1 A sí también ustedes, las esposas, respeten a sus esposos, a fin de que los que no creen a la palabra, puedan ser ganados más por la conducta de ustedes que por sus palabras,

¶ Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that also those who do not obey the Word, may be won without a word by the conversation of their wives,

2 c uando ellos vean su conducta casta y respetuosa.

considering your chaste conversation which is in fear.

3 Q ue la belleza de ustedes no dependa de lo externo, es decir, de peinados ostentosos, adornos de oro o vestidos lujosos,

Let their adorning not be outward with ostentatious hairdos and wearing of gold nor in composition of apparel,

4 s ino de lo interno, del corazón, de la belleza incorruptible de un espíritu cariñoso y sereno, pues este tipo de belleza es muy valorada por Dios.

but let the interior adorning of the heart be without corruption, and of an agreeable spirit and peaceful, which is precious in the sight of God.

5 P orque así era la belleza de aquellas santas mujeres que en los tiempos antiguos esperaban en Dios y mostraban respeto por sus esposos.

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who waited upon God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands,

6 P or ejemplo, Sara obedecía a Abrahán y lo llamaba señor. Y ustedes son sus hijas, si hacen el bien y viven libres de temor.

as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, of whom ye are made daughters, doing well and not being afraid of any terror.

7 D e la misma manera, ustedes, los esposos, sean comprensivos con ellas en su vida matrimonial. Hónrenlas, pues como mujeres son más delicadas, y además, son coherederas con ustedes del don de la vida. Así las oraciones de ustedes no encontrarán ningún estorbo. Una buena conciencia

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them wisely, giving honour unto the woman, as unto a more fragile vessel and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers not be hindered.

8 E n fin, únanse todos en un mismo sentir; sean compasivos, misericordiosos y amigables; ámense fraternalmente

¶ And finally, be ye all of one consent, of one affection, loving each other fraternally, merciful, courteous,

9 y no devuelvan mal por mal, ni maldición por maldición. Al contrario, bendigan, pues ustedes fueron llamados para recibir bendición.

not rendering evil for evil or curse for curse, but to the contrary, blessing, knowing that ye are called, that ye should possess a blessing by inheritance.

10 P orque: «El que quiera amar la vida Y llegar a ver días buenos, debe refrenar su lengua del mal, Y sus labios no deben mentir.

For he that desires to love life and see the good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil and his lips that they speak no guile;

11 D ebe apartarse del mal y hacer el bien, buscar la paz, y seguirla.

let him separate himself from evil and do good; let him seek peace and follow it.

12 P orque los ojos del Señor están sobre los justos, y sus oídos están atentos a sus oraciones; pero el rostro del Señor está en contra de los que hacen el mal.»

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those that do evil.

13 ¿ Quién podrá hacerles daño, si ustedes siguen el bien?

And who is he that can harm you, if ye are followers of that which is good?

14 ¡ Dichosos ustedes, si sufren por causa de la justicia! Así que no les tengan miedo, ni se asusten.

But also if ye suffer anything for righteousness’ sake, blessed are ye; therefore, be not afraid of their terror neither be troubled,

15 A l contrario, honren en su corazón a Cristo, como Señor, y manténganse siempre listos para defenderse, con mansedumbre y respeto, ante aquellos que les pidan explicarles la esperanza que hay en ustedes.

but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to respond to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and reverence,

16 T engan una buena conciencia, para que sean avergonzados aquellos que murmuran y dicen que ustedes son malhechores, y los calumnian por su buena conducta en Cristo.

¶ having a good conscience, so in that which they murmur against you as of evildoers, those that blaspheme your good conversation in the Christ may be confused.

17 E s mejor que ustedes sufran por hacer el bien, si Dios así lo quiere, que por hacer el mal.

For it is better (if the will of God so desires) that ye suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

18 P orque también Cristo padeció una sola vez por los pecados, el justo por los injustos, para llevarnos a Dios. En el cuerpo, sufrió la muerte; pero en el espíritu fue vivificado;

¶ For the Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in spirit,

19 e n el espíritu también, fue y predicó a los espíritus encarcelados,

in which he also went and preached unto the imprisoned spirits,

20 a los que en otro tiempo desobedecieron, en los días de Noé, cuando Dios esperaba con paciencia mientras se preparaba el arca, en la que unas cuantas personas, ocho en total, fueron salvadas por medio del agua.

which in the time past were disobedient, when once the patience of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being made ready, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

21 T odo esto es símbolo del bautismo (el cual no consiste en lavar las impurezas del cuerpo sino en el compromiso ante Dios de tener una buena conciencia) que ahora nos salva por la resurrección de Jesucristo,

¶ Unto the figure of which the baptism that does now correspond saves us (not taking away the uncleanness of the flesh, but giving testimony of a good conscience before God) by the resurrection of Jesus, the Christ,

22 q uien subió al cielo y está a la derecha de Dios, y a quien están sujetos los ángeles, las autoridades y las potestades.

who is at the right hand of God, having ascended into heaven, unto whom the angels and the authorities and powers are subject.
