1 H ermanos míos, no os hagáis maestros muchos de vosotros, sabiendo que recibiremos un juicio más severo.

¶ My brethren, make not unto yourselves many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

2 P orque todos ofendemos en muchas cosas. Si alguno no ofende en palabra, éste es varón perfecto, capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo.

For we all offend in many things. If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to govern the whole body with restraint.

3 H e aquí que ponemos freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, y dirigimos así todo su cuerpo.

Behold, we put bits (or restraint) in the horses’ mouths to persuade them, and we govern their whole body.

4 M irad también las naves; aunque son tan grandes, e impulsadas por fuertes vientos, son dirigidas con un timón muy pequeño por donde quiere el que las gobierna.

Behold also the ships, which though they are so great are driven of fierce winds, yet they are governed with a very small rudder, wherever the governor desires.

5 A sí también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, pero se jacta de grandes cosas. ¡Mirad qué gran bosque se incendia con un pequeño fuego!

In the same manner, the tongue is a very small member and boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles!

6 Y la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de iniquidad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, y contamina todo el cuerpo, e inflama el curso de la existencia, siendo ella misma inflamada por el infierno.

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7 P orque toda naturaleza de bestias, de aves, de serpientes, y de seres del mar, se doma y ha sido domada por la naturaleza humana;

For every nature of beasts and of birds and of serpents and of beings in the sea may be tamed and is tamed by mankind,

8 p ero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua, que es un mal que no puede ser refrenado, llena de veneno mortífero.

but no man can tame the tongue, which is an evil that cannot be restrained and is full of deadly poison.

9 C on ella bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que están hechos a semejanza de Dios.

With it we bless God, even the Father; and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

10 D e una misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así.

Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

11 ¿ Acaso alguna fuente echa por una misma abertura agua dulce y amarga?

Does a fountain send forth at the same place both sweet and bitter water?

12 H ermanos míos, ¿puede acaso la higuera producir aceitunas, o la vid higos? Así también ninguna fuente puede dar agua salada y dulce. Dos clases de sabiduría

Can the fig tree, my brethren, produce olive berries? or the vine, figs? In the same manner no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.

13 ¿ Quién es sabio y entendido entre vosotros? Muestre por la buena conducta sus obras en sabia mansedumbre.

¶ Who is wise and ready among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom.

14 P ero si tenéis celos amargos y rivalidad en vuestro corazón, no os jactéis, ni mintáis contra la verdad;

But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth.

15 p orque esta sabiduría no es la que desciende de lo alto, sino terrenal, natural, diabólica.

This wisdom is not that which descends from above, but is earthly, natural, diabolical.

16 P orque donde hay celos y rivalidad, allí hay perturbación y toda obra perversa.

For where there is envy and contention, there is confusion and every perverse work.

17 P ero la sabiduría que es de lo alto es primeramente pura, después pacífica, condescendiente, benigna, llena de misericordia y de buenos frutos, sin incertidumbre ni hipocresía.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned.

18 Y el fruto de justicia se siembra en paz para aquellos que hacen la paz.

And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace unto those that make peace.
