¶ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a maid?

2 ¿ Cómo podría Dios premiarme por eso? ¿Qué me daría el Todopoderoso en las alturas?

For what reward would God give me from above and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

3 ¿ Acaso él no castiga a los malvados? ¿Acaso no hay dolor para los malhechores?

Is there no destruction for the wicked? And banishment for the workers of iniquity?

4 ¿ Acaso Dios no vigila mis pasos y se fija en todo lo que hago?

Does he not see my ways and count all my steps?

5 » Si acaso me he conducido con mentira, o me he apresurado a engañar a todo el mundo,

If I have walked with falsehood or if my foot has hastened to deceit,

6 q ue Dios me pese en su balanza, para que compruebe que soy inocente.

let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know my integrity.

7 S i acaso me he apartado del camino, y permití que mis ojos guiaran mis sentidos; o dejé que mis manos tomaran algo ajeno,

If my step has turned out of the way and my heart walked after my eyes and if any blot has cleaved to my hands,

8 ¡ que otro coseche lo que yo siembre, y que mis siembras sean desarraigadas!

then let me sow, and let another eat, and let my offspring be rooted out.

9 » Si me dejé seducir por la mujer ajena, y esperé a que mi prójimo saliera de su casa,

¶ If my heart has been deceived regarding a woman, or if I have laid in wait at my neighbour’s door,

10 ¡ que mi esposa cocine para otro, y que otros hombres la posean!

then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.

11 E sos actos son malvados, son inicuos, y deben ser castigados por los jueces.

For this is lewdness and iniquity that is proven.

12 S on un fuego que consume hasta el sepulcro, y que acabaría con todas mis posesiones.

For it is a fire that consumes unto hell and would root out all my increase.

13 » Si no hubiera atendido a mi siervo y a mi sierva cuando me reclamaban que les hiciera justicia,

If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me;

14 ¿ con qué cara podría presentarme ante Dios, y responderle cuando me preguntara por ellos?

what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him?

15 ¡ El mismo Dios nos dio vida en el vientre! ¡A ellos y a mí nos dio forma en la matriz!

Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb?

16 » ¿Acaso impedí la felicidad del pobre, o dejé que las viudas desfallecieran de hambre?

¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17 ¿ Acaso me aparté para comer a solas, para no compartir mi pan con los huérfanos?

or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof;

18 ¡ Más bien, para los huérfanos fui un padre, y protegí a las viudas como a mi propia madre!

(for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb)

19 » ¿Acaso vi a alguien totalmente desnudo, y dejé al pobre sin un abrigo con qué cubrirse?

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing or any needy without a covering;

20 ¡ Más bien, me bendijo de todo corazón cuando entró en calor con mis vestidos de lana!

if his loins have not blessed me and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 » Jamás alcé mi mano contra el huérfano, cuando estuvo en mi mano impartir justicia.

if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate;

22 ¡ Que se me zafen los brazos sin miento! ¡Que se me rompan los huesos del brazo!

then let my back fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its joint.

23 ¡ Siempre he sido temeroso de Dios! ¡Ante su gran poder, nada puedo hacer!

For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power.

24 » Jamás puse mi esperanza en las riquezas, ni deposité en el oro toda mi confianza.

¶ If I have made gold my hope or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25 J amás me alegré de que mis posesiones aumentaran por el buen trabajo de mis manos.

if I rejoiced because my wealth was being multiplied, and because my hand had gotten much;

26 J amás disfruté del sol radiante, ni de las bellas noches de luna,

if I beheld the sun when it shone or the moon walking in beauty;

27 c on la idea de adorarlos en secreto y de enviarles un beso con la mano.

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth kissed my hand;

28 ¡ Eso hubiera sido un gran pecado, pues habría pecado contra el Dios Altísimo!

this would also be a proven iniquity; for I should have denied the God that is sovereign.

29 J amás me alegré al ver caer a mi enemigo, ni me regocijé cuando le sobrevino el mal.

If I rejoiced at the destruction of the one that hated me or lifted up myself when evil found him;

30 J amás le pedi a Dios maldecir a alguno; para no pecar, prefería quedarme callado.

for I have never even suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse upon his soul;

31 J amás permití que mis siervos abusaran de alguno de mis huéspedes.

when the servants of my tent said, Oh that we had of his flesh! We would never be satisfied.

32 J amás un extranjero que llamó a mi puerta pasó la noche fuera de mi casa.

The stranger did not lodge in the street, but I opened my doors to the traveller.

33 » Si acaso como humano encubrí mis faltas, si guardé el secreto de mi maldad,

¶ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom;

34 f ue por temor al desprecio de los nobles y a lo que el pueblo pensara de mí; pero guardé silencio y no salí de mi casa.

if I feared a great multitude or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and did not go out of the door?

35 » ¡Cómo quisiera que alguien me escuchara! Aunque mi enemigo me someta a juicio, confío en que el Todopoderoso hablará por mí.

Oh that someone would hear me! Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges.

36 C on mucho gusto aceptaré su juicio; con mucho gusto lo portaré como corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder and bind it as a crown to me.

37 L e daré cuenta de todas mis acciones, y me presentaré ante él, orgulloso como un príncipe.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince I would go near unto him.

38 » Si mis tierras hablan contra mí, y lloran de dolor por lo que les hice;

If my land cries against me and all its furrows likewise complain;

39 s i saqué provecho de ellas, sin retribución, o me aproveché de la bondad de sus dueños,

if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners;

40 ¡ que en lugar de trigo me rindan abrojos! ¡Que me den espinos en lugar de cebada!» Aquí terminan los discursos de Job.

let thistles grow up unto me instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
