1 J etro, que era sacerdote de Madián y suegro de Moisés, se enteró de todo lo que Dios había hecho con Moisés y con su pueblo Israel, y que el Señor había sacado de Egipto a Israel.

¶ When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done with Moses and with Israel his people and how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt,

2 C omo Moisés había enviado a Séfora, su mujer, a la casa de Jetro, su suegro, éste la tomó

then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,

3 j unto con sus dos hijos. Uno de ellos se llamaba Gersón, porque Moisés dijo: «Soy un extraño en una tierra extraña»;

and her two sons, of which the name of the one was Gershon, for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land,

4 e l otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque dijo: «El Dios de mi padre me ayudó y me libró de la espada del faraón.»

and the name of the other was Eliezer, for the God of my father, said he, helped me and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh;

5 A compañado de los hijos y la mujer de Moisés, el suegro de Moisés se fue al monte de Dios, en el desierto, que era donde Moisés estaba acampando.

and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he was camped next to the mount of God;

6 A llí le dijo a Moisés: «Yo soy Jetro, tu suegro, y vengo a verte con tu mujer. Sus dos hijos vienen con ella.»

and he said unto Moses, I, thy father-in-law Jethro, am come unto thee and thy wife and her two sons with her.

7 E ntonces Moisés salió a recibir a su suegro, y se inclinó y lo besó, y luego de preguntarse el uno al otro cómo estaban, entraron en la tienda.

¶ And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and did obeisance and kissed him; and they asked each other of their peace; and they came into the tent.

8 A llí Moisés le contó a su suegro todo lo que el Señor había hecho por Israel y en contra del faraón y de los egipcios, así como todos los trabajos que habían pasado en el camino, y cómo el Señor los había librado.

And Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and all the travail that had come upon them in the way and how the LORD delivered them.

9 J etro se alegró de lo bien que el Señor había tratado a Israel, al librarlo de manos de los egipcios,

And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 y dijo: «Bendito sea el Señor, que los libró a ustedes de manos de los egipcios, y de manos del faraón. ¡El Señor libró al pueblo de manos de los egipcios!

And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 A hora sé que el Señor es más grande que todos los dioses, porque en este caso él los venció.»

Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods; for in the thing in which they dealt proudly he prevailed against them.

12 L uego Jetro, el suegro de Moisés, ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios, y Aarón llegó con todos los ancianos de Israel para comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de jueces

And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took burnt offerings and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

13 A l día siguiente, sucedió que Moisés se sentó a juzgar al pueblo, y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.

¶ And it came to pass another day that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood before Moses from the morning unto the evening.

14 A l ver el suegro de Moisés todo lo que éste hacía con el pueblo, dijo: «¿Qué es lo que estás haciendo con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, mientras todo el pueblo se queda delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?»

And when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this that thou doest to the people? Why sittest thou thyself alone and all the people stand before thee from morning unto evening?

15 M oisés le respondió a su suegro: «Es que el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

And Moses said unto his father-in-law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God.

16 C uando tienen problemas, vienen a mí; entonces yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y les doy a conocer las ordenanzas y leyes de Dios.»

When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I declare unto them the statutes of God and his laws.

17 P ero el suegro de Moisés le dijo: «Esto que haces no está bien,

Then Moses’ father-in-law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 p ues te cansarás tú, y también se cansará este pueblo. Este trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti, y no vas a poder hacerlo tú solo.

Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou and this people that is with thee; for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 P réstame atención, que voy a darte un consejo, y que Dios te acompañe. Preséntate ante Dios en lugar del pueblo, y somete a su juicio todos los problemas.

Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people before God that thou may submit the causes unto God.

20 E nséñales a ellos las ordenanzas y las leyes, e indícales cómo deben conducirse, y qué deben hacer.

And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws and shalt show them the way in which they must walk and the work that they must do.

21 A demás, escoge de entre el pueblo algunos hombres respetables y temerosos de Dios, confiables y nada ambiciosos, y ponlos al frente de grupos de mil, cien, cincuenta y diez personas.

Moreover thou shalt consider out of all the people men of virtue, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness, and place princes over them, of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

22 Q ue se ocupen ellos de juzgar al pueblo en todo momento, que dicten sentencia en cuestiones menores, y que a ti te remitan todo asunto de gravedad. Así aligerarás tu carga, pues ellos la llevarán contigo.

And let them judge the people at all seasons; and it shall be that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge, so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

23 S i haces esto, y Dios así te lo ordena, podrás resistir; además, todo el pueblo volverá tranquilo a su casa.»

If thou shalt do this thing and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 M oisés atendió a la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que le dijo,

So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said.

25 p ues de entre todo Israel escogió hombres respetables y los puso a cargo del pueblo como jefes de grupos de mil, cien, cincuenta y diez personas.

And Moses chose men of virtue out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, princes over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties, and over tens.

26 E llos juzgaban al pueblo en todo momento y dictaban sentencia en todo asunto menor, y remitían a Moisés las cuestiones difíciles de resolver.

And they judged the people at all seasons; the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 D espués Moisés despidió a su suegro, y éste volvió a su tierra.

And Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went to his own land.
