1 D espués de estas cosas aconteció que murió Nahas rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó en su lugar su hijo.

¶ Now it came to pass after this that Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon, died, and his son reigned in his stead.

2 Y dijo David: Haré misericordia con Hanán hijo de Nahas, porque también su padre hizo conmigo misericordia. Así David envió embajadores que lo consolaran de la muerte de su padre. Mas venidos los siervos de David en la tierra de los amonitas a Hanán, para consolarle,

And David said, I will show mercy unto Hanun, the son of Nahash, because his father showed mercy to me. And David sent ambassadors to comfort him concerning his father. So the slaves of David came into the land of the sons of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

3 l os príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanán: ¿A tu parecer honra David a tu padre, que te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No vienen antes sus siervos a ti para escudriñar, e inquirir, y reconocer la tierra?

But the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, Does it seem unto thee that David honours thy father, that he has sent comforters unto thee? Are not his slaves come unto thee to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?

4 E ntonces Hanán tomó los siervos de David, y los rapó, y les cortó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las partes vergonzosas, y los despachó.

Then Hanun took David’s slaves and shaved them, and cut off their garments in half, exposing their buttocks and sent them away.

5 S e fueron, pues, y fue dada la nueva a David de aquellos varones, y él envió a recibirles, porque estaban muy afrentados. Y les dijo el rey: Estaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba, y entonces volveréis.

Then they left, and it was told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards are grown and then return.

6 Y viendo los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Hanán y los hijos de Amón enviaron mil talentos de plata, para tomar a sueldo carros y gente de a caballo de la Siria de los ríos, de la Siria de Maaca, y de Soba.

¶ And when the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the sons of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen out of Syria of the rivers (Mesopotamia), and out of Syria of Maachah and out of Zobah.

7 Y tomaron a sueldo treinta y dos mil carros, y al rey de Maaca y a su pueblo, los cuales vinieron y asentaron su campamento delante de Medeba. Y se juntaron también los hijos de Amón de sus ciudades, y vinieron a la guerra.

So they hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, who came and pitched camp before Medeba. And the sons of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities and came to battle.

8 O yéndolo David, envió a Joab y a todo el ejército de los hombres valientes.

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men.

9 Y los hijos de Amón salieron, y ordenaron su escuadrón a la entrada de la ciudad; y los reyes que habían venido, estaban por sí en el campo.

And the sons of Ammon came out and put the battle in order before the gate of the city, and the kings that had come were by themselves in the field.

10 Y viendo Joab que la faz de la batalla estaba contra él delante y a las espaldas, escogió de todos los más escogidos que había en Israel, y ordenó su escuadrón contra los sirios.

Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel and put them in order against the Syrians.

11 P uso luego el resto de la gente en mano de Abisai su hermano, ordenándolos en escuadrón contra los amonitas.

And he put the rest of the people into the hand of Abishai, his brother, putting them in order against the sons of Ammon.

12 Y dijo: Si los sirios fueren más fuertes que yo, tú me salvarás; y si los amonitas fueren más fuertes que tú, yo te salvaré.

And he said, If the Syrians are too strong for me, then thou shalt save me; but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for thee, then I will save thee.

13 E sfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga el SEÑOR lo que bien le pareciere.

Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people and for the cities of our God; and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

14 S e acercó luego Joab y el pueblo que tenía consigo, para pelear contra los sirios; mas ellos huyeron delante de él.

So Joab and the people that were with him drew near before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

15 E ntonces los hijos de Amón, viendo que los Sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai su hermano, y entraron en la ciudad. Y Joab se volvió a Jerusalén.

And when the sons of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem.

16 Y viendo los sirios que habían caído delante de Israel, enviaron embajadores, y trajeron a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río, cuyo capitán era Sofac, general del ejército de Hadad-ezer.

And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they sent ambassadors and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river, whose captain was Shophach, the prince of the host of Hadarezer.

17 Y cuando el aviso fue dado a David, juntó a todo Israel, y pasando el Jordán vino a ellos, y ordenó contra ellos su ejército. Y cuando David hubo ordenado su tropa contra ellos, pelearon contra él los sirios.

And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel and passed over the Jordan and came upon them and ordered his host against them. And when David had put his troops in order against the Syrians, they fought with him.

18 M as el sirio huyó delante de Israel; y mató David de los sirios los de siete mil carros, y cuarenta mil hombres de a pie; asimismo mató a Sofac, general del ejército.

But the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians those of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen; likewise he killed Shophach, the captain of the host.

19 Y viendo los sirios de Hadad-ezer que habían caído delante de Israel, concertaron paz con David, y fueron sus siervos; y nunca más quiso el sirio ayudar a los hijos de Amón.

And when the slaves of Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with David and became his servants; neither would the Syrians help the sons of Ammon any more.
