1 P asados muchos días, vino la palabra del SEÑOR a Elías en el tercer año, diciendo: Ve, muéstrate a Acab, y yo daré lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra.

¶ And it came to pass after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

2 F ue, pues, Elías a mostrarse a Acab; y había gran hambre en Samaria.

And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And there was a severe famine in Samaria.

3 Y Acab llamó a Abdías su mayordomo. (El cual Abdías era en gran manera temeroso del SEÑOR;

And Ahab called Obadiah, who was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly,

4 p orque cuando Jezabel talaba los profetas del SEÑOR, Abdías tomó cien profetas, los cuales escondió de cincuenta en cincuenta por cuevas, y los sustentó con pan y agua.)

for when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah took one hundred prophets and hid them in groups of fifty in caves and sustained them with bread and water.)

5 Y dijo Acab a Abdías: Ve por la tierra a todas las fuentes de aguas, y a todos los arroyos; si a dicha hallaremos grama con que conservemos la vida a los caballos y a las mulas, para que no nos quedemos sin bestias.

And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land to all the fountains of water and to all the brooks; peradventure we may find herbage to save the horses and mules alive that we not lose all the beasts.

6 Y partieron entre sí la tierra para recorrerlo; Acab fue de por sí por un camino, y Abdías fue separadamente por otro.

So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it; Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 Y yendo Abdías por el camino, se encontró con Elías; y cuando lo reconoció, se postró sobre su rostro, y dijo: ¿No eres tú mi señor Elías?

And as Obadiah was in the way, Elijah met him; and when he recognized him, he fell on his face, and said, Art thou not my lord Elijah?

8 Y él respondió: Yo soy; ve, di a tu amo: He aquí Elías.

And he answered him, I am; go, tell thy lord, Behold Elijah.

9 P ero él dijo: ¿En qué he pecado, para que tú entregues tu siervo en mano de Acab para que me mate?

And he said, In what have I sinned that thou should deliver thy slave into the hand of Ahab, for him to slay me?

10 V ive el SEÑOR tu Dios, que no ha habido nación ni reino donde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarte; y respondiendo todos: No está aquí, él ha conjurado a reinos y naciones si te han hallado.

As the LORD thy God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek thee; and when they all said, He is not here; he has caused kingdoms and nations to swear an oath if they have found thee or not.

11 ¿ Y ahora tú dices: Ve, di a tu amo: He aquí Elías?

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold Elijah.

12 Y acontecerá que, luego que yo me haya separado de ti, el Espíritu del SEÑOR te llevará donde yo no sepa; y viniendo yo, y dando las nuevas a Acab, y no hallándote él, me matará; y tu siervo teme al SEÑOR desde su juventud.

And it shall come to pass as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee where I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me; but I, thy slave, fear the LORD from my youth.

13 ¿ No ha sido dicho a mi señor lo que hice, cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas del SEÑOR; que escondí de los profetas del SEÑOR cien varones de cincuenta en cincuenta en cuevas, y los mantuve a pan y agua?

Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid one hundred men of the LORD’s prophets in groups of fifty in caves and sustained them with bread and water?

14 ¿ Y ahora dices tú: Ve, di a tu amo: He aquí Elías; para que él me mate?

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold Elijah; and he shall slay me.

15 Y le dijo Elías: Vive el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, delante del cual estoy, que hoy me mostraré a él.

And Elijah said unto him, As the LORD of the hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him today.

16 E ntonces Abdías fue a encontrarse con Acab, y le dio el aviso; y Acab vino a recibir a Elías.

Then Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab came to meet Elijah.

17 Y cuando Acab vio a Elías, le dijo Acab: ¿Eres tú el que turbas a Israel?

¶ And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubles Israel?

18 Y él respondió: Yo no he turbado a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, dejando los mandamientos del SEÑOR, y siguiendo a los baales.

And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

19 E nvía pues ahora y júntame a todo Israel en el monte del Carmelo, y los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal, y los cuatrocientos profetas de los bosques, que comen de la mesa de Jezabel.

Now therefore send and gather to me all Israel unto Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the groves, who eat at Jezebel’s table.

20 E ntonces Acab envió a todos los hijos de Israel, y juntó los profetas en el monte del Carmelo.

Then Ahab sent unto all the sons of Israel and gathered the prophets together unto Mount Carmel.

21 Y acercándose Elías a todo el pueblo, dijo: ¿Hasta cuándo cojearéis vosotros entre dos pensamientos? Si el SEÑOR es Dios, seguidle; y si Baal, id en pos de él. Y el pueblo no respondió palabra.

¶ And Elijah came near unto all the people and said, How long shall ye halt between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people did not answer him a word.

22 Y Elías tornó a decir al pueblo: Sólo yo he quedado profeta del SEÑOR; mas de los profetas de Baal hay cuatrocientos cincuenta varones.

Then Elijah spoke again unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23 D énsenos, pues, dos bueyes, y escójanse ellos uno, y córtenlo en pedazos, y pónganlo sobre leña, mas no pongan fuego debajo; y yo aparejaré el otro buey, y lo pondré sobre leña, y ningún fuego pondré debajo.

Give us, therefore, two bullocks, and let them choose one bullock for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on wood and put no fire under it; and I will dress the other bullock and lay it on wood and put no fire under it.

24 I nvocad luego vosotros en el nombre de vuestros dioses, y yo invocaré en el nombre del SEÑOR; y será que el Dios que respondiere por fuego, sea el Dios. Y todo el pueblo respondió, diciendo: Bien dicho.

And invoke ye in the name of your gods, and I will invoke in the name of the LORD; and it shall be that the God that answers by fire is God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 E ntonces Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: Escogeos un buey, y preparadlo vosotros primero, pues que vosotros sois los más; e invocad en el nombre de vuestros dioses, mas no pongáis fuego debajo.

So Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves and dress it first, for ye are many, and invoke in the name of your gods, but put no fire under it.

26 Y ellos tomaron el buey que les fue dado, y lo aparejaron, e invocaron en el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: ¡Baal, respóndenos! Mas no había voz, ni quien respondiera; entre tanto, ellos andaban saltando cerca del altar que habían hecho.

And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it and invoked in the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, answer us. But there was no voice nor anyone that answered. And they jumped up and down near the altar which they had made.

27 Y aconteció al mediodía, que Elías se burlaba de ellos, diciendo: Gritad en alta voz, que dios es; por ventura está conversando, o tuvo que ir a la letrina, o va de camino; o duerme, y despertará.

And it came to pass at noon that Elijah mocked them and said, Cry aloud, for he is a god; peradventure he is talking or he had to go to the latrine, or he is on a journey, or he sleeps and will awake.

28 Y ellos clamaban a grandes voces, y se sajaban con cuchillos y con lancetas conforme a su costumbre, hasta que la sangre se derramaba sobre ellos.

And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets until the blood gushed out upon them.

29 Y cuando pasó el mediodía, y ellos aun profetizaron hasta el tiempo del ofrecimiento del sacrificio de la tarde, y no había voz, ni quien respondiera ni escuchara;

And when midday was past, even so they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, and there was neither voice nor anyone that answered nor anyone that heard.

30 e ntonces Elías dijo a todo el pueblo: Acercaos a mí. Y todo el pueblo se acercó a él; y él reparó el altar del SEÑOR que estaba arruinado.

Then Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

31 Y tomando Elías doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, al cual había sido dada palabra del SEÑOR, diciendo: Israel será tu nombre;

And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name;

32 e dificó con las piedras un altar en el nombre del SEÑOR; después hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en que cupieran dos medidas de simiente.

and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD; then he made a trench round about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

33 O rdenó luego la leña, y cortó el buey en pedazos, y lo puso sobre la leña.

And he put the wood in order and cut the bullock in pieces and laid it on the wood and said, Fill four pitchers with water and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood.

34 Y dijo: Llenad cuatro cántaros de agua, y derramadla sobre el holocausto, y sobre la leña. Y dijo: Hacedlo otra vez; y otra vez lo hicieron. Y dijo: Hacedlo la tercera vez; y lo hicieron la tercera vez.

And he said, Do it the second time, and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time, and they did it the third time.

35 D e tal manera que las aguas corrían alrededor del altar; y también había llenado de agua la zanja.

So that the water ran round about the altar, and he had filled the trench also with water.

36 Y cuando llegó la hora de ofrecerse el holocausto de la tarde, se acercó el profeta Elías, y dijo: SEÑOR Dios de Abraham, de Isaac, y de Israel, sea hoy manifiesto que tú eres Dios en Israel, y que yo soy tu siervo, y que por mandato tuyo he hecho todas estas cosas.

And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, LORD God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel and that I am thy slave and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 R espóndeme, SEÑOR, respóndeme; para que conozca este pueblo que tú, oh SEÑOR, eres el Dios, y que tú convertirás de nuevo el corazón de ellos a ti.

Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God and that thou shalt convert their heart back again to thee.

38 E ntonces cayó fuego del SEÑOR, el cual consumió el holocausto, la leña, las piedras, el polvo, y aun lamió las aguas que estaban en la zanja.

Then fire of the LORD fell, which consumed the burnt sacrifice and the wood and the stones and the dust and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 Y viéndolo, todo el pueblo, cayeron sobre sus rostros, y dijeron: ¡El SEÑOR es el Dios! ¡El SEÑOR es el Dios!

And seeing it, all the people fell on their faces, and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

40 Y les dijo Elías: Prended a los profetas de Baal, que no escape ninguno. Y ellos los prendieron; y los llevó Elías al arroyo de Cisón, y allí los mató.

And Elijah said unto them, Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they seized them; and Elijah took them down to the brook Kishon and slew them there.

41 ¶ Entonces Elías dijo a Acab: Sube, come y bebe; porque una gran lluvia suena.

¶ Then Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

42 Y Acab subió a comer y a beber. Y Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo; y postrándose en tierra, puso su rostro entre las rodillas.

So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, and he cast himself down upon the earth and put his face between his knees

43 Y dijo a su criado: Sube ahora, y mira hacia el mar. Y él subió, y miró, y dijo: No hay nada. Y él le volvió a decir: Vuelve siete veces.

and said to his slave, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up and looked and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

44 Y a la séptima vez dijo: He aquí una pequeña nube como la palma de la mano de un hombre, que sube del mar. Y él dijo: Ve, y di a Acab: Unce tu carro y desciende, para que la lluvia no te ataje.

And the seventh time he said, Behold, a little cloud like the palm of a man’s hand arises out of the sea. And he said, Go and say to Ahab, Prepare thy chariot and descend that the rain not stop thee.

45 Y aconteció, estando en esto, que los cielos se oscurecieron con nubes y viento; y hubo una gran lluvia. Y subiendo Acab, vino a Jezreel.

And it came to pass in the meanwhile that the heavens became black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.

46 Y la mano del SEÑOR era sobre Elías, el cual ciñó sus lomos, y vino corriendo delante de Acab hasta llegar a Jezreel.

And the hand of the LORD was upon Elijah, who girded up his loins and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
