¶ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

2 A nás y Caifás eran sumos sacerdotes. En esos días Dios le habló a Juan hijo de Zacarías en el desierto.

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came upon John the son of Zachariah in the wilderness.

3 J uan fue entonces por toda la región cercana al Jordán, y predicaba el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de pecados,

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

4 t al y como está escrito en el libro del profeta Isaías: «Una voz clama en el desierto: Preparen el camino del Señor y enderecen sus sendas.

as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.

5 T odo valle será rellenado, y todo monte y colina será nivelado. Los caminos torcidos serán enderezados, las sendas dispares serán allanadas,

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

6 y todos verán la salvación de Dios.»

and all flesh shall see the saving health of God.

7 A las multitudes que acudían para ser bautizadas, Juan les decía: «¡Generación de víboras! ¿Quién les enseñó a huir de la ira venidera?

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 P roduzcan frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comiencen a decirse: “Tenemos a Abrahán por padre”, porque yo les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios puede levantar hijos a Abrahán.

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 E l hacha ya está lista para derribar de raíz a los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y echado en el fuego.»

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

10 L a gente le preguntaba: «Entonces, ¿qué debemos hacer?»

And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

11 Y Juan les respondía: «El que tenga dos túnicas, comparta una con el que no tiene ninguna, y el que tenga comida, haga lo mismo.»

He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

12 T ambién unos cobradores de impuestos llegaron para ser bautizados, y le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros?»

Then the publicans also came to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 É l les dijo: «No cobren más de lo que deban cobrar.»

And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 U nos soldados también le preguntaron: «Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer?» Y Juan les respondió: «No extorsionen ni calumnien a nadie, y confórmense con su salario.»

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Oppress no one, neither accuse anyone falsely; and be content with your wages.

15 C omo el pueblo estaba expectante y todos se preguntaban si acaso Juan sería el Cristo,

¶ And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not,

16 J uan les dijo a todos: «A decir verdad, yo los bautizo en agua, pero después de mí viene uno que es más poderoso que yo, y de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de su calzado. Él los bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego.

John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you in water, but one mightier than I comes, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire;

17 Y a tiene el bieldo en la mano, de modo que limpiará su era; recogerá su trigo en el granero, y quemará la paja en un fuego que nunca se apagará.»

whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and will gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 C on exhortaciones como éstas, y con muchas otras, anunciaba al pueblo estas buenas noticias.

And exhorting many other things he announced the gospel unto the people.

19 A demás, Juan reprendió al tetrarca Herodes por causa de Herodías, que era mujer de su hermano Felipe. Pero a todas las maldades que Herodes había cometido,

Then Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife and for all the evils which Herod had done,

20 a ñadió esta otra: encerró a Juan en la cárcel. El bautismo de Jesús

added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

21 U n día en que todo el pueblo estaba siendo bautizado, también fue bautizado Jesús. Y mientras Jesús oraba, el cielo se abrió

¶ Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that, Jesus also being baptized and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 y el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre él en forma de paloma. Entonces vino una voz del cielo, que decía: «Tú eres mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco.» Genealogía de Jesús

and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee is my delight.

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli,
