1 R espondió Elifaz temanita, y dijo:

¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,

2 ¿ Proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, Y llenará su vientre de viento solano?

Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?

3 ¿ Disputará con palabras sin sentido, Y con razones inútiles?

Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?

4 T ú incluso disipas el temor, Y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.

Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.

5 P orque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, Pues has escogido el lenguaje de los astutos.

For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

6 T u boca te condena, y no yo; Y tus labios testifican contra ti.

Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

7 ¿ Naciste tú primero que Adán? ¿O fuiste formado antes que los collados?

Wast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?

8 ¿ Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, Y acaparas tú la sabiduría?

Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?

9 ¿ Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿Qué entiendes tú que a nosotros se nos escape?

What dost thou know that we do not? What dost thou understand, which is not in us?

10 C abezas canas y hombres muy ancianos hay entre nosotros, Mucho más avanzados en días que tu padre.

Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

11 ¿ En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios, Y las palabras que con dulzura se te dicen?

Are the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?

12 ¿ Por qué te arrebata tu corazón, Y por qué centellean tus ojos,

Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,

13 P ara que contra Dios vuelvas tu enojo, Y saques tales palabras de tu boca?

that thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?

14 ¿ Qué cosa es el hombre para que se crea limpio, Y para que se vea inocente el nacido de mujer?

What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

15 H e aquí, en sus santos no confía, Y ni aun los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos;

Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.

16 ¿ Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, Que se bebe la iniquidad como agua?

How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

17 E scúchame; yo te declararé, Y te contaré lo que he visto;

¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen,

18 L o que los sabios nos contaron De sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;

that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it,

19 A ellos solos fue dada la tierra, Y no pasó ningún extranjero por en medio de ellos.

unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20 T odos sus días, el impío es atormentado de dolor, Y el número de sus años está ya almacenado para el violento.

The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.

21 E struendos espantosos resuenan en sus oídos; En medio de su prosperidad, el asolador vendrá sobre él.

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 É l no cree que volverá de las tinieblas, Y está indefenso para la espada.

He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.

23 V aga alrededor tras el pan, diciendo: ¿En dónde está? Sabe que le está preparado día de tinieblas.

He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.

24 T ribulación y angustia le turbarán, E irrumpirán contra él como un rey dispuesto para la batalla,

Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

25 P or cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, Y se portó con soberbia contra el Todopoderoso.

Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,

26 E mbistió contra él con cuello erguido, Tras la barrera de su escudo macizo.

he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;

27 P orque la gordura cubrió su rostro, E hizo pliegues de grasa sobre sus ijares;

for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;

28 Y ahora habita en ciudades asoladas, En casas inhabitadas, Que amenazan ruina.

and he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.

29 N o prosperará, ni durarán sus riquezas, Ni se llevará a la tumba sus posesiones.

He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.

30 N o escapará de las tinieblas; El ardor del bochorno secará sus ramas, Y el viento barrerá sus flores.

He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.

31 N o confíe el iluso en la vanidad, Porque ella será su recompensa.

He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.

32 É l será cortado antes de tiempo, Y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.

He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

33 P erderá su agraz como la vid, Y derramará su flor como el olivo.

He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

34 P orque la congregación de los impíos será asolada, Y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno.

For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35 C oncibieron maldad, dieron a luz iniquidad, Y en sus entrañas madura el engaño.

They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.
