1 H ice pacto con mis ojos; ¿cómo, pues, había yo de mirar a una virgen?

¶ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a maid?

2 P orque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente de las alturas?

For what reward would God give me from above and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

3 ¿ Por ventura no hay quebrantamiento para el impío, e infortunio para los que obran iniquidad?

Is there no destruction for the wicked? And banishment for the workers of iniquity?

4 ¿ Por ventura no ve él mis caminos, y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Does he not see my ways and count all my steps?

5 S i anduve con mentira, y si mi pie se apresuró a engaño,

If I have walked with falsehood or if my foot has hastened to deceit,

6 p éseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, y conocerá mi integridad.

let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know my integrity.

7 S i mis pasos se apartaron del camino, y si mi corazón se fue tras mis ojos, y si alguna mancha se apegó a mis manos,

If my step has turned out of the way and my heart walked after my eyes and if any blot has cleaved to my hands,

8 s iembre yo, y otro coma, y mis renuevos sean arrancados.

then let me sow, and let another eat, and let my offspring be rooted out.

9 S i fue mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, y si estuve acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo,

¶ If my heart has been deceived regarding a woman, or if I have laid in wait at my neighbour’s door,

10 m uela para otro mi mujer, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.

11 P orque es maldad e iniquidad, comprobada.

For this is lewdness and iniquity that is proven.

12 P orque es fuego que devoraría hasta el Seol, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

For it is a fire that consumes unto hell and would root out all my increase.

13 S i hubiera tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, cuando ellos pleitearan conmigo,

If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me;

14 ¿ qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantare? Y cuando él visitara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him?

15 ¿ Por ventura el que en el vientre me hizo a mí, no lo hizo a él? ¿Y no nos dispuso un mismo autor en la matriz?

Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb?

16 S i estorbé el contento de los pobres, e hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

17 y si comí mi bocado solo, y no comió de él el huérfano;

or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof;

18 ( porque desde mi juventud creció conmigo el huérfano como con padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fui guía de la viuda);

(for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb)

19 s i he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, y al menesteroso sin cobertura;

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing or any needy without a covering;

20 s i no me bendijeron sus lomos, y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

if his loins have not blessed me and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 s i alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aunque viere que todos me ayudarían en la puerta;

if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate;

22 m i espalda se caiga de mi hombro, y mi brazo sea quebrado de mi canilla.

then let my back fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its joint.

23 P orque temí el castigo de Dios, contra cuya alteza yo no tendría poder.

For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power.

24 S i puse en el oro mi esperanza, y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

¶ If I have made gold my hope or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25 s i me alegré de que mi hacienda se multiplicare, y de que mi mano hallare mucho;

if I rejoiced because my wealth was being multiplied, and because my hand had gotten much;

26 s i he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, y a la luna cuando iba hermosa,

if I beheld the sun when it shone or the moon walking in beauty;

27 y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano,

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth kissed my hand;

28 e sto también fuera iniquidad comprobada; porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

this would also be a proven iniquity; for I should have denied the God that is sovereign.

29 S i me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal;

If I rejoiced at the destruction of the one that hated me or lifted up myself when evil found him;

30 q ue ni aun entregué al pecado mi paladar, pidiendo maldición para su alma;

for I have never even suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse upon his soul;

31 c uando mis domésticos decían: ¡Quién nos diera de su carne! Nunca nos hartaríamos.

when the servants of my tent said, Oh that we had of his flesh! We would never be satisfied.

32 E l extranjero no tenía fuera la noche; mis puertas abría al caminante.

The stranger did not lodge in the street, but I opened my doors to the traveller.

33 S i encubrí, como Adán mis prevaricaciones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad;

¶ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom;

34 s i temí a la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, y callé, y no salí de mi puerta,

if I feared a great multitude or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and did not go out of the door?

35 ¡ quién me diera quien me oyere! He aquí mi señal es que el Omnipotente testificará por mí, aunque mi adversario me hubiera escrito los cargos.

Oh that someone would hear me! Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges.

36 C iertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ataría en lugar de corona.

Surely I would take it upon my shoulder and bind it as a crown to me.

37 Y o le contaría el número de mis pasos, y como príncipe me llegaría a él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince I would go near unto him.

38 S i mi tierra clamara contra mí, y llorarán todos sus surcos;

If my land cries against me and all its furrows likewise complain;

39 s i comí su sustancia sin dinero, o afligí el alma de sus dueños;

if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners;

40 e n lugar de trigo me nazcan espinos, y abrojos en lugar de cebada. Se acaban las palabras de Job.

let thistles grow up unto me instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
