1 ¶ Hermanos míos, no os hagáis muchos maestros, sabiendo que recibiremos mayor condenación.

¶ My brethren, make not unto yourselves many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

2 P orque todos ofendemos en muchas cosas. Si alguno no ofende en palabra, éste es varón perfecto, que también puede con freno gobernar todo el cuerpo.

For we all offend in many things. If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to govern the whole body with restraint.

3 H e aquí, nosotros ponemos freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, y gobernamos todo su cuerpo.

Behold, we put bits (or restraint) in the horses’ mouths to persuade them, and we govern their whole body.

4 M irad también las naves, siendo tan grandes, y siendo llevadas de impetuosos vientos, son gobernadas con un muy pequeño timón por dondequiera que quisiere la gana del que gobierna.

Behold also the ships, which though they are so great are driven of fierce winds, yet they are governed with a very small rudder, wherever the governor desires.

5 A sí también, la lengua es un miembro pequeñito, y se gloría de grandes cosas. He aquí, un pequeño fuego ¡cuán grande bosque enciende!

In the same manner, the tongue is a very small member and boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles!

6 Y la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de maldad. Así es la lengua entre nuestros miembros que contamina todo el cuerpo, e inflama el curso de nuestro naturaleza, y es inflamada del infierno.

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7 P orque toda naturaleza de bestias fieras, y de aves, y de serpientes, y de seres del mar, se doma, y es domada por el ser humano;

For every nature of beasts and of birds and of serpents and of beings in the sea may be tamed and is tamed by mankind,

8 p ero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua, que es un mal que no puede ser refrenado, y está llena de veneno mortal.

but no man can tame the tongue, which is an evil that cannot be restrained and is full of deadly poison.

9 C on ella bendecimos al Dios, y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, los cuales son hechos a la semejanza de Dios.

With it we bless God, even the Father; and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

10 D e una misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, no conviene que estas cosas sean así hechas.

Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

11 ¿ Echa alguna fuente por una misma abertura agua dulce y amarga?

Does a fountain send forth at the same place both sweet and bitter water?

12 H ermanos míos, ¿puede la higuera producir aceitunas, o la vid higos? Así ninguna fuente puede dar agua salada y dulce.

Can the fig tree, my brethren, produce olive berries? or the vine, figs? In the same manner no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.

13 ¶ ¿Quién es sabio y avisado entre vosotros? Muestre por la buena conversación sus obras en mansedumbre de sabiduría.

¶ Who is wise and ready among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom.

14 P ero si tenéis envidia amarga, y contención en vuestros corazones, no os gloriéis, ni seáis mentirosos contra la verdad.

But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth.

15 P orque esta sabiduría no es la que desciende de lo alto, sino que es terrenal, animal, diabólica.

This wisdom is not that which descends from above, but is earthly, natural, diabolical.

16 P orque donde hay envidia y contención, allí hay perturbación, y toda obra perversa.

For where there is envy and contention, there is confusion and every perverse work.

17 M as la sabiduría que es de lo alto, primeramente es pura, después pacífica, modesta, benigna, llena de misericordia y de buenos frutos, no juzgadora, no fingida.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned.

18 Y el fruto de justicia se siembra en paz para aquellos que hacen paz.

And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace unto those that make peace.
