aquel hombre.

And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day, that they might find an accusation against him.

8 P ero Jesús, que sabía lo que pensaban, dijo al hombre que tenía la mano atrofiada: «Levántate, y ponte en medio.» El hombre se puso de pie,

But he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise up and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

9 y Jesús dijo: «Voy a preguntarles algo. ¿Qué está permitido hacer en los días de reposo? ¿El bien, o el mal? ¿Salvar una vida, o quitar la vida?»

Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good or to do evil? to save a person or to destroy them?

10 M iró entonces a todos los que estaban alrededor, y dijo al hombre: «Extiende tu mano.» Aquel hombre lo hizo así, y su mano quedó sana.

And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other.

11 L os escribas y los fariseos se pusieron furiosos y comenzaron a discutir qué podrían hacer contra Jesús. Elección de los doce apóstoles

And they were filled with madness and talked one with another about what they might do to Jesus.

12 P or esos días Jesús fue al monte a orar, y pasó la noche orando a Dios.

¶ And it came to pass in those days that he went out into the mountain to pray and continued all night in prayer to God.

13 A l llegar el día, llamó a sus discípulos y escogió a doce de ellos, a los cuales también llamó apóstoles, a saber:

And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples; and of them he chose twelve, whom he also named apostles:

14 S imón, a quien llamó Pedro; su hermano Andrés, Jacobo, Juan, Felipe, Bartolomé,

Simon (whom he also named Peter) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

15 M ateo, Tomás, Jacobo hijo de Alfeo, Simón, conocido como el Zelote,

Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon called Zelotes

16 J udas hijo de Jacobo, y Judas Iscariote, que llegó a ser el traidor. Jesús atiende a una multitud

and Judas the brother of James and Judas Iscariot, who also was the traitor.

17 J esús descendió con ellos y se detuvo en un llano, en compañía de sus discípulos y de una gran multitud de toda Judea, de Jerusalén y de la costa de Tiro y Sidón. Habían venido a escucharlo y a ser sanados de sus enfermedades.

And he came down with them and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases;

18 T ambién eran sanados los que eran atormentados por espíritus impuros.

and those that were tormented with unclean spirits were healed.

19 T oda la gente procuraba tocarlo, porque de él salía un poder que sanaba a todos. Bienaventuranzas y ayes

And the whole multitude sought to touch him, for there went virtue out of him and healed them all.

20 J esús miró a sus discípulos y les dijo: «Bienaventurados ustedes los pobres, porque el reino de Dios les pertenece.

¶ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said, Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

21 » Bienaventurados ustedes los que ahora tienen hambre, porque serán saciados. Bienaventurados ustedes los que ahora lloran, porque reirán.

Blessed are those that hunger now, for ye shall be filled. Blessed are those that weep now, for ye shall laugh.

22 » Bienaventurados serán ustedes cuando, por causa del Hijo del Hombre, la gente los odie, los segregue, los vitupere, y menosprecie su nombre como algo malo.

Blessed are ye when men shall hate you and when they shall separate you from their company and shall reproach you and cast out your name as evil for the sake of the Son of man.

23 C uando llegue ese día, alégrense y llénense de gozo, porque grande será el galardón que recibirán en los cielos. ¡Eso mismo hicieron con los profetas los antepasados de esta gente!

Rejoice ye in that day and leap for joy; for, behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers treated the prophets in the same manner.

24 » Pero ¡ay de ustedes los ricos!, porque ya han recibido su consuelo.

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

25 » ¡Ay de ustedes, los que ahora están satisfechos!, porque habrán de pasar hambre. »¡Ay de ustedes, los que ahora ríen!, porque habrán de llorar y de lamentarse.

Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

26 » ¡Ay de ustedes, cuando todos los alaben!, porque lo mismo hacían con los falsos profetas los antepasados de esta gente. El amor hacia los enemigos

Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers treat the false prophets.

27 » A ustedes, los que me escuchan, les digo: Amen a sus enemigos, hagan bien a quienes los odian,

¶ But I say unto you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

28 b endigan a quienes los maldicen, y oren por quienes los calumnian.

bless those that curse you, and pray for those who despitefully use you.

29 S i alguno te golpea en una mejilla, preséntale también la otra. Si alguien te quita la capa, deja que se lleve también la túnica.

And unto the one that smites thee on the one cheek offer also the other, and to the one that takes away thy cloak defend not thy coat also.

30 A todo el que te pida, dale; y a quien se lleve lo que es tuyo, no le pidas que te lo devuelva. La regla de oro

Give to everyone that asks of thee, and of the one that takes away thy goods ask them not to return them.

31 » Traten a los demás como ustedes quieran ser tratados.

And as ye desire that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

32 P orque si ustedes aman sólo a quienes los aman, ¿qué mérito tienen? ¡Hasta los pecadores aman a quienes los aman!

For if ye love those who love you, what grace shall ye have? for sinners also love those that love them.

33 Y si ustedes tratan bien sólo a quienes los tratan bien a ustedes, ¿qué mérito tienen? ¡Hasta los pecadores hacen lo mismo!

And if ye do good to those who do good to you, what grace shall ye have? for sinners also do even the same.

34 S i prestan algo a aquellos de quienes ustedes esperan recibir algo, ¿qué mérito tienen? ¡Hasta los pecadores se prestan unos a otros para recibir otro tanto!

And if ye lend to those of whom ye hope to receive, what grace shall ye have? for sinners also lend to sinners to receive as much again.

35 U stedes deben amar a sus enemigos, hacer el bien y dar prestado, sin esperar nada a cambio. Grande será entonces el galardón que recibirán, y serán hijos del Altísimo. Porque él es benigno con los ingratos y con los malvados.

But rather love ye your enemies and do good and lend, hoping for nothing again, and your reward shall be great; and ye shall be the sons of the Most High, for he is kind even unto the unthankful and to the evil.

36 P or lo tanto, sean compasivos, como también su Padre es compasivo. El juzgar a los demás

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

37 » No juzguen, y no serán juzgados. No condenen, y no serán condenados. Perdonen, y serán perdonados.

¶ Judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive, and ye shall be forgiven;

38 D en, y se les dará una medida buena, incluso apretada, remecida y desbordante. Porque con la misma medida con que ustedes midan, serán medidos.»

give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye measure out it shall be measured to you again.

39 L es dijo también una parábola: «¿Acaso un ciego puede guiar a otro ciego? ¿Acaso no se caerán los dos en algún hoyo?

And he spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? Shall they not both fall into the pit?

40 E l discípulo no es superior a su maestro, pero el que complete su aprendizaje será como su maestro.

The disciple is not above his master, but any one that is as the master shall be perfect.

41 ¿ Por qué miras la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano, y no miras la viga que está en tu propio ojo?

And why dost thou behold the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but not perceive the beam that is in thine own eye?

42 ¿ Cómo puedes decirle a tu hermano: “Hermano, déjame sacarte la paja que tienes en tu ojo”, si no ves la viga que tienes en tu propio ojo? ¡Hipócrita! Saca primero la viga de tu propio ojo, y entonces podrás ver bien para sacar la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano. Por sus frutos serán conocidos

Or how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself dost not behold the beam that is in thine own eye? Hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

43 » Ningún árbol bueno produce frutos malos, ni tampoco un árbol malo produce frutos buenos.

For a good tree does not bring forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

44 P orque cada árbol se conoce por su fruto. No se cortan higos de los espinos, ni se vendimian uvas de las zarzas.

For every tree is known by its own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush do they gather grapes.

45 E l hombre bueno, saca lo bueno del buen tesoro de su corazón. El hombre malo, saca lo malo del mal tesoro de su corazón; porque de la abundancia del corazón habla la boca. Los dos cimientos

The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil, for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

46 » ¿Por qué me llaman ustedes “Señor, Señor”, y no hacen lo que les mando hacer?

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

47 L es voy a decir como quién es el que viene a mí, y oye mis palabras y las pone en práctica:

Whosoever comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you to whom he is like:

48 E s como quien, al construir una casa, cava hondo y pone los cimientos sobre la roca. En caso de una inundación, si el río golpea con ímpetu la casa, no logra sacudirla porque está asentada sobre la roca.

he is like a man who built a house and dug deep and laid the foundation upon rock; and when the flood arose, the river beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it, for it was founded upon rock.

49 P ero el que oye mis palabras y no las pone en práctica, es como quien construye su casa sobre el suelo y no le pone cimientos. Si el río golpea con ímpetu la casa, la derrumba y la deja completamente en ruinas.»

But he that hears and does not do is like a man that built a house upon the earth without a foundation against which the river beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
